    It gets rather warm. The neat thing about a project like this is that it puts the heat right where you want it. A number of commercially made battery electric cars use heated seats and steering wheel because it's more efficient to put the heat right there than to heat the entire cabin.

    I don't have any nichrome wire. I'd consider it for a future project.
    PWM if fun stuff. This really doesn't need it. On/Off works just fine. Nice and simple.

    I was looking at those 12 volt thermal blankets and I'm thinking of putting one of those on a coat .then I'm thinking of thermal heated socks,hats,gloves...this is going to be fun..thank you for the ideas..you have me thinking..

    Nice, how warm does it get? You should use one of those hand crank dynamos like they use for emergency flashlights to charge the battery, and a couple radio shack 12v voltage regulators.

    I don't know how long the battery lasts, it hasn't run out yet. The battery is lithium, but I couldn't locate an AH rating on it. The heater is only .73 amps. Just a guess from the size of the battery is that it's likely around 2Ah. So, two hours of run time would take it to 75% discharge.
    Shoveling my driveway after a bad snowstorm can take 40 minutes, so the battery is plenty big for my use.

    This is an AMAZING idea! But you should work on hooking this up to a solar powered source for those of us who want a heated coat when we're walking around nowhere near a power source!

    • @JustinVodden
      @JustinVodden 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol, a solar powered heater. who woulda thunk it?

  • @BenjaminNelsonX

    It's 9 watts. Not exactly firing up a coal plant to run it. If you are serious here (I didn't see a little winking smily face) please know that by driving slightly slower in a car, or turning lights off when you leave a room, you can more than enough make up for the 9 watts used in a heated coat.

    Wonderful insight Ben. I know a young man who is very interested in your kind of innovation. How could he link with you?

    Hi Ben, nice project, Why didnt you just use nichrome wire? Also for the future It would be also nice to use PWM to adjust the heat intensity and power consumption!

    i consider the best place to ask this. why the heated pad alone for DIY on OEM seat cost an eyeball respect a actual heated seat that goes on top of the OEM seat? i mean there is more stuff and labour on it... why on ebay they cost less? they are less powerfull?, thank you anybody including the mighty Benj for any clue.

    9 watts is only 30.70927 BTUh. An old guy like me, needs at least 50 BTU per hour.. :)
    Anyways, the price is right. The heated jackets sold on Ebay are in the $150 range. Some are equipped with a nice charger and a modern lightweight battery. One ad claimed 6 hours of heating.
    I was considering buying a "WarmGear Battery Heated Fleece Jacket" to wear when shoveling snow. But with global warming coming, it's not really a good investment.
    Besides, in the Boston area, it's always pretty mild.

    Use a solar tube heat liquid metal and circulate it through an insert in your coat. No need for electric! Novartis!

    How about the fact that he kept the heating element and wiring n such out of the landfill? He repurposed an item that would have ended up polluting the land, and is keeping warm with minimal cost, so there! Pffffff... :>P

    If the choice was between heating the whole garage or just one person then I would say he went green by orders of magnitude.

    why not buy your own heating wire 30awg? that was more cheaper

    Sorry I was wrong. Assume 1/3earth population use your fancy coat. The drain over all is 20,000 mega watts. I think a coal plant is around 100 to 500 MW so you will add 40 new coal plants to our earth with your invention...thanks again!

    I wouldn't be anywhere near an airport with those wires hanging out the coat and visible - you know what i mean ;>) good idea though

    There is no overpopulation problem (have you ever been to Nevada?), but unfortunately I can't refute that we have too many useless people in the world. Ben's trying to change a few of the useless ones into more useful ones, so I applaud him.

      aww. i want to make one but i want to put it into a hooded sweatshirt as a mid layer for fishing in early spring / late autumn

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +2DNoodles Just make yours so that the electrical parts stay in place with snaps or velcro. That way, you can take the heating element and wiring out and still machine wash the sweatshirt.

  • @tacozar

    9watts is nothing! if everyone on earth saved 9watts we could shut down a dirty coal plant. it starts with 9watts. next you will want heated boots , then mitts where does it end. when will you stop. please think of the children.

    Haha is this a prank video. You're all about being green and saving energy, now you put POWER to your coat! Why not just add more stuffing, or a sweater, or get a new warmer coat? Why add a carbon foot print where none was before? Is your fancy coat worth the life of our planet? How dare you!
