either the love song is the most difficult song form to do well or I’ve had some kind of thirty-year-old mental block that decided to finally resign its infuriating post as my tormenter.

Something clicked, though. The hurdle was always a campiness: where do you take a story that more or less says, “I found what I’m looking for and now I have it thank you very much the end?”
This is how it happened:
Over the last few years I found myself so in love with my childhood sweetheart and she, washing her hair in the shower, looked up through a tangle of suds and asked, “are you ever going to write a song about me?”
I laughed that I’d like to, but writing love songs for me is like one of those dreams where you try to scream but it comes out a whisper.
Then I left for Ruidoso (thoughts to the little mountain town, which is currently recovering from an awful fire) to record something new, and, facetiming her from my cabin bed, realized how seldom we actually get to spend time with each other anymore-she, with her hair hanging and pole dancing and contortion and whatever other circus-craziness she does, and me with my tours and albums.
I’m so thankful for my life and where it’s taken me, but I do miss just kind of aimlessly, well, hanging around with her.
And then it hit me. I’d been fundamentally misunderstanding the idea of love song as form.
What in life is as simple as getting it, the thing you want. You’ve found a relationship you love, but how do you enjoy it? How do you live it? When is there not a negotiation for how, or if, you get to keep it?
Maybe love songs are less about the love itself and more about the longing for the love. If you don’t mind another reduction: maybe every good story is about a character longing for someone or something?
And so I ended up with this, my first love song, its chorus dreaming of getting to see her again (but in a minor key). Longing, wanting to feel seen, understood, together, but from a distance. It feels like something you might be able to understand…
