I read non-fiction almost exclusively. I do the same thing as you, two or three non-fiction books (more if I can) on a topic and then maybe a historical fiction novel that fits to put some “meat on the bones” of the history. I call them my projects.🙂 I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the Roman and Viking histories…they look great. I just found your channel. Watching this video reminded me that I own Sea People, so when you mentioned that you liked the audiobook, I paused the video and bought the audiobook and I can’t wait to read and listen to it. I really enjoyed this video and can’t wait to watch more!
Ooooo good to hear you enjoyed The Crusades. It'll take a little motivation for me to start that big boy. Also, I'm ~2/3 into ALMOST HUMAN right now, which was definitely a recommendation from you! I don't know anything about prehistory and am blown away simply by the concept that there were many, many extinct species on the homo sapien family tree. Seems so silly to think otherwise in retrospect! I saw on IG that you recently recommended a book by Paul Pettit so I'm going to check that one out too afterwards!!!

I’d check out Stacey Schiff’s biography of Cleopatra, I think she’s someone who balances historical sources and analysis of those sources really brilliantly
I love ancient history! I am in the middle of listening to an audiobook on Classical Greek mythology and what it says about the Ancient Greek people and their society. It’s fascinating and the audiobook is set up almost like a 101 unit from university. Thanks for the recs.
I should have added one of your recommendations - can't remember the exact title but it had to do with murder in Rome and it has a light pink cover. I remember your review on it! Hope the move is going well :)
I mostly read non-fiction, about 90% of the books I own is non-fiction.....I would recommend books by Adrian Goldworthy for Roman History; one of a few favorites for Roman History.
Oh wow he's got a huge backlist, I haven't read anything from Goldworthy in the past. I might try Caesar: Life of a Colossus first! Thanks for the rec!

Thank you for this! It was very insightful and helped me add to my book list. Funnily enough, your interests (being broad in scope) are similar to mine. I enjoy history, but at the same time also look into paleoanthropology and human evolution (Kindred by Rebecca Wragg-Sykes was a great read and I highly recommend), so I found that really cool.
I read a lot about ancient history but find the books hard to follow. They really jump around with names, dates and places by the time i finish i forget half of what ive read. Just now finishing Justinians Flea, about the plague in Rome, and i hate to say but it was a bit dissapointing. Out of 320 pages, olny about 20 pages at best actually go into what day to day life was like during the plague
That's unfortunate re: your current read. I've definitely read books before that imply they'll be about one subject based on title/blurb but end up focusing on something slightly different - that's always annoying. I agree that some history books can be really, really dense. It makes finding a good one even better. Thanks for watching!

Sea Peoples was excellent. I didn't read The Storm Before the Storm, but something similar, Mortal Republic by Edward Watts which was very good.
