Thomas Punt Honesty. I feel like the Krusty Krab is meant to be a metaphor for Nickelodeon, with Spongebob and Squidward representing the cartoons that they air and the people that work on it while Mr. Krabs represents the people behind the network who are pulling the strings. Spongebob represents the people who don’t care that they have no free will and will always follow orders no matter what, while Squidward represents the people who are pissed about their lack of a free will when it comes to creations and only stay with them in order to keep their jobs. Then there’s Mr. Krabs, who is a monster who is in a league of his own. He abuses his employees and takes advantage of them any way he can and manipulated them and their properties giving them no free will of their own and only cares about money and will abuse the people close to them in order to get what they want. You see, Mr. Krabs is a lot like Glen Quagmire and Herbert the Pervert from Family Guy, as in they have a negative trait that defines their whole character. However, they represent how real people are and can be, just exaggerated for comedic purposes. However, unlike those two, who can be seen as “cute” and “funny” in their ways. Mr. Krabs is not like that. He is truly not only the worst character on Spongebob, but one of the worst characters in all of fiction, up there with Brian Griffin and APC Ren Howick. Now I know that in the pre-movie era some people will defend him for things like “Suds,” but even then there are still episodes like “Krabby Land” and “Jellyfish Hunter,” which show him off at his worst like in the Infamous “One Coarse Meal.” Say what you want about Patrick, but he’s like Peter Griffin. He doesn’t seem to know any better and believes he can do whatever the heck he wants with little to no consequences, because there is little to no consequences for anything that he does. Mr. Krabs is a terrible character and an even worse person. I hate Mr. Krabs, but the worst thing about him is that there are real people just like him.
Kamp Koral wouldn't be such a bad idea if it was just a _single episode._ Doing a spin off after someone's death is disgraceful and Nickelodeon is god awful for that.
More of a botching of hillenburg's property, Nickelodeon is making an uninspired spin off of hillenburg's most famous and beloved property, even though hillenburg would love for SpongeBob to end off on a good note, now that hillenburg is deceased in fact means they have full control of the IP, which also means they have the full rights to completely mishandle and misuse the property, Nickelodeon does not need to care about the now deceased creator of said property, SpongeBob belongs to Nickelodeon, and Nickelodeon needs to make money off the expensive and time consuming work of 2D animation.
@@lebozojamessimp1610 if that's the kind of answer you've got then that's lame. if anything really, it didn't have to exist since spongebob was fine on his own. point still stands but I'm less lenient bout it even though it should had been a very long episode or something stephen would be fine with if he was alive.
Misfited Misfit without a doubt, it's even more obvious they waited for him to die when you know how shady Nickelodeon is behind the scenes, with things like Dan Schneider and other scandals
When they announced a spinoff was in the works, a fan left a comment stating they wanted a Young Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy series. It could act as a parody of popular super hero shows such as the classic Batman animated series, with the twist of Spongebob humor. It would only need to borrow Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy from the original series, and the few of their villains introduced in the show, and could then flesh out a whole new set of characters. I would watch the shit out of that. It's pretty sad that the fans usually know how to make a good show better than the showrunners.
That would be interesting, since its canon there were other superheroes and they can flesh out the villains more, like expand on what Spongebob did, show them as villains but parody it so they also are human (fish? creature?) as well like going to get groceries or just out doing non-evil things
@@MrChaotic4 I remember, and I may not have bothered to see the SJW propaganda piece of shit remake. @@zzz43344 I can see them putting this show on Nick Jr. and it might be a way for them to avoid the controversy since the demographic would be younger.
NO. Hell, during the blowout when they were thanking Hillenburg, I was cynically thinking, "Yeah, thank you for letting us swim in your cremated ashes!"
@@eatatjoe Plus, I heard that there is a petition to cancel Kamp Koral but I don't think it'll go anywhere. Nick does what it wants and my guess, they'll likely air it on Nick Jr. because they want to target a younger demographic who likely doesn't know who Spongebob is and avoid pushback from the older audiences.
I used to dream about making a cartoon of my own with my characters that I enjoy, to turn my art into a passion project. Not anymore. Your points here were so accurate they hurt. But now I’m taking my ideas and turning them into a video game instead. It’s easier to manage, they’re my characters, and Nintendo and steam make indie development accessible enough that I can put my product out there. I’m not looking for profit, just creative expression done through my favorite art mediums.
Same, though I would like to animate my own series one day. Even if I just have to save up enough money from selling games etc so I can make my own animation with my own team on TH-cam. I’d rather be ripped apart bit by bit and die a terrible death than to have someone else who’s in charge fucking with my OWN creation.
@@mynameismaybeprobablynever5055 The pilot was intended as garbage, satire of modern cartoons. But Nickelodeon thought it needed to air and they removed the satire element from the pilot and just made garbage.
Cartoon Network did the same thing with the Powerpuff Girls reboot. They _lied_ and said Craig gave it his blessing when he most certainly did _not._ And he had to publicly say that on Twitter too.
@rhonda howard This honestly doesn't even surprise me anymore now. These once beloved kids' networks have made it very clear that all they care about now is making a profit, good quality animation be damned...
Samurai Jack and Rugrats remind us good revivals can exist. But you see, kids, there is just one thing to make a good revival. You know, it's not that hard. *_Make sure everyone comes back for it._* When you "revive" something, it means everyone returns. If there's a new showrunner, or barely any of the original people, that's called a "reboot" and you can't argue that. Even the voice actors for The Powerpuff Girls were in shambles, one of them in tears, over being replaced. It was not even a financial reason, they said they would have gladly returned to those roles, if I remember right. I love revivals when everyone, at least who are still alive, returns. It means I'm getting more content from a show I already loved, expecting it to mostly be identical and serve as a true continuation. A reboot makes me think "if you are going to change it this much, make a new show" that is always how I will think. New Teen Titans was the Teens Titans GO we all wanted, I'm sure nobody will disagree with me. That is how you could have done a good spin-off series. But, that's a different topic.
@Luke Jameson At least Family Guy was good for a while, until it became widescreen. SpongeBob SquarePants died after the first movie, which was intended to be the ending for it. They were already making them revive it, even though Derek Drymon did not return and Stephen Hillenburg only produced it for one more season, though he did eventually return to produce it again many years later until his death.
@@kieranstark7213 I remember when Nick released Planet Sheen. I never watched, but when I saw the trailer and all announcements, I already knew that show would suck.

They honored him with a marathon (plus "SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout" after they aired the episode, which I think it was made before his death in 2018, but produced in 2019 the same year), but now they decided to be selfish and make something so unforgivable of them.
I'd imagine the only reason they don't just chain Tom Kenny to a post and force him to work on Spongebob for the rest of his life for free is because it's illegal.
And the Louis Prima estate suing Disney when King Louie appeared in later works, Disney evading the lawsuit by demonstrating that they hired an impersonator

I hope everyone from the original Spongebob team refuses to work on Kamp Koral. Whether or not they do will show how much respect they had for Hillenburg.
@@Dachimotsu Scooby-Doo retained its original style ever since the beginning, though. Even Frank Welker will continue to be the only voice for Fred Jones (also the last veteran left from the original series) until he dies, but only because he enjoys it. Sure, they do make too many of them, but at least the formula is there. Go to the scene, solve the mystery and reveal the perpetrator. They never messed around with it too much or drastically modified it very often. Kamp Koral is breaking SpongeBob SquarePants history. It's entirely different.

@cart name The guy who worked on the show for its entire run and has worked with Hillenburg (I forget his name) has said that Stephen Hillenburg wouldn't want this. Just watch the video that has the title "Nickelodeon Waited for Hillenburg to Die" or something like that. I think that's the video that mentioned that. Like, the guy who's worked on the show for years I mentioned above stated on one of his social media posts that Hillenburg wouldn't have wanted this, and he literally knows Hillenburg after working with him for so many years.
I don’t think it’s gonna do well. Many kids are attracted to spongebob squarepants. It’s gonna be a planet sheen situation where it’s not going to do well.
I think Nickelodeon wanted creative control of ed edd n eddy, but he said no, which was why he went to cartoon network. I was thinking the same thing as you
Danny Antonucci has said that Ed Edd n Eddy was what it was because of executive pressure. Without executives telling him what to do, Antonucci spent most of the 1990s making shows like The Brothers Grunt.
I'm a fourteen year old kid who just finished writing a four page paper on how I want to become an animator and work at a studio like Nick or Disney, and make my own show. This video was terrifying. Not even joking. Either I don't get my ideas to the world at all, or I give up my ownership of them. We need some kind of alliance to protect these creative works or something.
Thirded...now I'm not going to bother pitching my ideas to networks and sign away the rights to my and my posse's characters to a network...instead I'll just post on Newgrounds or something like that....I'm 19 and I have a decent art style but I'm unsure if it could look good in motion
Ryan Rose To all of y’all in this comments section, I might have a plan that involves using TH-cam and Patreon. All finished projects would be posted in one channel, but will also be linked to all of your channels so that people know to follow your channels as well. I will use Patreon to utilize fanfunding until the channel gets on its feet. If anyone is interested in sending me your project ideas, I’d love to take a look
The alliance is something that would probably take forever to happen and get a lot of resistance in the industry. You'll probably have to do some more research on what goes on and try to find people that you can trust in there.
Remember the Krabby Land episode where Mr Krabs used Spongebob to hype up his ultimately vacuous “Krabby the Clown” routine before taking the money and running? Kamp Koral is Viacom’s ‘Krabby The Clown.’
This could easily be prevented if a few people just refused to do it. If Tom Kenny refused to do this show due to the disrespect of Stephen Hillenburg, I dont think it would get made.
Besides, Tom Kenny seems like the kinda guy who will do anything he can audition for. He talked about it in an interview, saying that he likes to keep various plates spinning.
Remember when Tom Kenny tried to produce a Plastic Man cartoon? Well if that cartoon failing to make it past a pilot is anything to go by, Tom Kenny doesn't really have much control.
Especially when big companies can outright ignore those laws to steal work from small artists. It's something that bugs me when copyrighter defenders claim stuff like piracy is stealing from creators. It doesn't. It just steals from the corporations. The creators have usually already been screwed over.
That's not a copyright issue though, it's just a bad practice. Copyright laws are good, and necessary, but when you sign the rights off to someone else, that's when these sorts of problems arise. Don't give the rights away, and you'll maintain the IP and the ability to protect it.
The cirumstances surrounding Making Fiends, Chalkzone, and My Life As A Teenage Robot *annoys* me to no end too. Chalkzone got shoved around timeslots (and this was BEFORE Spongebob became the ATM it is, too!) and then the back half of the season showed up on Nicktoons. Making Fiends' website still has some optimism attached to it and an "Oooh, it's on Nicktoons!" message and My Life As A Teenage Robot's only acknowledgement by Nick was on Thursday, where it was its birthday.
@Stix N' Stones Ancillary rights are an interesting thing that the entertainment industry doesn't like as a whole to be made public and it sucks no one knows about them.
Nickelodeon: "Hello, I like money!" Fans: "What inspired you to create a SpongeBob spinoff against Stephen Hillenburg's wishes, after he passed away?" Nickelodeon: "Money!"
SpongeBob became a meme phenomenon simply because people like it and the fact that so many memes have been made out of it shows how relatable SpongeBob can be to anything or anyone in life. SpongeBob's universe is that versatile. Kamp Koral is not gonna even come close to that.
Exactly! We got a Writers' Guild of America strike in 2007-2008. 20 years later, it should be the animators' turn. 2027-2028. It's happening, people! This video will hopefully be the start of it. September 24, 2020, 10:42pm
Hillenburg kind of implied he was in his late teens early 20s really is he said that SpongeBob was enough to be living on his own but is not an adult adult
I feel like the whole "they own a voice that Tom Kenny does" thing wouldn't actually hold up in court. Someone correct me if something similar has been upheld in a higher US court but that honestly sounds like horeshit. I totally believe he signed some contract at some point that *says* they own a voice he did, but contracts aren't magic papers that override federal or state law. Maybe the could argue a trademark. Maybe. Obviously they have trademark and copyright on the character of Spongebob and have copyright on specific performances of the voice Kenny was paid by them to perform, but I seriously doubt any judge would agree that they can compel Tom Kenny to not speak in a certain voice.
I don't think that's what Enter was implying. I hear SpongeBob's voice each time I listen to the Mayor from Power Puff Girls and the Professor from Spyro and Spyro himself from Ripto's rage. He's talking about Tom Kenny not being able to do the character impressions of SpongeBob outside of Nick especially something for profit not necessarily the voice itself.

Having young Sandy meet young SpongeBob at camp is an embarrassing failure at research that further shits on the man that created an IP that barely keeps Nickelodeon alive.
The show is going to bomb so bad. This is a total disrespect to Hillenburg's legacy. It's like Nickelodeon waited for him to die in order to make this new series.
Animators don’t get as much respect because in the eyes of corporate people, they see cartoons as products and for profit (obviously). Animation, to me, has always been a free form of expression and to abuse and repress the creative minds is disgusting and discouraging to anyone who wants to pursue a career in animation. I want to be an animator, but I do not want to be owned by a company/corporation who want to deface and defecate my animated characters and cartoons. Free lancing is probably the only way I can truly express myself and there are people who do free lance work to earn money and still keep their creative masterpieces. This is why you see many animation videos on TH-cam. Although the platform for animators on TH-cam has been less than pleasing, it is still a platform for animators to show their stuff and not be bound by the chains of greedy corporates. I respect animators to the highest degree and for the animators who have been treated unfairly, I say they deserve better. Nickelodeon doesn’t care about their staff and neither does CN or Disney. Animation has become a “joke” where its purpose is to make money. Quantity over quality as some may say. It’s a business practice that gets repetitive and toxic quick because for animators who work at one of those studios, they don’t have a choice. Animation deserves better because, as a medium, it has opened doors to the imagination and has went beyond the boundaries of imagination if that makes any sense.
Ageism is one of the toxic results from this mentality. One of the reasons Hollywood Executives embraced CGI was because they could pay the young talents a lot less whille forcing veterans(even those who work in CGI) to retire at younger ages. This is why you see many older animators and artists having to bag grocerys at wal mart to make endss meet.
At least Matt Groening created 'The Simpsons' just so he can keep his 'Life In Hell' characters. Though the show has already passed it's expiration date.
The Alolan Professor This highly reminds me of the video game industry, as it’s having similar stagnation as the animation industry. With every new game being produced by a corporation on a yearly basis with tons of microtransactions and cut content, with tons of trendchasing and pandering, it really sucks that when something gets popular, it gets corporate and it turns into a shell of its former self. Animation and video games used to have stigmas and other repression, but now that they went mainstream, they got incredibly corporate. I see video games as a free to express medium that’s being abused as well.
Unfortunately, all we can do is just do our best to forget that it exists. We all know that Nickelodeon isn't going to stop production no matter what words we throw at it. Just knowing that companies are perfectly willing to throw out all the rules you laid down for your creation just to keep milking it the minute you're gone, it's just another reason that I don't think I'll actually make a cartoon of my own.
@@Al-AmeenAdewunmi That's a bit different, though. The issue with the Sonic movie was that it was just a terrible design for the character. Japan actually seems to be the only place that actually respects animation, and one of their best studios was/is Kyoto Animation, which unfortunately had one of its studios burned down in an arson attack
They might respect the workers more, but the lack of regulation leads to LONG hours. The guys who did sausage party have nothing on the Japanese, which is a very sad statement.
There's a problem regarding work hours in general in Japan. Look up karoshi just as an example of what I'm talking about. Probably due to cultural reasons but it's still a problem nonetheless. Allegedly wage slavery is also an issue in the animation industry there specifically but it's typically related to the point above.
I'm still sad about Making Fiends still being owned by Nick so the creator can't even use those characters and that show won't even be able to continue. So much potential...
What's sad is the show is so charmingly odd yet simple is that these days the creator could probably animate it on her own through Adobe Flash and put it on TH-cam if Nickelodeon just gave back the rights to her. If I ever make a cartoon, I'll just do that. I don't care whether or not it makes any money. At least I could do what I want with it.
And what happened to Kyoto Animation, was a major BLOW to this industry. As you know, that animation studio treated it's staff like people, not tools like Viacom. That sends off a message that I have been saying again and again: "BIG BUSINESS, WE ONLY WANT BIG BUSINESS! There's no room for the little guys!"
I would not be surprised if the psycho arsonist was actually paid off by a slavedriving rival studio(s) to take down KyoAni for making their conditions look that much worse in comparison.
GaiaX5 I’m a bit shocked that more people in this comments section aren’t bringing up how tactful KyoAni is (was?) to its creators, almost as if they’re the Pixar of anime.
I kept scrolling through the comments just so I could find someone who was thinking about Kyoto too. I really hope that more humane studios like Kyoani are able to take rise, though I know it takes a lot more than just hope to make that stuff happen
I was mortified about this because my friend told me very casually one day about it and the phrasing did not make it seem like it was real. I just could not believe it. It almost makes you want to stop being alive, knowing life itself doesn't feel like it's generally respected anymore.
The only Spongebob “spin off” I would watch would be “Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy”. To bad their original voice actors are dead and it would be weird hearing anyone else do their voices (except when Adam West and Burt Ward in the time travel episode). RIP Stephen Hillenberg, Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway.
Dylan Lewis I know it would still screw up Stephen’s legacy but I think a cartoon about the original “Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy” would honestly be okay at least if they keep the old style like in that Sponegbob episode when they watched one episode from Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. One cartoon I actually want to see is a fish that comes to the future of Bikini Bottom.
The quality video game "bendy and the ink machine" is entirely based on the misery of animators behind such happy cartoon products. The whole game is so symbolic you have to look at a TH-cam video to understand it all.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily fromNarodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick and Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existencial catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Rick and Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. I think 2D animation can be used to potray different styles very well, check out projects like "Dante's Inferno: Animated Epic" or "Dead Space: Aftermath", where each circle of hell/character's perspective is animated in styles so different, you could think it's two separate shows. I agree that "Wreck it Ralph" benefits from it's style of animation, but in my opinion, rather than because 3D can potray different styles better, it is related more to the fact that video games are associated with detailed 3D these days.

I'm wondering how this compares to how Netflix treats animation because from what I hear, they pretty much treat their workers fairly and allows for more creative freedom, among other reasons, and seeing as how a lot of well known creators within the animation industry are going straight to Netflix, it shows that they care more than everyone else

Does SpongeBob really need a spin-off? I mean I wouldn’t mind if they gave a spin-off to a short-lived Nickelodeon show, but why the show that has 12 seasons to it?
@@JMiles-wl1nq one failed concept was Becky Prim, an animatic that I followed for several years until I realized the creator moved on. I freaking loved that video.
And we can already see this happen. Do you know/remember Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs? Tell me if this sounds familiar: After the success of their second movie, the creators decided to make an animated TV show prequel to the series in a whole new style and keeping the two main characters still around, but not their voice actors, and making them school students and to justify them not knowing each other in the first movie, they had a memory eraser be the answer. It lasted 2 seasons with incredibly negative reviews, with people pointing out it conflicts with the movie's lore badly nor does it try anything original.
Heres my own added thoughts: 1. clearly it's disrespecting Hillenburg's desires and it's sick that Nick decided to wait until he died to do this. 2. spongebob as a show where he isnt well defined in age meaning he can do much of anything, as the show has shown isnt gonna work being narrowed down to the same old tired cliche of summercamp. (Disney, Cartoon Network, Nick, etc have all milked any creative ideas out of it in my opinion but thats another whole thing). It's gonna just be another uncreative and lame summercamp show that is gonna try milking off the spongebob juggernaut. (meaning it's just yet Another Summercamp Show just with spongebob smacked over it). A show with a character formerly such as spongebob with it's range will not be able to hold in a such narrowed premise. But if we know enough from TTG, we know Nick will try to milk every ounce out of these spinoffs, even if EVERYONE seems to hate em, they'll likely try to flood the channel with it. (considering their animation side is kiiinda lacking lately since they keep axing everything) this has been my think piece, i would and could ramble on for ages longer but nah
Damn, man. Animation is truly my passion, too. This doesn’t deter me from working for my dream of developing my artistic style and animating for fun, but it’s a harsh reality check. I think you explored the corruption quite well here, though. Hillenburg, Hirsch, Greenblatt, McCracken, etc. all deserve their characters and their right to do what they please with them. It’s just...I’m not sure what to do now
Good on you taking the difficult highroad Mr. Enter by not subjugating your ideas to corrupt people. Shame though, maybe one day you'll be able to fund your animation yourself -- I'd hate to see corporate greed waste your unique ideas.
I don’t blame you. This spin off is very disrespectful to the wishes of Hillenburg not wanting one. And if you think about it, THEY WAITED FOR HIM TO DIE IN ORDER TO DO THIS. The executives of Nickelodeon sicken me.

But sadly, they discontinued Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy after both voice actors died so this couldn’t be a possibility.

The circumstances surrounding Making Fiends are just one of many, _many_ reasons why I utterly despise how copyright laws work.
Well, there's a devil named Disney who is trying to destroy the Public Domain, nobody knows why and then there's this.
Don’t know why Spongebob’s the Nickelodeon mascot, when Mr. Krabs would fit perfectly.
SpongeBob became a meme phenomenon simply because people like it and the fact that so many memes have been made out of it shows how relatable SpongeBob can be to anything or anyone in life. SpongeBob's universe is that versatile. Kamp Koral is not gonna even come close to that.
Animators should create a union, like actors and screenwriters
Exactly! We got a Writers' Guild of America strike in 2007-2008. 20 years later, it should be the animators' turn. 2027-2028. It's happening, people! This video will hopefully be the start of it. September 24, 2020, 10:42pm

If someone ever decides to open up the Fortnite dance lawsuit, we'll have an answer.
You can look up TH-cam videos of people getting Tom Kenny to do the voice at conventions so I don't really think it holds up lmao.
My research says that you cannot Copyright a character's voice, or even your own voice for that matter.
Normally I would agree that there's no way such a claim could hold up in court, but this is Viacom we're talking about.

The Alolan Professor you hit the nail on the head man
We need a revolution, a change in the landscape of entertainment industry oppressing executives.
_We need a raid_
How can Nick not hear Hillenburg rolling in his grave? How can they possibly think this is respectful of his work?

There's a problem regarding work hours in general in Japan. Look up karoshi just as an example of what I'm talking about. Probably due to cultural reasons but it's still a problem nonetheless.
Allegedly wage slavery is also an issue in the animation industry there specifically but it's typically related to the point above.

And adam west.
Adam West passed away as well! But I agree with you that a Mermaid and Barnacle Boy spin off would be a much better alternative
If it's all possible, then I can imagine Wally Wingert and Kirk Thornton as these two, sort of.
The quality video game "bendy and the ink machine" is entirely based on the misery of animators behind such happy cartoon products.
The whole game is so symbolic you have to look at a TH-cam video to understand it all.
This reminds me of the "you have to have a high IQ to enjoy rick and morty" copy pasta. No offense doesnt sound as smug
A show with a character formerly such as spongebob with it's range will not be able to hold in a such narrowed premise.
