I took my reel apart, and was just about to give up, and toss it away. I then discovered this video, which helped me realize that the brass gear was stuck to the metal spool rod
Dennis I have a abu round bait caster I'm not sure what it is but it has a reverse dog ear on it the numbers on it are 02 o3 07 when you go to release the line with a weight on it it wont drop.to the floor
Thanks so much for the video. Tremendous help. Maybe a little helpful advise of putting the camera straight down instead of at an angle. Spent the whole time with my head crooked lol.
Sorry for the neck ache! I am a one man does all, so I need to focus the camera and be able to see what I am doing as well as do it. This angle seems to help there. I will try to get it a little more viewer friendly - Best wishes for a speedy recovery! Dennis
I would like to see a video on removing and replacing the handle bearing on a Abu Garcia 6500.I have been told you have to press them out. Thanks lonnie
New to your channel. I service and repair reels as a hobby. I mostly work on Ambassadors. I have several 6000's that feel tight when reeling, like it has some brake applied. What causes this?
The most common cause is an overtightened spool adjuster that is located behind the handle. Another cause can be too much grease or dirt in the level wind worm gear and pawl. Stuck or broken bearings could also contribute to the performance problems - Dennis
Dennis- the little e-clip below the handle cover went flying on me so i put back together with out- What purpose does it serve? Is it necessary? Thanks
That clip holds the gear sleeve onto the bridge post. The whole handle assembly will move in and out without the clip to hold it in place. That may cause the free spool to stick and not return when cranked - It should be replaced - Dennis
You should be able to find these on Ebay and other sites. Most brakes are interchangeable between models. As a bush fix, you can make your own brakes if needed. Use the small "straw" tube that comes as a spray can nozzle insert. and clip small segments to act as the brakes. - Dennis
Hey Dennis, I usually do a total strip and clean after 4 days of commercial fishing with my 6601 AB's . I haven't been lubing the needle bearings with reel oil on the anti reverse but find they've been rusting. I do thoroughly spray them with WD40 then suck it up with cotton swabs and leave it dry. Should I be oiling them seeing how their rusting? Thanks!!
That is a weak point of the reels. Those bearing as meant to be dry, but unfortunately, they are steel and that does rust. I think you are doing it right. Best I could offer is to try a drop of oil and see if it holds the next time out. If it does, then keep using the light oil. If not, well then we will both know the answer to your question - Thanks for the note - Dennis
Thanks for the great service Dennis - nicely done and it is really appreciated!
My pleasure - I meant to let you know that the video was posted! Best wishes - Dennis

I haven't. done that. If the handle is broken, I will replace it. I believe that the knobs are pressed in or peened - Dennis
Thank You Mr. Dennis, as always a great video!

I have trouble finding the breaks for the same reel. I picked up a reel someone tried to “fix” .

Can u get bearings for them
Yes - try Bocabearings.com or Smoorhdrag.com as both carry bearings for the series - Dennis

Got it Thank you!
A little bit of Reel Butter fishing oil did the trick. Anti reverse held and no rusting!
Good to know. I will add that to my notes - Best wishes - Dennis
Quick update, don't use Penn reel grease on anti reverse needle bearings. Gave it a shot, no good, a little oil works perfectly.
Do you work on pen 10 reels
Yes I do. Please send a note to my email 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com for service and repair information - Dennis
