Zero Motorcycle - How to install a USB charging socket

- There are many options to upgrade your motorcycle by installing a 12vDC charger, USB plug, or any accessory type of charger. By having such an accessory installed you get to make use of the powerful motorcycle battery.

Very well done. I’ve done this to my 15 SR. I like your tip about using short and long screwdrivers for those 6 screws.

I just installed the stock 12v plug in my 2018 S that has the charge tank option. I ordered the plug from Zero, hoping it would make things smooth and easy. Unfortunately, on my bike there was only the SAE connector and the plug they sold me had the other one. I looked everywhere I could without taking the charger out, but it wasn't there. So I purchased a SAE extension wire from Lowes, cut the gray connector off, soddering on the proper connector in it's place I guess if I'd purchased my plug from a third party source I would have been better off!
One other note. With the charge controller in the way, it wasn't so easy to push the wire up along the existing wire harness. I had to use a string fed through from the tank side, tie and tape it to the connector and use it to pull the wire up through. Worked like a charm.
Very helpful. I have a 2016 Zero S with a power tank. The extra battery is secured in place by a bracket using two 10 mm nuts (use long socket). For the Allen screws I used size 3. For the torx bolts securing the seat I used size 45. Once the bracket for the power tank is removed you unplug the cable at the top of the battery and lift out the battery, which is heavy, to access the accessory plug. The local Zero Motorcycle dealership charges $100 for the install of the 12 volt accessory. I’m glad I did it myself. Thanks bro!
Nice job Jonathan! The process does take awhile if you have the power tank. But it is well worth it!
After reading your comment, I wonder if the additional connector was hidden under the charger on my 2016 S. As I wrote in my comment, I decided not to remove the charger, instead swapping the type of connector for one I purchased. Since I wasn't sure the other (non SAE) connector was under there, I thought it the best option.

That gunk you pull out in the beginning is meant to be there. It helps with the connection.
Indeed. Better to take some of that gunk and put it on the exposed pin.

sweet now i can connect to cig lighter for radar detector and tender-plug to usb down my motor cooling fan, my 2014 SR motor get hot on 99F*+ days

just found my answer on unofficial zero manual, Both plugs are fed power from the same 10-amp circuit.
Any advice on how to connect LED strip lights to an FXS? I can't find seem to find a video or good info. They normally end in a black and red wire connecting to the bikes battery.
Depends, I also looked into installing LED strips. From what I found you need a set of lights that has the right wiring. From there you can opt for splicing in the SAE connector to the end of the wiring. But it would cost you a bit more for your project. If that doesn't work try a work around, by installing a USB connector and purchasing a USB compatible light strip. I'm still on my project but that's the best I can offer for now.

great video! I have a question: is there a way to have the 12v socket working without the bike being turned on?
You would need a seperate battery pack to continuously charge the 12v socket. I bet if you connected a SAE connector to a USB battery pack that may be a workaround. But it is less than ideal.
I wish this could work too. I do a lot of camping and it would be great to use my Zero battery as a really big backup for my 12v refrigerator, etc. My idea, which I have not yet implemented, would be to insert a switch at the fuse box to turn off the headlight when the bike is in ready to ride mode. With the kickstand down I think this would be a fine option as the rest of the functions of the bike probably don't use much power and it won't allow you to knock it off the stand even if someone accidentally turns the throttle. Adding another battery does not sound like a solution to me. You might as well just use an external battery pack.

Note that this doesn't quite work for the Zero FX/FXS. There is no hole to mount it. You need the official kit to get the bracket which holds the plug.

@@alternativestandard3303 Yep, I ended up ordering the materials to make one and didn't notice it myself on my FXS until I was done! Oh well.

The usb comes with a cover. It is waterproof as long as you keep it on. Let exposed and your in for some trouble.
How do you install this when there is a charge tank in the place?
You may still find the SAE 12v connector behind the charge tank. Instead of removing the charge tank try looking for it from the front. It might be easier to find i that way.
I found the SAE connector along side my charge tank, but not the other style connector. I have a 2018 so perhaps they stopped providing both connectors? Or the other was hidden under the charger. I used the SAE so I'll never know for sure.
