  • Can this pop gun sub gauge actually stand up to a ticky sporting layout?
Excited, Nervous, and completely confidence free I entered the .410 handicap challenge at Casa De Campo's 2023 Sugar Shoot. However, the competition went, this jungle-based shooting ground in the Dominican Republic is never a bad place to spend a day!

A Stevens .410 was my first shotgun. It put quite a few rabbits in the pot. Still have it as it was a hand me down from my Grandpaw. I don't hunt anymore but once in a while I shoot a few clays with it.

Johnny, you want to excel at 410 get Jim at Longthorne build you a set of fluted barrels for your gun that balances the same as your 12 bore...Then go win the British 410 Open

  • @STTrout

Spend your whole life learning site pictures with a 12 bore then pretty much chuck them all in the bin when you pick up a .410. British open .410 the end of the month at Churchill's. Cant wait 😂

American Skeet has sub-gauge events (20ga, 28ga and .410 - no 16ga). They don't shoot sub-gauge guns. They have sub-gauge tubes that they put in their 12ga. guns. Briley is ...the only sub-gauge tubes I see on skeet fields, but may be other manufacturers too, idk... I'm guessing the challenge is breaking the targets with less shot, because otherwise, the gun is the same 12ga... And I can understand how 14 grams of shot can make breaking that target more difficult than 21 or 24 grams...
...now... for practical purposes... I see very little use of a .410... (around here, the typical example would be shooting grouse, up North, while moose hunting...)
Nevertheless, that looks like a lot of fun!
And great filming and editing! 💯❗👍

As much as I love 410s. Mine haven’t left the safe in years due to not being able to buy 3” 7.5 shells for hunting. Seen a lot of 410s on the shelves at the gun stores for the same reason.

Like most that have posted comments I love the 410 and has accounted for a great deal of vermin over the years at the correct range and cartridge for that range and quarry.
There lies the problem with the UK heading towards lead free, finding a suitable alternative load for humane dispatch in the smaller calibres.
Steel in the larger pellet sizes even in a 3" rolled crimp with a plastic wad just won't give the pattern density required for reasonable self imposed ranges at live quarry.
Bismuth on the other hand ticks all the boxes apart from the price tag of £1,500-£1,700 per thousand, which sharp mounts up if you're using 3-4k per year.
I've shot nothing but a 28 bore for the last 5 years for driven, walked up and vermin control reverting back to the 20 and 12 for none toxic use on duck and geese.
Due to the lack of alternative lead free loads from manufacturers for small bores that will provide similar down range ballistics apart for the aforementioned bismuth I can see my small bores been moved to the back of the gun cabinet.
When I contacted eley gamebore and express they all said the same when there is demand they will invest in alternatives for the smaller bores.
Hopefully your and other TH-cam channels that are currently running small bore shows will drive this demand that the manufacturers need 🤞
In the meantime currently trying to put together a 19gram 4 Steel with plas wad for the 28 bore but will be nowhere near the current 23 and 25 gram 6&5 lead fibre loads I use.

BPI TPS wads and polished Fe5-7 shot for 410 works for walk up, ≤20m. A bit further depending on quarry and shot size. Always pattern of course, and extended chokes for steel seem to be a bit better at times.
