  • We will discuss the fascinating interplay between the host immune system and viruses in triggering demyelinating diseases of the brain.
Renaud Du Pasquier, M.D. is associate professor in Neurology at UNIL--CHUV. After medical studies and board certification in Internal Medicine and Neurology in Geneva, he performed a post-doc in neuroimmunology/neurovirology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston, from 1999 to 2004. Primarily devoted to the research in demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system, his laboratory tries to understand the respective contribution of the immune system, on one hand, and viruses, on the other hand, to the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. He also holds a clinical research program dealing with the neurocognitive disorders in HIV+ patients.
    About TEDx:
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I think MS flare ups are linked to dehydration. I'm afraid of the neurologist not taking me seriously as I didn't know what MS was a few years ago

Yes, me too. But I was diagnosed with MS aged 57. I was diagnosed with Epstein Barr (Glandular fever) aged 42. MS might not ALWAYS follow EBV, but EBV does ALWAYS precede MS.

I agree with the Epstein-Barr virus link. I contracted mono in 7th grade. I also developed symptoms I now know are associated with MS in that time frame, although I was not diagnosed until I was in my late 20's. The other nutritional / demographic you see correlated with MS is distance from the equator, implicating vitamin D3 deficiency. I sunburn very easily, and avoid sun exposure. No doubt I was D3 deficient growing up. I supplement with D3 now, but that is too late after you contract MS, but it can't hurt either. Of course none of this explains why some people have "benign" MS, RRMS, primary / secondary progressive MS. This is proving a tough nut to crack indeed.

A Brazilian doctor believes that MS and other autoimmune diseases are related to Vitamin D deficiency. He treats with very high doses of vitamin D and has trained some practitioners in the US. You may want to look at The Coimbra Protocol.

Also, the disease does have an hereditary component. My family has at least 6 members who are known to have Multiple Sclerosis. There appear to be hereditary factors as well as environmental factors.

Please watch Dr Cicero Coimbra on TH-cam. One of the main contributors to most autoimmune diseases including MS is Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D utilisation is impaired in MS patients and this impairment runs in families. This could be why Autoimmune disease runs in families. Please check your Vitamin D level and top your level up to safe levels with the help of your healthcare provider.

Very interesting and truly pioneering. Before my first relapse i actually noted i had a severe flu for around a month during December 2015, by February i had relapased. I now wonder if this is when it all started, however i feel i had symptoms maybe 7 years prior such as bladder incontinece.
There are many stories where people turn to herbs and antioxidants to fight their MS with great success. I wonder if this is the link behind the success of diet and its treatment of MS - fueling the microbiome and supercharging infection eradication. Thus curing ones self?
Ive definetly seen benefits, i still feel as though i carry a lingering infection however.

There is in my opinion a strong link between gut microbiome and MS because a leaky gut=leaky brain.
It seems like all neurological diseases involve the gut!
      Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Autism,...
We live in exciting times regarding neurology because of the research on the gut, there will be tremendous discoveries in the next 10 years

No idea if I contracted EBV from my first girlfriend, as I sure did hsve hrrpes before that, but it's interesting, how our very different health issues might be caused by the same virus interacting with almost opposite immune systems - her immunity proved too weak to fight cancer, while mine is hyper-aggressive and have caused MS.

Its really sofisticated desease, therfore for now ist no cure for it, but I think that defenitely there is a link between beeing infected with EBV, having low exposure to the sunlight in the teen years, and after that having some serious infection viral or bacterial like boreliosis or unknown viral infection and you have low count of cytotoxic leukocytes like CD8+ CD3+ and so on, and than you can develop some autoimune disease.

Ha!! I remember in about 1999, three years after I was diagnosed, asking either a neurologist or a family doc ,(I forget which), whether there might be some connection between the fact that I had Epstein-Barr virus which resulted in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome back in the mid 1980s, and my current dx of multiple sclerosis. "Oh no," he said quite confidently, shaking his head. But I persisted, telling him I felt in my *gut* there was a connection. "Well," he continued, "if there's any connection at all, at this point in time, it's totally anecdotal. There is absolutely nothing in the medical literature that confirms an actual connection." I remember feeling at that moment he was simply wrong, but I was helpless to convince him otherwise, because I had little else but a "knowing" based on my own health experiences.
Fastforward to this research unveiled on TedTalk and it appears my GUT was right, after all!!! Interestingly, it is indeed my gut, both intuitively and organically, that may be very much involved with the interplay between the Epstein-Barr virus and later onset of multiple sclerosis. Morals of this story? Doctors need to listen intently to what their patients are saying. Take the information and run with it, instead of dismissing it. And patients can virtually bank on what their own minds figure out about the causes of their conditions. If that doctor had taken me seriously in 1999, and pursued what I told him, would we be further along with a cure for MS? We'll never know.

TedX photographers and film crew are very irritating. You love invading the privacy of women whilst they are watching a speaker. You should be sued for this behavior. Let the audience focus on the speaker, not audience members. Privacy invaded.
