Not in all cases. You can hide 1 archer behind a shield, send them into enemy's archer range to focus all their attention and easily rush enemy keep with melee units.
Yeah in this particular situation it’s suicide to them, but in pretty much every other situation it does make sense for your ranged units to save themselves from other ranged units first, and it’s true that it sometimes becomes an issue. That’s why it’s very important to know this interaction between units, or else your archers will die to melee units, or even worse: « watch your back knight ! Watch your back… »
I wish it was the same with tower balistas and catapults, you should select the catapults one by one when there are other units in range, it's so stupid
Yes but what would have happened if they saw the slaves first is that each archer would kill their respectively selected slave, then they would scan the area for a next target to shoot, and they would then retarget an other archer because YES, they prioritize other ranged units, not just archers or crosbowmen, but also rock flingers, siege units such as balistae and catapults, and even flame throwers (ever wondered why when you send archers to clear caliph’s dungeon, only the swordsmen are left ? That’s why!) Trust me, I’ve played this game and exploited this particular knowledge very thoroughly ~
You kill what hurts you directly, it is so obvious.
that's why horse archers are excellent at distracting the defense from firing at your main units
It makes sense!

the question is which long range unit(s) they'll attack first?
I think the weaker health first then crosbows.
I see my archers tend to do ranged units ->siege ->assassins -> everything else
Unless maybe assassins climb higher? I sometimes see my units prioritize them over standing archers/siege

tower balistas should prioritize siege units first
Archers came first than slaves in their firing range.
