470 JL finally arrived today after waiting a year for it! It’s not a Gretsch copy. Like everything Collings is doing these days, it’s exceptional. I think it’s going to be a very versatile instrument. Pairs well with an acoustic. Will be a great single accompaniment guitar.
I'd love to see a demo of someone blasting some rockabilly with this guitar. After all, it is a Gretsch copy ... :--) This is the best demo yet, tho, by a long shot. Nice playing!
Does anyone else think the sound is beautifully vocal and airy but lacks body. That’s been my thought across a number of these videos. If you have JL’s tone in the fingers they can carry the sound sonically but my fingers probably can’t. Interested in your thoughts?
Think the same. But the same can easily be said of Gretsches with the single coil pickups that everyone loves with a little dirt. Which is why I'd love to hear this guitar played less delicately and through non-sterile sounding amp. The dynamics might work in its favor.
I once tried a Fodera bass like the one that Victor Wooten plays. It was so dynamic and responsive to my touch, that I felt intimidated. So I know what you mean, but I used to be unable to enjoy Telecasters because they were too bright and harsh, and now I love them. The Collings has a tone control, and I didn’t hear a lack of low end when Greg sought it out. I suspect that if I spent time with the JL, I could learn to use it, and be a better player for it. And there would be times when I wanted all of that sheen and brightness.
I think it has to do with it being a hollow body plus the bigsby. IMO the bigsby seems to make guitars sound a slightly thinner sonic quality that almost sound a little woozy. The 470 also seems to have this “breathiness” to its tone that reminds me of a semi hollow es style body. I can see how it may lack meat for some. I haven’t played it yet so idk for myself. Would love to see how it goes on a darker amp like a polytone.
I love the Vintage Gretsch as well - but this one is much more comfortable to play then any vintage Gretsch.... ! At the end it is an individual choice.
I appreciate Gretsch, but knowing Collings, this is probably both objectively better crafted, and better able to hold it’s value than any late-model Gretsch. I honestly don’t miss the mint ‘64 Country Gentleman that I owned (and bought for a song) in the early ‘70’s.

No, .... but my Uncle is very big in rice business - Ben is his Name! 🙂
Is Ben a convert?@@GregsGuitars
This costs over 6000 dollars... who pays this much for a Gretsch copy? For that kind of money you could buy a real vintage Duo Jet...

It has ron ellis pickup as default. These as humbuckers are priced 1000$ ish.
This guitar sounds like breathing. 👏
That was excellent. The best demo of this guitar that I have seen. Julian himself, never takes this guitar through it's full range of sounds.
