  • This is a review / demonstration of the Yakima EasyTop, a solution for vehicles that don’t come with built in rails to attach a normal roof rack. We actually recommend this. It worked very well, it’s fairly easy to set up, it looks good, and it was very affordable. UPDATE 3/2023 -- SEE AN ADDITIONAL VIDEO CLIP IN THE COMMENTS TO LEARN ABOUT A POTENTIAL MODIFICATION.

    Thanks for posting. I just used my set for the first time, and I can tell you that you do not want to use them bad weather. I just drove 2 hours in a off and on downpour and water came in through the doors and soaked me and my interior.
    Other than that, they work great.

    Thank you so much for this video. I just bought these for our ski trip in a few weeks. The directions were not so helpful and getting a visual and suggestions makes me feel so much better!!

    This video in review is relatively helpful. I think it is glossing over how you secure the tightening strap called the “HD strap” which he has tied inside of the car, but the instructions tell you NOT to tie inside the car with it doubled back over and tighten it above the car. That HD strap I find the hardest as I have commented in another review to figure out and get right. The instructions that come with the product do not talk about threading the strap in between the skis, which is a very good suggestion, and an obvious improvement they could make to the instructions. Overall, the instructions are very poor, and they should include a lot more video to provide tips to expedite installation.

    unsure about skis but with kayaks the smaller strap connects to the D ring, it's not supposed to go thru the car. foam pads are attached to car via the wider straps, the load gets attached to the pads via the small straps attached to the D-ring I think.

    UPDATE: I found a way to fit four sets of skis on top. Here's a link to a video and description that explains how: th-cam.com/video/r0gnGwzFL5Q/w-d-xo.html

    Thank you for addressing the ski sandwich issue. I wonder if there's a way to install sandwiched skis on the rack such that one of the rear bindings is actually resting on top of the forward easytop pad. So the pad would sit right where your heel goes. Did you experiment with that?

      I *think* I understand what you’re asking, but I’m not sure that would work. You would really need to elevate the ski somehow if you had the bindings pointed down, at any location, to avoid scraping the top of your car.

    Do you think this would be feasible for securing long fishing poles (8-11 ft)? Haven't seen much on soft racks for this use so I'm curious. I live on the coast and we don't use poles that come apart for surf fishing so it's handy to have them ready to go.

      Yeah, I don’t think they were designed for that, but it would probably work as long as the reel doesn’t hang too low and come in contact with the roof. My other concern would be the side to side movement. Maybe you could use a decent zip tie to secure them to the straps, clip them off, and then bring a second set of zip ties to secure them for the way back.

    Have you had any issues with snow or water entering your car?

    • @bartbedsole8497
      @bartbedsole8497  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Are you referring to the straps creating a gap between the doors and the roof, and allowing water to enter through those gaps? Not that I know of. As far as I can tell, it seals up pretty tight, preventing any moisture from getting in between the door and roof.

      @@bartbedsole8497 yeah thats what I was referencing. I read reviews explaining not to use the roof rack during rainy weather

      Jess Chairez Yeah, I guess I haven’t used it in rain. Just snow for now.

      Great. I guess we have had it about 3 years. Used it for about 6 ski trips. No problems and everything is in good shape.

      Bart Bedsole hey, did the mount hold up driving on the highway? Say, 80mph?

      @@Username-em1oe Sure. We don’t drive 80 all that much, but certainly 70-75.
