omg, about rue being tall: FINALLYYYYY. i'm huge woman 1,77 and I literally roll my eyes every time I read about "i'm such a tiny little woman" REPRESENTATION !!!!!
It's not just about being short or tall, most main characters in romance books are extremely feminine (but without trying at all), short and petite, there's usually something about how the male character can wrap his hands about their waist or pick them up with no effort at all, etc, etc
ali hazelwood reminds me of a shallow written isekai manhwa. i am blinded by the pretty art and the seemingly good looking characters only to drop it halfway because i cant stand it anymore
I'm not familiar with this author, but my best guess is that this is something she did at the request of her publishers. A lot of female authors have said that they've been being pressured to write sm*tty "alpha/sigma male" type romances because that's literally the only thing most of booktok reads. It's been a sad shift to see 😢
this book was just OK to me tbh but then he defends someone he's known for WEEKS over his friends hes known for decades and i hated it immediately lmao
i gotta say tbh, i do have immense respect for the forward hazelwood wrote. like even if the book itself didn’t quite work, i really appreciate that she’s the type of author to write a small explanation/warning for both new and longtime readers.
As a grad student, i couldnt get past the first chapter when i realized that a professor/PI was getting together with his grad student. I never looked back on any of her books ever since 😢
i read this book! they were about 6 yrs apart which is a pretty big gap for me personally (i js like characters closer in age) but she was like 27-ish I think? so it wasnt like some crazy weird gap that’d make you uncomfy lolol
I totally agree with you, for the first time I didn't like the male lead of Ali Hazelwood's universe. I was much more invested in Eli's bestfriend Hark's storyline. He seemed more Ali's type of male lead rather than Eli. I find more interesting the Hark, Minami and Sul's love triangle than Rue and Eli's. It just didn't hit the mark. Even in the smut scenes I didn't find that much of chemistry. It felt like forced. But on the other hand I loved how Ali explored Platonic relationship between Minami and Eli. It executed very well. The last part of the book where Eli and Minami had the talk was the most favourite part of the book for me. I'm glad Ali this time opened storyline for the side characters as well. In her other books where the story revolved around the only mcs but this time she explored a bit and I love that.
@@mzaman1532 that’s a really great point. Thank you for mentioning that! The love triangle, their friendship, and the hark backstory was super interesting, I wish they delved more into it
Without loredumping on a stranger, I saw that book cover in my local book shop one day and sent it to my friends saying the local bookshop wants me to cancel my life subscription bc Rue looks like my ex. Anyways the fact that Rue could tower over my 5'1.5" ex? Priceless, will never leave my brain.
completely unrelated but i wish there was a fast food straight romance book similar to ali's love hypopthesis but with a pathetic submissive man instead, specially if he's all tough and bossy on the outside (and it would also be great if it wasnt all healthy and wholesome uwu and he got like manipulated and toyed with by the female lead but i think i might be exposing myself too much here). these books always have the men being giant bossy feral alpha males and stuff like that, i can't stand it and i just cringe a lot and sometimes laugh. i honestly suspect a lot of women think they like these just because they havent found out yet that they are more on the ”dominant” side, there's no way the vast majority of straight women like these in a man, i truly hope not 😭
Hard agree. I get so so so tired of "alpha" men in books. On a side note, if you read sci fi romance, there's this book (full disclaimer part of a larger series) by Victoria Aveline called Using Fejo, that isn't like, full pathetic submissive man, but it's same sort of vibe - like guy is pathetically eager for love, wants it, pursues it, and it leaves him open to manipulation. IMO it's the golden retriever boy and black cat girl done right.
Like who speaks this way!!! And so inconsistent with the plot… in the beginning he says he’s not a good guy for what his company does but his reasoning was so justified and he was confident in it once we get the reveal!
I felt like Rue was the one preventing him from telling her about her boss by cutting him off every time he tried to bring it up. I also wished Rue's trauma had come up more, like she told us she was anxious about eating in certain situations, but we never saw it. Also, I saw the "without lube" line as him saying, "you have preferences, so don't just push them aside for expediency's sake" I read this for book club or I probably would never have picked it up. It was not DNF bad but it didn't reinvigorate my love for contemporary romance or anything
you couldn’t pay me to finish an ali hazelwood book but i’m happy to hear she’s broken free of the tiny female lead curse! every time I pick up a book and see the drastic height difference trope I DNF it immediately because it’s almost gross to me. It feels degrading and infantilizing. In fact, more body diversity in romance would make all these books infinitely more interesting, it would really help these characters stand out from one another. Even if the romance genre isn’t taken seriously, if we don’t demand more from our authors we won’t get good art.
i love her books because the book is shitty romance and i love shitty romance and the guys are so pathetically in love and i think all romance novel hero’s need to be pathetic !
