As far as I'm aware, most of the modern persona games have at least one option like that. Fairly early on that you could only get with new game plus as a sort of introduction to the mechanic of locking dialogue choices behind social stats. It's kind of an interesting pseudo tutorial.

"I thought they were more visually novelly type games."
P4 and previous versions of P3 do have a strong visual novel feel for the life simulator part of the games.

I definitely feel it a bit in sections, still - but I also think I like those types of games more than I thought I did

14:10 The most common and newest cannon game is Matoko Yuki and is what his VA (also a TH-camr) along with trailers for this remake calls him
    Older canon names would be
    Minato Arisato in the manga
Roger during a trailer for the original game
And during the stage play each showing had its own new name

"i wonder if he just doesn't see [the blood and coffins] or...."
Some people seem to think he's kist that chill.
My preferred interpretation is that he's nearly emotionless at the start of the game. Either from trauma or for spoilery reasons.

"They said you could leave as soon as you regained consciousness."
Realistically, he'd be hooked up to an IV and a feeding tube. And he'd need physical therapy just to stand up.
But plot won't wait that long :)

"I'm guessing they need to kill themselves to make their persona come out, like a protection thing. Like that's the last resort. It'll only appear if they destroy themselves."
Close. And that'd _very_ insightful. Especially for someone unfamiliar with the games.
The acquisition method and summoning method is different in each game, reflecting each game's theme.
In P3, some people have s natural potential to summon their persona. It's most easily called in a life or death moment. The pistols are essentially realistic props, used to evoke that mental state.
P4 and P5 deal with some dark issues, but P3 is easily the darkest one. The game explores the various ways people cope with the deaths of others, and the prospect of their own, sometimes in a metaphorical sense, but often it's actual.

28:15 fun little bit of trivia: that student is voiced by Xander Mobus, who voiced the main character for Persona 5. When they reuse voice actors they usually try to give people who have had major parts, minor, bit, supporting roles or just one line cameos like that.

Don't know if you found it out yet, but bascially, the Evoker basically is used for them to "force" their Persona out, by making them face a fear of death everytime. Also, I would recommend playing the first two, or at least the PSP ports. Also speaking of, Persona 3 Portable has a female MC
