@Bstar’s Worldyes, all ISRC numbers are formatted the same. The last five digits however that are assigned for music videos should start with the number 9.
The Music Business Made Easy Why should a music video with the same song have a different ISRC code? Curious? Is it because sometimes music videos have different extra sounds in them?
@@Bodybagzo you mean .org. Yes, that's the address if you desire to purchase a registrant code for your company so you can assign your own isrc numbers. The first address, is for you to simply purchase your own isrc numbers to use. Your distributor can easily assign them as well.
Hi! I was wondering how do I attach/connect/register my ISRC code to my music video for tracking purposes (BDS & Mediabase)? I know you said sound recordings & music video need two different ISRC's, but how does it work when I'm trying to chart on Billboard thru tv & radio airplay
Charting on Billboard has nothing to do with your ISRC number, but only in connecting the song back to it's rightful owner. ISRC is assigned to the recording. Like your ss# is assigned to your name. Many people have the same name, many people have the same titles to songs. BDS and Mediabase is for the sound recording, not the video.
Hi Mariea. Great video by the way. I needed that. I was wondering when publishing the songs with BMI, do I need ISRC codes for them? And is there a way to know what ISRC codes I have attached to a track if I have misplaced my word document file I had them listing on? Thanks for getting back to me. MRT :)
Thank you! You can find your ISRC codes inside of your distributor’s dashboard if you released the songs. If you purchased them through another avenue then you would need to check back with them. When registering with BMI they don’t require the ISRC code to register tour songs.
Hi again Mariea. Hope all is well. I was just wondering if I have a certain MP3 song that I have input the isrc code into, and I split that song up into several parts in a video, is the isrc code still imbedded in the parts that I have split up? Or does the ISRC code only work at the beginning of the song? Thanks for getting back to me.
I have my own ISRC and UPC codes embedded in my files with cover art and was wondering what is the benefit of having your own codes vs having an aggregator assigned them. What I do know is that the aggregators don't do embedding but only assigned. What's the difference ? Thanks for the info sister. God Bless :)
You’re welcome, thanks for watching. It’s a matter of taking control of your assets verses having your assets controlled by another party. Yet, no difference per se. All songs need an assigned number. It’s a matter of preference on who assigns it. Embedding information gives immediate access to that information within the file. It’s especially useful when seeking radio play and for tracking if data gets lossed or accidentally erased. All songs need to be registered in order for the information to be tracked back to the owner. Sometimes people fail to properly register their music, if that happens and the music is embedded that’s another way to help identify the owner and who to pay.
Hello, I saw some very conflicting info a few mins concerning this and I'd like to get your thoughts and feedback before going any further and spending money etc...Basically, the guy was saying you don't need the ISRC codes if you're (only planning to release a digital copy) of your album online... So knowing this would I still need to apply for the codes anyway and if yes why?
@@ChrisJohnsonTV1980 every song needs an ISRC code. It's what helps to identify the song to the Artist, the writer and the publisher. It's a part of the metadata. You can apply for your own codes, or you can allow the distributor that you choose to assign one to your song(s). The song won't be released without it. If you don't provide one, one will be assigned.
Very informative, I have a small doubt and would love to get a reply. Lets say I release a track on streaming platforms and release a music video for the same ( with the same audio ) I do well with the promotions and within a week of the release, get to a number of streams, views, sales and downloads that are eligible for getting listed on the charts such as billboards and UK charts. Now, Nielsen says that they count both streams on platforms, and views on youtube to tally the total number of sales and submits it for the charts. In this case, doesnt having two isrc codes for the same track split my total number ? For instance, if the total number of views and streams combined for getting on the charts were 1.6million, and my video has 1 million views and the stream counts come to a total of 900k , I do get to the numbers on the song that were required , but because of the codes being different, individually neither of these codes have the number of sales thats required to be on the charts. Would they be counted separately now?
The two codes only serve to designate whether played via video or as audio, but it’s the same song. If the charting uses both sales and streams, it’s combined. If only streams, then that’s what’s counted. If there has been a change in the process, I’m not updated on it. Charting for Pop is different from Gospel. Go by whatever the chart specifies… if for a given week the chart is based on the number of sales and streams, it would be the highest from those two criteria. Hope that makes sense.
Hey. Great video. Question, if I have multiple people on one song, do we each need different codes? And if it's my song and am featuring another artist, how is it known that the song is mine?
No, you only need one code. This code is for the sound recording. When you register the song with your PRO, you enter the writer/publisher information there. Also when you register the song with the library of congress, it is known also registered that the song belongs to you!
It’s good to assign ISRC codes to your music even on your site, because once you release it, others can legally do covers of the music (with a license of course) and you may one day decide to distribute it.
Question: I asked CD baby are the assigned ISRC codes by them embedded in the download if someone downloads it , basically, will that download still have the data embedded in file, they said no, they only assign ISRC for their tracking purposes . So my question is, if that download does not have code embedded, what if person uses my song somewhere else, how can it be tracked ? Am I thinking to much here 🤣 🤦🏿♂️? Should I get my own ISRC before sending to aggregator ? Thank you 🤷🏿♂️
Yes you are over thinking it. CD Baby is a distributor, and they collect the song information from you and pass that along with your song. Embedding is not their job. Once a code is assigned to the song and the registrations are done, the song can then be tracked back to you the owner. That is done with registrations. Embedding information (I do have a specific video that shows you exactly how to do it) is great in that the information is in the song itself; especially useful with terrestrial radio, or anyone searching for metadata, they have it immediately. Not doing so doesn’t mean the info isn’t available. That’s why registrations are so important.
@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy Thank you for quick reply, (God Send). Question, how do you mean registration exactly, you mean registration with PRO and sound exchange etc. or registration with embedded info like usisrc.org. Also, My music is international targeted and religious based. Should I still go through the same account process that a Hip Hop, Pop and R&B artist would go through?. Like, do I need registration to accounts like Nielsen BDS, soundscan etc? I have some account registration experience in the past when I was targeting the Hop Hop, Pop and R&B genre. It was a lot of work 😩. I am trying something new now which is not the normal. Im creating my own genre and not expecting radio play for this kind of music, maybe just streams. So would I need to register to accounts that would track radio play etc? Thank You Regards Wali 😊.
@@nasheedhopproductions3149 yes, I mean with PRO’s etc. register in all of those places. It’s important to take care of the song first! Don’t lower your expectations. You don’t know what will happen but always prepare for it! Once it’s set up properly, it’s set to soar however high you choose!
@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy so when I do that, what happens when the artiste decide to put a vocal on the beat and distribute it, it was have a separate isrc code for the song different from the beat?
True Instrumentalist every time someone new writes to your leased beat, it constitutes a new and different work. Therefore, when that Artist gets ready to release their version, it will require a new ISRC #.
The Music Business Made Easy oh ok. So now when I buy an ISRC code, how can I attach it to my video.
Hey can you please do one adding Isrc’s to mp4! And also is adding a Isrc the sam thing as content Id
Already done. Here’s the link:

No , adding ISRC is not the same as content ID.

@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy Hi I’m having trouble uploading mp4 file to sound grinder to add Isrc could you go more into detail
@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy Thank you sister.... God Bless :)

can you apply for the ISRC codes directly from their website and apply them to Distrokid instead of CD Baby that offers the codes to you?
Hello, I saw some very conflicting info a few mins concerning this and I'd like to get your thoughts and feedback before going any further and spending money etc...Basically, the guy was saying you don't need the ISRC codes if you're (only planning to release a digital copy) of your album online... So knowing this would I still need to apply for the codes anyway and if yes why?
@@ChrisJohnsonTV1980 yes you can. You can also apply them with CD Baby. They give you the option to include your own if you have them
@@ChrisJohnsonTV1980 every song needs an ISRC code. It's what helps to identify the song to the Artist, the writer and the publisher. It's a part of the metadata. You can apply for your own codes, or you can allow the distributor that you choose to assign one to your song(s). The song won't be released without it. If you don't provide one, one will be assigned.

Very informative,
I have a small doubt and would love to get a reply.
Lets say I release a track on streaming platforms and release a music video for the same ( with the same audio )
I do well with the promotions and within a week of the release, get to a number of streams, views, sales and downloads that are eligible for getting listed on the charts such as billboards and UK charts.
Now, Nielsen says that they count both streams on platforms, and views on youtube to tally the total number of sales and submits it for the charts.
In this case, doesnt having two isrc codes for the same track split my total number ?
For instance, if the total number of views and streams combined for getting on the charts were 1.6million, and my video has 1 million views and the stream counts come to a total of 900k , I do get to the numbers on the song that were required , but because of the codes being different,
individually neither of these codes have the number of sales thats required to be on the charts.
Thanks 10000% god blessings to you and you business so grateful ty ty ty

Question. I'm an independent artist and I release my music on my website. Since I don't have a distributor. Do I need to purchase IRSC codes?
It’s good to assign ISRC codes to your music even on your site, because once you release it, others can legally do covers of the music (with a license of course) and you may one day decide to distribute it.
Hi Miss Maries, can FL Studio do this ISRC codes...
I’m sorry, I don’t use FL Studio so I don’t know.
Thank You
Regards Wali 😊.
@@nasheedhopproductions3149 yes, I mean with PRO’s etc. register in all of those places. It’s important to take care of the song first! Don’t lower your expectations. You don’t know what will happen but always prepare for it! Once it’s set up properly, it’s set to soar however high you choose!
Should I use isrc code for my beats when I lease them on a beat selling platform?
True Instrumentalist yes! I would!
@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy so when I do that, what happens when the artiste decide to put a vocal on the beat and distribute it, it was have a separate isrc code for the song different from the beat?
@@relaxingsoundsofnature3390 yes! Any new version requires a new ISRC.
@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy can u please explain further?
True Instrumentalist every time someone new writes to your leased beat, it constitutes a new and different work. Therefore, when that Artist gets ready to release their version, it will require a new ISRC #. If someone does a re-mix, creates a cover of one of the songs already released, they will need a new ISRC for their release etc
If I just need an ISRC code for one song can I go through CDbaby instead of paying the $90 for a unch opf ISRC codes from the ISRC agency?
Yes, CDBbay can assign you one.

is it illegal if somebody add multiple ISRC codes for one track released in different compilations?
For each “different” release, version (radio edit, live version etc, there should be a different ISRC#.
@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy ok understand that, but what happens when is not "radio edit, live, etc" and is the same identical track, which has been released in different compilations with different ISRC codes? is this illegal? is there some law about it?
@@MrDobleagent if the song is exactly the same, then no, it doesn’t need a new number. Only the master rights owner (label etc) that’s in charge of the release should be assigning the number. If it is used on a new compilation, no new number is necessary. It however, is not illegal. It just shows whomever is doing this and allowing it is not fully knowledgeable on how the business works.
@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy Thank you for your comprehensive answer, do you think there is some malintended purpose or some possible "breach" that allows more profit for someone to use different ISRC codes on a track that is identical on every release, and who also does this on a massive scale with many artists?
