You did such a great job on that closet! My suggestion would be to add labels to your bins to make it easier to find what you're looking for and not have to remember or pull a bin down to see what's in it. It's amazing to think back on where you started - especially the basement and crawl space in your previous house! What a journey you've taken us on.

It also helps you stay within your set boundary, when the bin is labeled it’s a signal that it can’t be used as overflow of other things! Fantastic solution

Yes, indeed. You think you remember which bin is what, but that doesnt last, you either forget, and have to look or at least pause and think to remember- that takes time and mental energy, like information noise, that messes up clear thinking

I could tell you were shaking by your voice 😀. My own heart was beating rapidly as you finished up! What a MAJOR accomplishment - getting thru your school closet!!! Your closet was similar in nature to the collection of clipped, copied, and/or sorted recipes I have in TWO, packed full - 32" file drawers and TWO storage boxes to sort INTO those drawers and TWO storage box-lids holding still-to-sort-and-file recipe clippings...INTO those drawers...and...I don't cook.
Well I do...but I do quick crockpot, quick casseroles...and the occasional turkey, or roast dish. I'd love to eat all these thousands of dishes/desserts...but I really don't like to cook...go figure...I've done this for over 25 yrs...and haven't had luck getting rid of them...Before now. YOU HAVE INSPIRED ME ERICA...As I watched you, I went thru 4 full manilla folders and so far, only have kept 6 recipes... my recycle bin is getting full! 🥰

I also have HUNDREDS of paperbacks - some of which I recycle, but only after a I list and describe story line...I can read 1 a day and found I kept rebuying those I've read...AND I file stuff....I'm a now-retired Bank compliance officer, so "record retention" and detailed organization is in my "cricket-Clutterbug" DNA I guess...but yeah...you're correct...Recipe collection is my fantasy Julia Child as are my exersize books/clippings my former 25-yr old former runner/gym rat, self! 🤪 Thx for comment!

Well done! You got to way less than 80% of the storage space. Your whole closet is a designated “container” so if you aren’t ready to discard than keep it. I second the label the bins comment. As you took out bins you kept saying “what is this?” The investment in time to do so will repay greatly during use and may even prevent a future whole closet declutter. Kudos for the vulnerability of showing real life decluttering! You’ve done amazing work and I enjoy your channel. (And how wonderful you homeschool!)

Homeschooled 4 to completion, still homeschooling the baby at 16. 🥴 Totally get your struggle. I decluttered our homeschool stash after I started watching your videos. I have been here since you started. ❤ I knew I had a lot but was surprised at how much. At first I tried to resell due to feelings of guilt at how much money I had spent and "wasted". But, is it really a waste when it just didn't fit? How was I supposed to know it wasn't going to fit until I tried. Some things worked with 1 or 2 learners only. Some didn't work at all and, yes, I found some forgotten stuff. I successfully sold a lot but after awhile I lost the drive to sell and just packed it into boxes in my closet. Well, last spring our homeschool group was having a used curriculum sale and I drug the box out, went thru it and the rest I had kept. I donated it all. Felt so good to have an organized closet again and not so much clutter and knowing other people are able to utilize what I couldn't. I am so happy for you getting this closet done. You deserve a huge round of applause. I find myself standing in my closet admiring the space. Lol. We, as homeschoolers, know the difficulties in having different style learners and how easy it is to accumulate curriculum. We utilize living books for history and WOW! I had to put my foot down at purchasing our favorites because they all became favorites. Anyways, sorry this is so long. Loved the video content as well as length. You inspire me.

In the 1990s my daughter learned to read with an old Sally,Dick and Jane book at 4 yrs old. I taught my children to sound out words and letters. Sometimes there are sight words. They all learned early and excelled with this method. At their school, they were into sight word method.Lots of children in that school were poor readers, slow, under level. They soon went back to sounding out. They hired me later to tutor.(when my children were older). Also read to them for hours! You dont need alot of stuff to teach, getting to the point!😁

Oh my word, how did I miss this when it came out a month ago! I was so looking forward to the third - and it was absolutely worth it! You must be just smugly satisfied and happy every time you use the cupboard - and it's such a busy space - meeting the nearly daily needs of three busy children learning - so a regular inventory is probably a must. Some spaces just get used more - but those are also the spaces which need to be organised to help your thinking. I was thinking that when you were looking over the readers when putting items into the clear boxes - and you talking through your own thinking and decisions which I always love - and putting things together and explaining what they were for - and I realised that tightening the focus of what you have allows for a body to keep things tidier with more ease and also allows you to know what you have - you have it in one spot and you have only as much as you know you'll use - it's marvellous! Thank you as always for your inspirational videos.

I recommend for you to put temporary labels on your shelves like post it notes or on scrap paper. It’s exciting to shop for a house. I took my four kids with us but left them in the vehicle with lots of activities, snacks and treats. That was easier for me than finding a babysitter. Don’t focus so much on the house because you can always remodel or add to it. Focus on the neighborhood and closed to where to spend your most time. Don’t fall in love to quickly on one house. Your dream house will be there waiting for you. Wish you the best.

Erica, the closet looks great!!! A small suggestion....if you grouped what you can by grade...pre K, K , grade 1, etc. then as the youngest child finishes with that grade, you will know exactly what to declutter. Also, I know you are renting right now, but the house seems pretty perfect for you....enough space inside and out and with a pool.....just remember there is nothing wrong with renting....the advantages sometimes out weigh this need we have for "ownership".Consider this, with renting you get a great home that already ticks all the boxes for enough bedrooms and space inside and out, the family is already familiar with the neighborhood, and most maintenance is the responsibility of the owner...you won't have to replace the roof, furnace or pool. And you won't have to pack up and start all over again. :)

Have you thought about buying a small(ish) house on a larger plot and add a container or two as office/brewery/homeschool.
As the kids grow older they would/could appreciate the division between learning and the privacy of a (smaller) room.
You might get more flexible househunting looking for older, thus smaller, houses - getting something with character/history.
We got the idea from typical Swedish summer houses, which typically might have a guest cabin(more or less luxurious with a small shower bathroom) on the grounds. ( My husband used ours as an office during corona.)
And maybe even an additional cabin with just a sofa bed, a bunk bed and an oldfashioned TV screen connected to some gaming console.
Together with a garage, a green house, a pavilion and a garden shed you end up with what‘s looking like an oldfashioned little village.
You could even park your trailer, makes it a lot easier to pack and go spontaneaously. Even makes nice guest quarters.
By the way, I love your hair and your relaxed style.

Those bins worked so nicely! The closet is beautiful. I really like listening to you talk through your decluttering decisions. So smart!

Woot - fantastic to see this complete. It makes me feel like anything is possible as the projects I am working on really dragged me down at the end of the year. Thank You!

You did fantastic! Erica at her finest! My one suggestion is to take the scant Spanish bin and use it up on the top shelf in the corner where you have all those books that would be hard to reach , and switch shelves so they can be easily got into!

My husband and I have been looking for a house with acreage in Michigan for over a year and a half and we have run into the same problem of overpriced houses with nothing that we are looking for. We understand your frustration! Good luck on your hunt!

What a difference! I'm impressed that you talked about the shakiness as other feelings you had afterwards. Noone talks about that and I often accredit those feelings to possibly flaring up due to pushing myself. Next time I feel that way when decluttering I'm going to stop and think about what the feelings are. Thanks Erica! This series has been really helpful!

A great vid. on the whole process of decluttering and organising. I love that you kept in the part where you really were not sure about an item. Having just made one pass on my home, I know there are lots of bits where I went through the same thought process, and ended up keeping at the time. I am now on my second pass and have been able to get rid of many of those items, but at the time just keeping allowed me to stay with the momentum.
I know some people would say, 'If you need to think too hard, get rid,' but there is also something to be said for being kind to yourself sometimes.

Well done you completed it! 👏 I know people love label makers but I far prefer using masking tape and a sharpie for larger, easier to read labels. The benefit is they pull off again easily without leaving residue so you can update your labels constantly with no effort. Labels will help keep you honest with yourself when putting things away too as then no brain power is required to check what the right home is for things 😉

You mentioned packing heavy. I am actually flying to Las Vegas today (this is my birthday week, and it’s a “big fat ugly zero” birthday, and on ugly zero birthdays you get to go to Vegas). I am taking the bare minimum of “stuff,” and that is how I pack now. If I forget anything, it can be bought. Of course, it depends on where you’re going….

Watching you talk through decisions has helped me so much with my own decisions. I have literally been talking out loud to myself as I’m trying to declutter. I’ve been sorting through hand me downs the past couple of days and I’ve been working through, ‘but it’s cute, I have memories of my older son wearing it, it’s a perfectly good shirt’ but ending with: no child needs 23 shirts and it stresses me out to see that many things in the closet. Passing them along, and I can feel the stress lifting. Thank y ou for sharing your life!

Wow!!!! Great job!!! Very tidy!!! You should label the catagories... Even if it's just with masking tape underneath on the shelf that way when you get a look for something 6 months from now you know what the categories were.

House hunting has been difficult since 2020. We were able to sell our home very fast, but finding one without a bidding war was horrible. 5 offers on 5 differnt homes and finally an offer excepted. It's even more crazy now. :/ I wish you lots of good luck on your search!

Hooray! 😃 You smashed it! Needed this right now, I am going through my own storage (again) and your reasoning is so helpful for me! Fwiw; trust your instincts, don't worry about keeping the Social Studies units, you might give yourself 6 months or so to see if they are useful, after all. Then next time if it still hasn't been used it can go then, no harm done. 💖💖

Remember the housing bubble in 2008....that BURST! If you can wait a little while more, I'd wait. My soon to be daughter-in-law works for a mortgage company. She and my oldest son are also looking for a house. (they will be getting married this coming Oct 1!) But they are more ready to jump on a property after everything DEVALUES! You don't want to buy a house and then suddenly it's no longer worth what you paid for it!
