Smashing...Live! is an orchestrated performance by the New Japan Philharmonic of fifteen rearranged tunes from the game Super Smash Bros. Melee on one disc. It was released in Japan in 2001, a month before the game's release. In 2003, it was given as a gift to subscribers of Nintendo Power and Official Nintendo Magazine. Original composition by Hirokazu Ando, Shogo Sakai and Tadashi Ikegami.

Yeah it was cool, but it came in a paper slip. Mine got torn up after a while and I just have the CD, which thankfully is still unscratched and still plays. I might print out a cd case for it.

My car recently got broken into and the jerks took all my cds including this beautiful CD I got with my nintendo power. I was feeling bummed that I might not ever hear this wonderful track again. I can't begin to express how good it feels to hear it again. Thank you so much. The 37:00 mark always make my eyes teary. I love hearing metroid music in orchestra.
I accidentally sold 2 vehicles that were full of 6 cd's in the radio each.
They guy that bought the truck sold it quick after putting a plow on it. He's still my customer a decade later.
41:23 An orchestral rendition of Flat Zone is something I did not know I needed in life. Even if it's just a small fragment amidst a big medley. I adore how they imitate the beepy background noises
Notice how much longer the Melee theme is in this orchestra, and how Brawl remix of Melee's theme even makes the Zelda/Kirby/Star Fox part of the song longer like this one. I think there is a full version of the Melee theme Nintendo is hiding from the world.
Fountain of dreams in a live orchestra sounds astonishing, impressive work.
Man the Depth of Brainstar is so chillin in the beginning.

Fountain of dreams has always been my favorite. The drama and intensity is so epic

And people said that game music wasn't sophisticated. I felt the urge to sway side to side listening to some of these songs. Always loved game music because the melody was specifically designed to set a mood, to convey a feeling to the listener. Thanks for sharing this jewel.

This is especially hilarious considering Hollyweird has lost all the sophistication that made its soundtracks so good and exchanged them for the beeps and boops of later day Hans Zimmer and Skrillex of all people. And WAY too many pop songs and needle drops. Bryan Tyler, for all his thoughts, agrees with me since he apparently had to fight to include as many classic Mario and Nintendo music in the Super Mario Bros movie as he did.

Listened to this CD so much as a kid that it got scratched and used to the point of being unplayable 20 years later. Would LOVE a physical re-release of this because it's one heck of a program!

I got this with a Nintendo magazine and it's one of the two CDs I own. We used to rinse listening to it in the car driving around everywhere! I listened to it so much that all I need to do now is remember the first few notes of the first song and I can recall the entire disc of music in order from memory.

I got this CD as a present from a student, along with a cardboard figure of Link from "A Link to the Past" for the GBA and a couple of Nintendo pencils. Then a friend´s friend saw the CD and asked me (almost begged) to sell it to him, which of course I didn't.
I listen to this music as often as I can.
I nearly cried during gourmet race/fountain of dreams, and not only during the soothing beginning either. What phenomenal musicians!
This is true Nintendo Power! So many incredible songs over the years. My favorite is of course Kirby Fountain of Dreams🌠

Oh my goooodddddd, this is a DREAM. And literally... Fountain of Dreams has been something I've wanted to hear fully orchestrated for a REALLY LONG TIME. I freakin' love this mix. I wish they had a longer suite for Zelda and SSB Melee music. So freakin' epic, UGHH. This is nostalgia, this is life, this is epic dreams manifest. I'm so glad I searched for SSB orchestral music and got something legit.

Never, EVER take this video down... such fantastic memories. Like other commenters I had this CD as a kid and played it to death. Shockingly enough, I became a professional violinist ;) can't wait to finally play some video game music in a symphony concert someday!
I was a subscriber for Nintendo power when I got this album. I still have the CD somewhere and I still have the music and listen to it from time to time on my iPod. Great that you uploaded it with the pics and time stamps.

Nintendo brings life to video games by orchestrating their music into what I assume, is their original vision all along.
What a fun trip down memory lane. Some of my fondest memories come from old video games. So many hours spent playing Smash Bros with my brothers and friends. Thank you, Nintendo.

I thought it was weird to see rainbow cruise as the last song and when I heard it… I don’t know it just brought it all together it almost felt like a theme for all the characters and the whimsy of it all and then the clapping I just… damn that was good
I can only imagine how amazing it must've felt to be in the audience and to join along in clapping.. I would've been so moved with emotions 😭
I could never read music as a kid, no matter how much I tried. I received this CD and ended up destroying it by constantly rewinding to learn how to play music by ear. Teachers didn't teach me how to play music. This CD, and video games in general, did. I would prop my Game Boy Advance on the sheet stand of my synthesizer and spend hours learning.

I played this CD so much I had to resurface it twice. I wasn't able to rip it at the time because we didn't have the tools for it, so I went without it from basically Senior Year until a few years ago when I realized someone had to have had ripped and uploaded it.

F ZERO - DECIDE IN THE EYES. Look up the “guitar arrange” full live band versions of the fzero x OSTon n64

Ikr. A lot of people aren't aware that videogame classical is a *huge HUUUUGE* thing, mostly in Japan, but there are more and more people trying to bring it to the US. Some of my top favorite orchestrations include this and Symphony of the Goddess. Their rendition of A Link Between Worlds and Gerudo Valley is just .... Ugh, sooo gooood.
But I do love me some Baroque music as well. That continues to inspire composers even to this day.

I was confused around 41:10 & onwards wondering what the heck the song was. Then Realized it was Game & Watch.

Everyone is sharing stories so I will too. My parents scrounged up the cash to buy me a trumpet for band. My brother and I got this CD and the trumpet solo that is part of the great medley with the jet blue level was so powerful it motivated me to play my heart out. I still have that trumpet and this old cd, scratched up though it may be.

As a kid I would listen all the time to many of these tracks at a Kirby fan site called rainbow cruise or something like that. I see now how this has definitely played it’s role in shaping me as a musician.

This has got to be the most clutch piece of s.w.a.g. I have ever received. But the one short coming I have with this is that there is no representation for Earthbound, not even in the medley. Ice climbers, Game and Watch, and F zero all get a little something. But since the level of quality afforded in this resubscription perk is MIND BLOWING, I guess it doesn't really matter.
I always thought that one kid coughing during the opening of the Fire Emblem piece was an a-hole. Still kinda do 16+ years later.
