  • Bob Haro is the Father of Freestyle BMX and the founder of Haro Bikes and Harodesign. Bob grew up in Southern California riding motocross and skateboarding. When he ran out of money to continue racing dirt bikes he turned to BMX. Drawing was Bob's first passion and started illustrating for BMX magazines and brands. He became the staff artists for BMX Action Magazine. At 18 he started his own business, manufacturing BMX Plates and selling tens of thousands in the process.
Bob was racing BMX and riding skateparks at night which became the birth of Freestyle. Parks were starting to close down so he was building his own ramps. They would take their ramps on the road doing Freestyle demo shows across the US and then worldwide.
Bob designed the first frame and fork for freestyle BMX. Then partnered with Torker to build the first freestyle bike called the Freestyler and Haro Bikes was launched. Haro Bikes grew rapidly turning over 7 million before Bob got an offer to sell it. He took the offer and started Harodesigns in 1993, a brand and marketing company for the action sports and motorsports industries. Bob went on to design the 2008 and 2012 US Olympics BMX Team kit and continues to be an instrumental figure in the BMX world.
Tune in to find out how Bob mixed his love of design with BMX, starting businesses, touring the world on his bike, the boom of Freestyle, BMX in the Olympics and loads more!

What the American dream is all about. Some, like Bob, make it come true 👍.

I'm going to get some low density polyethylene and make some plates for my Redlines. It's the details I been wanting to add to complete the look. Video's of 2 of my bikes on my TH-cam channel.

Great interview. Thanks. Interesting to get a full picture of how it all evolved. I used to ride here in the UK in those days and the haro freestyler was the bike to have. He came to Harrow skate park and I managed to get his autograph. What a day and it blew my mind. Great days and glad I was there. Wish this interview had more views. Thank you again.

@@RadSeason I'm surprised at the view count... Well, we kids are all in our 50's now, as Bob said. I'm 53 & back on my BmX. This is a classic Bob Haro trick I managed to video last week th-cam.com/video/MDf6ohTC9wo/w-d-xo.html

I use to ride once in a while in Spring Valley, which is east San Diego county, with a guy named James Monaghan...I hope I spelled it right. He got a new bike...a Redline that, as the story goes, Bob Haro bought for him. I remember those days. Riding around the neighboring communities looking for jumps or bike shops to drool over the Redline Flight 401 cranks on display(I eventually went Profile cranks and I would do it differently if given the choice again). I remember Tony Murray before he became the flyer he became. I'm still into bikes. Just made me a bike to commute to work on. But watching this...I'm going to make a side hack! I haven't seen one of these in years!

When I was a kid, and even a teen everyone that I knew herein NYC (Including myself) thought that California was “The place to be”. It’s a shame how things change so much.🤯
