- In this video we are going to create the lid for the electronic enclosure. We are going to test the fit using clipping planes and export the STL to Cura to slice the model ready for 3D printing.

After you create your labels in the spreadsheet, run the easy alias macro before entering any values. You can then enter formulas using the alias names instead of the cell location. In cell B17, you can enter =hole_diameter + 2 instead of =B8 + 2.

This and the previous tutorial (drawing the box) are really helpful. It’s now 3 years later and on version 0.21.1 so there are differences but your tutorial is still easy to follow. I changed the lid height to 1 wall thickness and deleted the lidheight variable as a thin lid is my preference. Thanks for making it available to us.

@@Adventuresincreation for me the learning curve is things that are nit obvious to get around. For instance, the lid. Using attachments and positions to relocate the lid. As i go through more vids, I’m sure I’ll be saying “how did he know how to do that !🤔 ✌️

I had an error initially when creating the lid. I did not have a Part containing the 2 Bodies as you used a macro initially to set up the project in the other video. Minor point. I figured that I had to create a Part and then move the 2 Bodies inside.

I followed along with the first tutorial making the box exactly as you did. For my lid, I made it one wall thickness tall. It goes down one wall thickness into the box and one wall thickness from from the inside of the box (plus clearance). I also copied the lug radius onto the lid. This means that 90% of the lid is only one wall thickness tall, so it prints quickly with no wasted plastic.

Great videos, brings home the benefits of parametric designs, very well explained. You mentioned the possibility of adding this to an assembly, would be great to see that. Would also love to see something with print in place hinges on a box, can't find a full demo for freecad anywhere. Can't place your accent, doesn't sound American, dare I say more British ?

In the end I managed to draw exactly like you. I also 3d printed the box and it is ok. Only the thickness of the cover is actually excessive. I should rework the lid thickness calculation a bit.

One trick you can use instead of pocket 'through all' is pocket 'to face' and select a face that you want the pocket to go to, just a bit more precise than through all

Hehe, it can also cause circular dependency issues if your not careful, sledgehammer is good too 🙃
Thanks for the tutorial and it is a good one, especially the spreadsheet and the clearances. But I was thinking that maybe if you create a DatumPlane on the top of the box, then you could perhaps use that plane as a base for the lid (instead of the offset from the XY-plane).Then the lid and the box would be more "independent" of each other. (But I don't know if this would interfere with the mirror function or not).

I am enjoying this leaning curve. I discovered that when constraining the corner radii, we can select all four and constrain the one. The remaining three are automatically set to equal. Saves me a step.
Yeah, the thing I like about it, it's improving all the time. There are some great developers working on it.

@@Whipster-Old I just download it from the download page, although I can build it with conda as I set that up too but I generally wait and get the posted version.
@@Adventuresincreation you might enjoy Chocolatey. Check out Chocolatey package manager, you can then install with "choco install freecad --pre". Easier to keep up to date than manually downloading those pre release builds by hand! NB I'm not affiliated with them, it's open source I just use it a lot.
@@Whipster-Old I did look at it but because I already have Conda installed and set up I can just build on demand from the latest repository. I may install Chocolatey in the future though. I am trying to develop some more "gui" based macros at the moment. I am having fun with Qt5 and creating stuff but nothing releasable yet.
excellent as usual.. @11:50, while making symmetrical, then adding radii constraint, i got error has partially redundant constraints. I deleted the constraint and selected all 4 radii and made equal. Then applied the radii constrint and everything is normal. Thankx for this increditable vid series on the project box.. No w i can modify (hopefully as new to #D modeling) the sizing to my needs and add 2 tabs on the lid to attached to my cymbals.🙏👌👍
aaah i jumped ahead to make them equal, but later @12:25, you mentions you should have made them equal. I guess in version .20.1 flags the error that i had.

Hey there, many thanks for these 2 electronics enclosure videos. I have used this as a base for an arcade joystick that I would like to print at some point. For me, the "lid" of the enclosure becomes the joystick's base, so I have the "top" and "bottom" concepts reversed in my file.
I would like to ask if you can show in a future video the easiest way to add cosmetic features on an edge (e.g. text/shapes that you can pad/pocket).
Also, I just subscribed, congratulations on eventually hitting 1,000 subs in a few days, keep up the good work.

My design will follow the design of an early 90's joystick. The most challenging feature for me will be to add chamfers like the one the original gameboy has at the bottom right. To the best of my understanding the gameboy's chamfer at the bottom right is not just cosmetic but is placed there for ergonomic reasons.

I took a quick look at this. If you use a datum plane to align your chamfers then use make a "thick solid" you will end up with a box that has those chamfers in it.
superb tutorial!!!! is it possible to control the chamfer parametrically if created on a sketch or incorporated in the spreadsheet to constrain its movement in relation to the hole?
Yes, you can set parameters for the chamfer too.
I have yet to draw this but I am really enjoying your videos. New subscriber! Would the wall clearance eventually cause the hole to puncture the edge? More clearance seems like it would break in being the hole has to be in the same spot as the box. I guess I could answer my own question once I draw it.

The new good CAD-Programs are only for rent anymore.
As a single-man-business in Germany I just can´t afford to pay 500 Euro per month for renting a CAD-software while my main business is calculating frames
and using other software. This software is meant for Industry - some fulltime - drawers, who live in their element - with their shortcuts and their productivity.
Anyway, I would like getting better at Freecad and the FEM - workbench.

Thanks Niko. Let me know if I can help you with getting up to speed with FreeCAD. It is a great piece of software that is very capable. Are you just creating technical drawings or are you modeling and 3D printing or CNC routing?
but you are, I assume, an Ingeneer like me.
In Germany they call it "Maschinenbauingenieur" ...
and we have the differenciation to "Civil Engineer". So the civil engineer can construct a steel-frame-building but the "Machinenbauingenieur" not - they are working at Porsche and Mercedes.

Fantastic, so easy (lol). You spend 30 minutes talking, I spend 8 eight (3 times) trying to do. Finally managed, thanks to pause.
Now I'd like the lug at the top tapering to the base, or to the length of the screw (plus a bit), so don't waste space for the board. Also want to add mount points for the PCB. However this is all fancy stuff. The question I have is, can FreeCAD allow multiple Sketches in one project and allow to disable for printing. This way I can use a common template with multiple objects. So one print may include an exhaust outlet for a fan, while another hold a battery container below the PCB, thus needing to raise the lugs holding the PCB, but all with the same calculated dimensions. So so many possibilities.
Keep up the good work. It's clear and concise. I will watch more.

Thanks for taking the trouble to teach 0.19 before it was published as stable. It means your video(s) hasn't lost relevance and shouldn't do for at least the rest of this year and probably not even then.
It's great to see a lot of good tutorials being created now. When I started with FreeCAD a few years ago there wasn't a lot around, and most of those (that were well done) showed just the part workbench or switched between the two (what a headache). I had to transition to the part design workbench under my own steam but I'm learning heaps from these newer videos. Thanks again.

In fact, I did the same, I was trying to use FreeCAD as my daily driver and couldn't find many "good" videos then, I found Fusion 360 and saw the opportunity to use something a little more modern with a free hobbyist license. - In the meantime FreeCAD improved then AutoDesk decided to change the rules for the Fusion 360 hobbyist license. - I saw the writing on the wall and made the leap back to FreeCAD. I haven't looked back since. I love FreeCAD and how extensible it is. There are lots of things to learn with it but the main stay for me, the part design workbench and the sketcher are pretty good. I do use the path workbench and love where it's going although I wish I could help them to move along faster. - It is very capable for the basics but lacks some finesse. I am glad I can help others to use the software and hope that with 0.20 release I can make new videos that highlight those features too.
@@Adventuresincreation Thanks for the reply! You also asked if anyone had anything we'd like you to cover. It's a bit of a complex topic but I've been struggling with threads. I have done them from scratch and discovered that the open source algorithms for circle designs (cutting a spiral sweep with a thread profile) was very hit or miss. Often when you used the correct dimensions it failed to compute, but tweak it just a little off spec and it would work. Rounding errors that the algorithms couldn't resolve, obviously. The method I was using was to create a cylinder, and then use the thread profile to "cut" the thread. It seemed to be the recommended easiest and most reliable method at the time.
I did find the "fasteners" add-on and started using that with very reasonable success. Because I design exclusively for 3D printing most of the threads are large and course: eg. a motor drive unit that pulls the filament out of the airtight containers I have it enclosed in, reducing drag on the direct drive print head (improved my 3D prints immensely) . I used a 3D printed M20 threaded bolt to hold the drive unit vise style on the back of the desk the printer is sitting on. The motor drive is a horrid looking design overall - the M20 bolt is the only thing that has any redeeming aesthetic LOL. So it's been powered on and working constantly for two years now. No need to re-design what just works.
Threads are a complex topic (very specific design criteria) but maybe a tute on sweeps would be good, or maybe a discussion on the circles/sweeps algorithms. Since I started using the fasteners add-on two years ago I've basically forgotten everything I learned, and FreeCAD has become so much better so I wonder if there have been improvements in that area as well. Are they still using those clunky open source algorithms that caused me so much trouble back then?
@@Chrisamic take a look at my latest video it covers threads using the fasteners workbench. I would never bother to model a thread from scratch. There is a setting in the workbench for 3d printing threads. Also, take a look at my beginner video on sweeps along a path. That will help. It's also in the latest video.
@@Adventuresincreation Thanks, I'll definitely rummage through those videos!. If you want to understand threads, model them from scratch (or cut them on a lathe) but yes, the call of the threads workbench is very strong :-D
@@Chrisamic Coming from an engineering background, I have made many threads on the lathe but mostly used taps and dies that's why I love what the fastener workbench has. You can create a hole or a shaft, select a tap or die and just make the thread. It works really well and honestly takes all the pain out of creating threads.
Very very helpful tutorial. Please help us with the screws you plan to use. Do you have a part number or other mechanical details? How much thread engagement is there, that sort of thing.

I follow your steps and made a parametric box with lid and it works fine.
Since I have a PrusaMini with only180x180 mm printing bed I can't do a box sized for my need. Can you design a parametric box with a middle section which can be printed out separately and somehow attached to the other parts?

1. Cut the box and lid in the middle so that they can be printed separately.
2. Make a center sections, with equal profile, that can be inserted between the cut pieces.
3. The pieces should be able to be locked to each other.
@@janhellstrom4165 I will look at it and see what I can come up with. I am not sure why we are adding a center piece, if we were to model it in two parts wouldn't we just print the center piece in place?
It seems that you want to accommodate a larger box on your smaller printer, is that right?
@@Adventuresincreation Just now I have 3d-printed the hinges you designed in your last tutorial. The result is amasing. I did not know that it is possible to print moving parts in one piece, cool!
Regarding the box.
Yes, I wanted to print three parts, each with the maximum length of 180 mm, that gives a box of 540 mm total length, but it's ok to skip the center part and make two pieces with length180 mm each for a 360 mm box. It a simpler solution and I can print one more set if I need.

thank you for the excellent tutorial. I have a question, if I want to use a M3 bolt or screw, do I need to add a thread in the hole?
It depends what type of screw you are using. If you use self-tapping screws you can just make the hole to right size and drive the screw in. If you want to use a machine screw then you will have to model the thread in the hole.

@@jj_uk the plane will not cause the topological naming issue if you do not tie it a face. If you instead, index it from another plane it will be robust.
Quick question, I went thru the box tutorial, then this one. Much success and now I have a nice box. My problem is that when I change something, say box height, the box bottom changes height correctly but the lid stays where it was. It's sketches move up appropriately but the solids (pads pockets, etc.) remain fixed where they were when created. I can't figure out why. Any ideas? Also, thanks for the videos, they really helped me learn to like FreeCad a lot. I used Catia 4 & 5 years ago at work and FC seems a lot like it with respect to workflow with the huge advantage that I can use it at home... and there's a KiCad workbench! Amazing!
Not sure why your lid is not changing. If the sketches are, you may need to hit the refresh button... It's like two blue arrows
Did you have any printing issues with the wall thickness around the lid screw holes: it looked pretty tight in places!

This is a very useful video for me. Thanks a lot. I have some confusion about when to use "hole" or "pocket" though.
In video, at 16:32 you say, quote "...put some holes through this box..." unquote, At 18:34 you say, quote " ...do a pocket through all...", unquote.
I would like to understand when to use what (hole or pocket)?
I am asking this because when I try to reproduce the hole in the lid, no matter what I try, the hole or the pocket, it goes only through the "lid top" or the "lid padding". Never through both.
Any tip about overcoming this problem? Thanks for your help in advance.
By the way, I am using FreeCAD version 0.20.2.
I use pocket 99% of the time. The pocket can only go through the body in which the sketch is located. If you need a hole in a different body, create another sketch.
Absolutely brilliant videos. I am totally new to Freecad, but this has made things so easy. I followed the previous video on the enclosure design and made my own Freecad file.
I exported the .stl file for the body and it printed nicely. Then I did the same for the lid. After a few "glitches" regarding Freecad file types, naming, tree, etc, printing the lid worked just as well.
Since that success, I have tried to alter the design to include a semicircular groove in both the top face of the body (and also into its corresponding lid underside) to accommodate a sealing o-ring all without success.
I have tried using the "groove" and the "fillet" tools, but no go.
The "groove" tool is limited to grooving circular objects only. Is that correct ?
There appears to be no option to invert the "fillet' tool once chosen, in order to create the semicircular channel that I need for my o-ring.
Also, the lid is very thick once printed. Again, I need to know how to "pocket" the lids existing inner face, so that its inside thickness is only "spreadsheet.wall_thickness" deep.
Because of the Topological Naming Problem already known, is it safer to set up a "virtual plane" on the same axis as the top face of the box, and create a new sketch on that ?
I fear that I might be getting in a bit over my depth with this, or are you interested in creating another video to assist "dummies like me" ?

You might want to look at the sweep along a curve and yes, use an offset plane or offset sketch to hollow out the lid. It sounds like you are learning fast!
@@Adventuresincreation Thanks so much for the hasty reply - but I still have trublems. I will try the lid "hollow out" a bit later, but for now, I can't seem to grasp how to "sweep along a curve". I have created two sketches under "Multi Transform" (1 for the profile cross section {on the xz axis}, and another for the path which the profile should take {on the xy axis}). The "Part Design" and "Part" toolboxes behave differently, so which to choose (and when) ?
If I use "Part Design", after selecting "Sweep a selected sketch along a path or to other profiles and remove it from the body", I never get the chance to select a face in "Pipe Parameters".
There is only a blank "Object" field there. Why do I not get a chance to insert my second sketch as that object's path for it to follow ?
What should be easy has become far from that. Do I use the "Part" toolbox, or the "Part Design" toolbox, as they appear to behave quite differently here.
The FreeCAD site (and help) seem to not cover any of this. P.S. I am using the latest v0.19.

I have made 2 valid, constrained sketches, which have placed themselves under the "Multi Transform" branch of the tree (or is that wrong ?). One is the o-ring profile, the other is the path. However, when I try to set up a subtractive pipe, I get an error saying "Pipe: No valid sketch or face as first section". My question is: on which axes should the cross-section profile be drawn, and should it be on a plane other than that used fo the path sketch ? I've tried everything, over many hours, and about to sling it in the "too hard" basket. More help is desperately needed, please.
@@kevingpearce yes, the profile sketch has to be on a different plane to the path. Imagine the shape traveling along the path, if it is laying flat you won't get the shape you want
Can't you just project other body geometry onto the sketch like you do in F360? It saves so much time while keeps design parametric.

To make the lid, could you not make a copy of the initial body, and modify it to make the lid? Unless I missed something, the sketch is basically the same, no?
You certainly can do that, take a look at #42 and #43 for ideas on how to do this.

Why when adding the holes to the lid is it a “new sketch” ?
This is something I’m finding hard with FreeCAD. Why couldn’t, for example, the holes be added to the lid sketch? The very first sketch you did on this video?
What am I missing ?

Hi Graham, if you make the holes part of the first sketch they will be through holes. There are many ways to skin a cat

Or does that simply not matter because once it’s saved, using 1 or multiple sketches, the tool paths don’t care?

It's completely parametric, you can make the holes any size to fit whatever screws you have.
I'm stuck again, I have moved the box lid to the top of the box (perfect) when I create a sketch, the XY plane is on the bottom of the box not the lid. any suggestions?
Hi Danny, you can offset the sketch in the Z direction by closing the sketch, click on it in the model tree then in the data block at the bottom change its attachment. That should move the sketch to whatever you want it.
@@Adventuresincreation i have created the lid off set so that means i have 2 sketches to move on the Z axes now? This isn't working i have to deconstruct my drawing just to put holes in the lid. This dog is loosing the trail!
I have created a pocket, but the hole is only in the "lid offset" not the lid. Changing the pocket parameters doesn't make any changes. It's like the lid and the offset are two different drawings that just happens to be next to each other.

Hmmm… this is where i get connected. To add 2 tabs on the lid, can’t add to sketch003 or create another sketch because a tab will be another solid which is not supported. What approach do i take? I can create another body and sketch. If the tab is a rectangle, how is it attached to the lid horizontally as part of the lid? Probably wrong approach 🤔 thankx
Btw, rectangle also will have through pocket for screw to attach box

I followed the TH-cam film , but when I change for example the lenght of the lid , the box will stay the same. How can I solve this problem ?
Carefully check that you have assigned the dimensions spreadsheet values.
when i copy the spreadsheet ,then i can adjust the lid and the box individual , but not simultaneously
@@franknaets1370 You should be able to modify the spreadsheet and any dimensions linked to it will change.
In the Windows 10 freeCAD .19 version 24291 I found that there must be a default radius size, if I select the fillet and just select the box corner a radius is created. Then all 4 corners are created the same size (but only equal by coincidence), you still have to further constrain them.
(Sorry - I said radius constraint and meant fillet - corrected!)
Now if I can just figure out why the pad only made a lid rim and not like your picture. :) It looks like a square rubber band! :( Nothing in the center. I must have skipped a step.
Maybe one of your pads is in the wrong direction. The size of the radii depends on where you pick points as you add it.
@@Adventuresincreation I think many of my problems arise from not having the focus? on the correct place/plane (always the xy) but not the correct place in the parts lineup - if that makes sense. I finally got the pads right on the lid (I think) but now the hole only goes through the inside lid pad even though I clicked through all as you showed. This is confusing since I started the sketch as you did I think - top view.
I have a CarveWright and use the designer it comes with and when you click on a line in the sketch or click on an object on the left parts list box it is highlighted in both places. I don't find that happening for me in freeCAD. Also I am having problems getting objects to hide/unhide and if I do my focus seems to change at times.
@@davidpanetta5492 it's probably just a matter of getting used to it. You should be able to select any part /body from the model tree and then hit the spacebar to toggle it on and off.
@@Adventuresincreation Thats what I thought, but when I click on parts in the tree, then the space bar, nothing happens most times. When it works and I click back to the part I am working on, if I click back to the hidden part and hit space, it often will not become visible again. Assuming my model is ok, something I am doing is wonky.

I have version 0.21 and the sketch "z" position is greyed out. (Time 8:25/27:35 and the same thing happens in 15:14/27:35) And when I came to make a hole inverted is only the top layer the (upper side of the lid) with hole. Can anyone give me a hint where I'm making a mistake? THX

hi everyone, I am having a problem transitioning from the drawn box to drawing the lid, the box wont disappear from the work bench so i can draw the lid. I am using v0.19. I have watched the video frame by frame and i can find the step on how the box is selected, i see the wire frame around the edges but my drawing doesn't do that the hole box is selected and turns green. I can select a body create a sketch but the box does not go away so i can draw the lid. any help would be appreciated.
Try going to the model tab on the left hand side. Click on the box then press the spacebar. That should hide it.
Thank you it worked one time but i could not select the work plane. I do not have a (new part) icon under the (electronics_box) icon.

I don't get it. I'm very familiar with 2d CAD, but I can't even get past drawing a square and centering and dimensioning in this frustrating program. If I follow the tutorial, many if the of the menus he shows aren't visible, I can't seem to select anything etc. Even following his steps one by one, some things simply don't work.
Do you have the same version as in the video? Some of the icons may be obscured if you haven't spread them out.
Initially I had this problem too. The default configuration for the toolbars looks very different on my laptop to that shown in your videos (may be screen size dependant?) If you haven't already produced one, perhaps a video showing how to reproduce something similar to your setup?
