BRILLIANT a shame there aren't any more subscribers because I cant find any video on TH-cam even remotely close to this one, great job.

These videos are fascinating.Patrick O'Brian mentions a "come up" telescope in the Aubrey - Maturin novels. While the Wiki page gives a reasonable explanation about how this telescope works, I was wondering it you had an example of this type of scope?
I'm looking forward to your bino series.

Watching these video series brings to mind a book by Leslie Peltier ,one of the most famous amateur astronomers here state side, who started off with draw tube telescope, called in the book " the strawberry spyglass" . He went on to join the AAVSO using this same telescope. It probably was a newer type than shown here as he noted in the book I had more than one eye piece.
The book by the way is called " Star light nights"
I reread it when ever I start thinking I need a bigger telescope, lol.

Should the patina be left intact when cleaning a vintage scope?

The answer lies in the eye of the beholder. One persons 'pleasing patina of usage' is another persons 'ugly signs of neglect'! Personally I'm not at all keen on mechanically buffed and polished brass as it destroys detail. But it's hard to make a case for always avoiding promoting the appearance of a vintage item. I've seen vintage telescopes utterly wrecked by ham fisted renovation and I tend to give most things 'renovated' a swerve unless it's rare or I'm very sure what's been done. I'd rather have an old scope with busted glass than find I've got someones concoction with modern optics glued in place and then, because they couldn't get an exact match, they cut an inch off the tube to get focus! Hi. It's a long shot, but I have inherited a hand-held telescope and I am unable to get it to focus (even after asking the internet). Maybe you can help?

I had the same issue. After playing with it for awhile, I discovered I did not have the telescope fully extended. You may want to try that first. Also if you look thru the telescope thru the end rather the eye piece, can you see anything? If not u may have internal issues or the eye piece cover is in the closed position and needs moved over.

Sometimes people clean and reassemble bits in the wrong order.
If the unsharpness is different either side of 'focus', you could try reversing the objective elements?
It is hard to describe 'spherical aberration', but one side of focus is high contrast but low resolution: the other has high resolution, but a 'halo' around highlights.
Sometimes there are bits missing, or the telescope is a modern facsimilie/replica 'for display purposes only' ...
