I visited the Black Hills as a teen while on a family reunion vacation and I’ll always remember how drastically the hills stuck out from the flat landscape of South Dakota. Likewise, when we were looking out while staying on the Hills, you could see for miles in all directions. Definitely have to visit there again soon!
The reason that South Texas has such a long life expectancy is that there are lots of retirement communities there. You can't have died young if you are already old.

That relief map was awesome, as a Wisconsinite, it was really neat to see the “Driftless Area” along the Mississippi, a region where glacial drift did not occur. Really cool area to explore given how flat or rolling hilly the rest of the state is.

I‘m from Luxembourg, so I‘m very glad you mentionned our country haha. Indeed, the majority of Luxembourgish migrants settled down in Iowa, Illinois or Wisconsin. The reason for that are the German an Belgium communities that were already there a bit earlier. Not only did the Luxembourger speak the same language (German and French), but they had also the same religion (catholic). All these elements made integration much more easier.
I travel all over the west. Northern Nevada is my playground. And I drive to Phoenix every year trying to take a different route each time. Until C0vid, my friend and I used to drive 150 or so miles to each lunch twice a month. We have been to Shasta Lake, Lake Tahoe, Virginia City, Yosemite, Bodega Bay, as well as others. We are getting old now and want to see as much as we can. I am 66 and he is 75. And I love New Mexico as well (I like buying green chili's in Hatch). Your channel helps me visit those places that I cant make it to and I like that. Keep up the great work.

Most Americans I know who don’t use their vacation days is because they make a lot less money during that period than if they were working and making OT or whatever. That’s the even harsher more depressing truth: They can’t afford to go on paid time off. :(
We get paid vacation where I work... 5 weeks a year.... some people never use it...or, as I like to say, some people have nothing better to do than to come into work..

Americans are obsessed with money and working and often have high expenses which negate the higher income they may have. As far as the US state/European heritage map goes, there's an explanation for Denmark and Utah. Mormon missionaries were particularly successful in Denmark (as opposed to other Scandinavian countries), resulting in a high percentage of converts and pioneer immigrants to Utah. And I'm descended from some of them!
Brit here. The monarchy is totally outdated, but I’m not in favour of abandoning it - rather a Netherlands-style move to massively defund it and make them live fairly normal lives, without millions of taxpayers pounds thrown at them

Proud to be of Polish heritage, and living in Illinois!! The *only* state where Polish is the second-most spoken language! There are some pockets in Pittsburgh and Milwaukee, but even in my town of Buffalo Grove (NW suburbs of Chicago) just going to the local grocery store is a polyglot! Polish, some Russian, a bit of Spanish, some Indian (Asian), Mandarin...it's guaranteed that I will never hear *just* English in any store.
That is similar to the way I grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, Can. In the older parts of town, particularly central and east end, you could hear almost every language spoken in the world.
I would be interested to see that Home affordability map if you added in property taxes. You have NJ, the State I live in, as 48% of people can afford a home, but the property taxes are so high here, I'll bet it's a lot fewer people who can actually afford a home in practice.
States with low life expectancy. I'd put it down to three main factors. 1) Percentage of residents who smoke. 2) Alcohol consumption. 3) Obesity. States where grass is still illegal put it down to conservatives controlling state legislative bodies with very conservative leaders. I know that's the case in Wisconsin. Affordability of brand new homes in the US. Personally I wouldn't want a new home as I consider the quality of construction inferior to many older homes.
In practice, 1st offense simple possession in SC is a $24 ticket. Officer discretion though, so own up to it when you get stopped to avoid the handcuffs.
I obviously can’t speak for every company in the US, but where I work they pay us out for our unused vacation days. I get 14 days so if I don’t use them they just pay me 2 weeks worth, meaning I get paid for 54 weeks on the year instead of 52 🤷🏼♂️ and unless I need to use them for a family holiday or something, I’d rather get that extra $1000 on the year. Like I said, no idea how other companies handle unused vacation days but this is what the standard should be for them.

Oh, it’s localized everywhere. Even in the US, it seems like every town and university has its own version. Wouldn’t be surprised if there weren’t 500+ versions in the States alone. Yet just about everyone sticks with the classic.
Regarding days off (6:25), I was surprised to see that China gets only 1 - 5 days. I lived there for 2 years and saw that virtually everyone gets about a month off at Chinese New Year and another week off a few months later. I'm no authority on this so maybe it is the words "mandatory" or "paid" that cause China to look so bad because in my experience, Chinese get good vacation days off.
On the Marijuana map, I was literally LOSING MY MIND cuz I couldn’t figure out why Delaware was grey!!! Being from Delaware, it’s always the first place I look on the map like this, but it’s understandable how someone would just forget to color it! So that makes sense!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Minimum paid vacations map is BS. You should depict a map showing on the average paid vacation days people actually recieve per country. I for example get 36 paid days annually. I would bet most people in the US get paid vacation days way more on average per person then practically every country. Most countries in Africa have mandatory housing but people on average dont have housing. Lots of countries "gaurantee" or make things "mandatory", dont mean people recieve them. So again the map is very misleading on what people actually receive.
10:50 Interesting observation, this time, however, I don't think there will be a massive 07/08, it will be worse, and it won't get better. The fed has printed trillions to buy up the market in 2020 and the current administration is not looking to pressure quantitative restriction. Basically what I'm saying is that they have printed a sh8t ton of money, more money per unit of time in recorded American history, the powers that be have no intention of recalling that money they have printed or defaulting on it, so, therefore, massive inflation across the board will happen. It won't be because of Russian hackers, or Trump's "terrible economics", it will be because of the money fraudulent system that has been our money system for the last 100 years.

A little bit of Mormon history: The church converted literally thousands from England and Denmark throughout the 19th century, and almost all of them from that time period immigrated to Utah gather with the rest of the "saints." That's why you see Utah so well represented from those European countries.

I’m Scottish ...The monarchy has strong ties to Scotland (the queen is half Scottish & they spend a lot of time here) & Scotland has always had a monarchy (the first King of Great Britain was Scottish). When/if we go independent, we’ll probably still have the monarchy. The monarchy isn’t really part of the independence debate at all. I’m not a royalist but i can’t see Scotland disowning the queen anytime soon. Maybe after she dies things will change in the whole of the UK

Kyle, I absolutely love this series (I love your videos in general, but especially anything to do with maps). Fascinating how Tagalog is the most common language spoken in California, but the highest Asian ethnicity is Chinese rather than Filipino. How would you account for that? My guess is that many many of the Chinese in California have been there for well over a hundred years, and though they identify as Chinese ethnically, they don't speak any of the Chinese languages. Or it could just be that there are three major Chinese languages and only one Filipino. Or a combination of those things. What do you think? I also particularly love the Friday Night in San Francisco album cover you have up in this video. One of my favorites as well. ♥️ And finally, congratulations on such an excellent channel!
Yeah maybe some of those of Chinese descent don't speak the languages. Also I think Filipino migrants might be a slightly newer demographic than the Chinese migrants. Hi from Oakland, CA!
Yeah I definitely think it's because of the fact that there isn't a whole lot of immigration from China anymore and most people of Chinese descent are 3rd generation or more. China is still poor but better off than 50 years ago and fewer people are leaving. When I worked for Monterey County Emergency Management we'd print off flood and earthquake info in English, Spanish, and Tagalog. What's kind of ironic is that English is widely spoken in the Philippines.
I really enjoyed several of your map series. Very informative and without an agenda of your own to keep the info unbiased. I just wanted to mention that the US government along with various charitable organizations settled refugees here in Fort Wayne, IN some years ago from what was formerly Burma, now Myanmar. We have around 10,000 here dating back to their civil war in the 90's, I believe, as well as more Burmese in Indy and other cities in Indiana. California also has a relatively large group. I thought I might get a small adjustment on your language/nationality data maps, and a pin for Fort Wayne.
One reason people don't take a vacation is that I use to work for a company that if you asked about it they said we will let you know when you can take it and before you know it the year is up.

There are some pockets in Pittsburgh and Milwaukee, but even in my town of Buffalo Grove (NW suburbs of Chicago) just going to the local grocery store is a polyglot! Polish, some Russian, a bit of Spanish, some Indian (Asian), Mandarin...it's guaranteed that I will never hear *just* English in any store.
That is similar to the way I grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, Can. In the older parts of town, particularly central and east end, you could hear almost every language spoken in the world.
I would be interested to see that Home affordability map if you added in property taxes. You have NJ, the State I live in, as 48% of people can afford a home, but the property taxes are so high here, I'll bet it's a lot fewer people who can actually afford a home in practice.

States with low life expectancy. I'd put it down to three main factors.
1) Percentage of residents who smoke.
2) Alcohol consumption.
3) Obesity.
States where grass is still illegal put it down to conservatives controlling state legislative bodies with very conservative leaders. I know that's the case in Wisconsin.
Affordability of brand new homes in the US. Personally I wouldn't want a new home as I consider the quality of construction inferior to many older homes.
In practice, 1st offense simple possession in SC is a $24 ticket. Officer discretion though, so own up to it when you get stopped to avoid the handcuffs.

I obviously can’t speak for every company in the US, but where I work they pay us out for our unused vacation days. I get 14 days so if I don’t use them they just pay me 2 weeks worth, meaning I get paid for 54 weeks on the year instead of 52 🤷🏼♂️ and unless I need to use them for a family holiday or something, I’d rather get that extra $1000 on the year. Like I said, no idea how other companies handle unused vacation days but this is what the standard should be for them.

Oh, it’s localized everywhere. Even in the US, it seems like every town and university has its own version. Wouldn’t be surprised if there weren’t 500+ versions in the States alone.

Regarding days off (6:25), I was surprised to see that China gets only 1 - 5 days. I lived there for 2 years and saw that virtually everyone gets about a month off at Chinese New Year and another week off a few months later. I'm no authority on this so maybe it is the words "mandatory" or "paid" that cause China to look so bad because in my experience, Chinese get good vacation days off.
On the Marijuana map, I was literally LOSING MY MIND cuz I couldn’t figure out why Delaware was grey!!! Being from Delaware, it’s always the first place I look on the map like this, but it’s understandable how someone would just forget to color it! So that makes sense!!! 🤣🤣🤣

Minimum paid vacations map is BS. You should depict a map showing on the average paid vacation days people actually recieve per country. I for example get 36 paid days annually. I would bet most people in the US get paid vacation days way more on average per person then practically every country. Most countries in Africa have mandatory housing but people on average dont have housing. Lots of countries "gaurantee" or make things "mandatory", dont mean people recieve them. So again the map is very misleading on what people actually receive.
I'm glad other people enjoy geography as much as I do.
10:50 Interesting observation, this time, however, I don't think there will be a massive 07/08, it will be worse, and it won't get better. The fed has printed trillions to buy up the market in 2020 and the current administration is not looking to pressure quantitative restriction. Basically what I'm saying is that they have printed a sh8t ton of money, more money per unit of time in recorded American history, the powers that be have no intention of recalling that money they have printed or defaulting on it, so, therefore, massive inflation across the board will happen. It won't be because of Russian hackers, or Trump's "terrible economics", it will be because of the money fraudulent system that has been our money system for the last 100 years.

A little bit of Mormon history: The church converted literally thousands from England and Denmark throughout the 19th century, and almost all of them from that time period immigrated to Utah gather with the rest of the "saints." That's why you see Utah so well represented from those European countries.

I’m Scottish ...The monarchy has strong ties to Scotland (the queen is half Scottish & they spend a lot of time here) & Scotland has always had a monarchy (the first King of Great Britain was Scottish). When/if we go independent, we’ll probably still have the monarchy. The monarchy isn’t really part of the independence debate at all. I’m not a royalist but i can’t see Scotland disowning the queen anytime soon. Maybe after she dies things will change in the whole of the UK

One thing I derive from these maps is that the more vacation you take, the longer you live.
I have worked several jobs where people who used their vacation days regularly were let go. That's how bad it is in the USA.

Fascinating how Tagalog is the most common language spoken in California, but the highest Asian ethnicity is Chinese rather than Filipino. How would you account for that? My guess is that many many of the Chinese in California have been there for well over a hundred years, and though they identify as Chinese ethnically, they don't speak any of the Chinese languages. Or it could just be that there are three major Chinese languages and only one Filipino. Or a combination of those things. What do you think?

Yeah maybe some of those of Chinese descent don't speak the languages. Also I think Filipino migrants might be a slightly newer demographic than the Chinese migrants. Hi from Oakland, CA!
Yeah I definitely think it's because of the fact that there isn't a whole lot of immigration from China anymore and most people of Chinese descent are 3rd generation or more. China is still poor but better off than 50 years ago and fewer people are leaving. When I worked for Monterey County Emergency Management we'd print off flood and earthquake info in English, Spanish, and Tagalog. What's kind of ironic is that English is widely spoken in the Philippines.

I really enjoyed several of your map series. Very informative and without an agenda of your own to keep the info unbiased. I just wanted to mention that the US government along with various charitable organizations settled refugees here in Fort Wayne, IN some years ago from what was formerly Burma, now Myanmar. We have around 10,000 here dating back to their civil war in the 90's, I believe, as well as more Burmese in Indy and other cities in Indiana. California also has a relatively large group. I thought I might get a small adjustment on your language/nationality data maps, and a pin for Fort Wayne.
