Wendler ist gelernter Speditionskaufmann. Mit 21 Jahren stieg er in die Spedition seines Vaters ein und musste für drei Millionen Euro Schulden gerade stehen. Er versuchte, die Schulden durch Einnahmen aus zwei Sexshops und Auftritte in Diskotheken und Bierzelten auszugleichen, musste aber 2002 Privatinsolvenz anmelden. 1998 verhalf ihm der Sänger und Radiomoderator Jürgen Renfordt (WDR 4) zu seinem ersten Plattenvertrag. 1999 gründete er noch im laufenden Insolvenzverfahren gemeinsam mit seiner späteren Ehefrau Claudia Norberg die Schallplattenfirma CNI Records. Erfolgreiche Titel Wendlers sind u. a. Sie liebt den DJ, Nina und I Don’t Know. Wendler schreibt seine Lieder und Texte unter dem Pseudonym Mic Skowy selbst. Er hat nie eine klassische Musikausbildung erhalten. Vielmehr hat er die Melodien für seine Titel laut eigener Aussage im Kopf und „summt“ sie seinem Produzenten Hermann Niesig vor, der sie dann im Tonstudio in den typischen „Wendler-Sound“ umsetzt.[Nach einem langjährigen Vertrag mit der eigenen, kleineren Plattenfirma CNI Records (Claudia Norberg International) wechselte er 2007 zum Plattenlabel Ariola des Major-Labels Sony BMG. In den ersten zwei Jahren bei Ariola verkaufte er über 400.000 CD-Einheiten. Seine Titel werden seitdem von Hermann Niesig produziert. 2007 betrug seine Gage bei Auftritten 4200 Euro für eine halbe Stunde. Vor den Augen von 12 000 Fans in der Arena Oberhausen schenkte Wendler im gleichen Jahr der Leiterin seines Fan-Clubs Andrea Dreide als Dank für ihre jahrelange unentgeltliche Arbeit ein Auto. Später korrigierte er nichtöffentlich, dass es sich nur um einen Mietwagen handelte. Wendler veröffentlichte Ende April 2007 eine Neuauflage des Lieds Sie liebt den DJ und erreichte im Direkteinstieg Platz 27 in den deutschen Singlecharts. Am 29. Juni 2007 erschien das Album Best of Vol. 1. Am 4. April 2008 wurde sein Album Unbesiegt veröffentlicht. Im September 2008 wurde er mit Gold für mehr als 100.000 verkaufte Einheiten des Albums Best of Vol.1 ausgezeichnet. 2009 erhielt er auch Gold für Unbesiegt.
2010 veröffentlichte er seine Biografie "Faust des Schlagers", worin er mit allen abrechnete, die ihn enttäuscht hatten. Seinen Vater Manfred Skowronek bezeichnet er darin als "Prahlhans und Blender", seine Mutter Christine als "Bastard, das ungewollte Kind der Sünde". Auch über seine Sängerkollegen lästerte er, titulierte u. a. Mickie Krause als „Ideenlose Knalltüte“, worauf dieser u. a. konterte „Der Wendler ist einer der meistgehassten Männer Deutschlands. Ich glaub’, der muss mal zum Arzt.“ Dieter Bohlen konterte Wendlers Lästerei später mit "Ach du Scheisse! Der Wendler muss auf dem Klo auftreten, damit es voll wird." Im September 2011 eröffnete er zusammen mit Markus Krampe das „Tanzlokal Nina“ in Bottrop, in dem Schlagersänger regelmäßig auch live auftreten. Nachdem Rechtsanwalt Christopher Posch 2012 in seiner Doku-Reihe "Christopher Posch - Ich kämpfe für Ihr Recht!" bei RTL den Fall von Silvia (54) und Nadine Simbeck (28) aus Chemnitz übernommen hatte (siehe unten), geriet Wendler in einen der größten Shitstorms gegen einen deutschen Prominenten. Der Facebook-Gruppe "100.000 Menschen die Michael Wendler scheiße finden" folgten innerhalb eines Tages 200.000 Personen. Ende 2012 gab Wendlers Manager Markus Krampe bekannt, dass er wegen "nicht überbrückbarer, grundsätzlich unterschiedlicher Auffassungen über zukünftige Projekte" Wendler nicht mehr betreue. Ein Jahr später erneuerten die beiden ihre Zusammenarbeit. - เพลง
