Great test! Please realize that Bakker Bart does not really make the products traditionally. The general opinion is that it has an average baking level. The price-product ratio is good, but for better products you really have to go to the artisan baker who bakes the products themselves.
I agree, BB is the "quick fix" when you travel or are having a "shopping day" and sit down for a quick coffee and croissant. Slightly above supermarket bread and pastry but nothing special. When they first started out they were a lot better but once they grew bigger it went down quickly.
I am in the lucky circumstance to live in the countryside of The Netherlands where you can still find bakeries that are in the family for more than a 100 years, so is the bakery in our village, and I would NEVER go to a chain or supermarket for breads, cake and pastries, the high standard and quality of these old school bakeries is simply unbeatable! Thumbs up!!
The town I come from has 1 bakery, now that I live in Groningen I only get to choose from 2 bakker bart's or about 20 other bakeries plenty of which have also been in the family for generations
Ofcourse there are old school bakeries in the cities as well, but they are much rarer because of the big chains and supermarkets, while here in Groningen for instance it is much more common in the villages simply because there are NO supermarkets! And talking about Amsterdam, been there a lot (my wife is from Amsterdam), had cakes, pastries and bread there ALSO from old school bakeries, trust me, they can ALSO not beat the quality from the bakeries here! BTW, the same thing with meat from the butcher, vegetables, etc...etc...@@really7187
I was never impressed with Bakker Bart. It honestly surprises me how they became so popular. There are much better alternatives, usually privately owned bakeries.

@@buncharted You really did, I want you to know you're responsible for me ordering from Bakker Bart tomorrow. At least I now also have a good idea of what to avoid : D
My Bakker Bart has seating inside which usually means they also make fresh sandwiches with those Bartjes you can eat there. A fresh Latte Macchiato (one free refill by the way) and a "Bartje warme omelet" with all the toppings is my favorite.
For something good try a Krentenwegge with cinnamon sugar from a bakery in Ootmarsum. Denekamp, Oldenzaal and Ootmarsum are nice for a weekend visit combined with Enschede. If you have more days, cross the border and visit the Castle in Bad Bentheim. Münster Germany is worth a visit.
For the knabbelstengel its highly recommended to get it really Fresh, or put it into an oven. You're kitchen will smell like cinamon and it'll be much better

The savoury snacks at the end (worstenbroodjes, saucijzenbroodje) pair really well with curry ketchup. This is likely also the sauce in the frikandelbroodje. My favourite is the original "hela kruidenketchup". It's in a red bottle, with a yellow kabel. It will also make worstenbroodjes less dry.
only on Supermarkt Worstenbroodjes Hela Curry is a go to, good Bakery Worstenbroodjes dont need sauce because they are buttery and moist on the inside.
ok so the chocolate croissant is actually what we in Belgium call chocoladebroodje. its meant to be easy breakfast, liks a sandwich withchocolate paste. I think the local bakery is always better than bakker bart! Its like dining at Wendy's ...

The sandwiches at Bakker Bart are quite nice I think, at least if the bread is fresh from the oven. But then again, it's quite diffucult to mess up a sandwicht 😅
You are right! HEMA tompouces are the best. Also from local bakery sometimes. (Never! from a supermarket) When you tilt them, you can easely eat them with a fork.
As a Dutch person, I agree. That aint a Tom-Pouce. But every Bakker-Bart sells local stuff so yeah no wonder you can't get everything at certain Bakker-Bart shops.
Very true, but that's with most Tompouces nowadays compared to the original ones back in the day, the whatever cream they use now is nothing compared to the ones with the bakkersroom, those are so good!
Honestly, the chocolade croissant isn't technically sold as a croissant but as a broodje, in the same category as the koffiebroodje. It's not supposed to be as flaky as the normal croissants.
there are only 150 bakkerij bart's in the netherlands? never knew that thought they had way more. in my village alone we have 2 of them. why? i dont know because my village is not that big
Koffiebroodje or koffiekoeken has been a "classic" for many years. Used to be a favorite of my father in the 1970s. We used to call them "plakkoeken" (sticky coockies?). They used to have some soft icing on top, which made the entire thing very sticky. Always has been too sweet for me, but maybe without the icing I could enjoy it.
Bavarois has a specific taste you "have to learn to appreciate" (as my mother would say). It's also not for me. We have a Bakker Bart shop in our neighborhood but never go there. We have also an artisan bakery just a little further away and we rather go there for bread and pastries. It may be a bit more expensive, but it's worth it!
I live in The Netherlands and have never been in a Bakker Bart. I wouldn’t know where to find one and after your review I don’t think I want to know 😊😊😊
Great video! I would recommend smaller bakery’s over bakker Bart. They have gone a bit corporate and you can notice that in how certain corners are being cut like less cheese in the ham/cheese croissants and little things like that , so just a bit less good for the same price , more consistent than any random small bakery
Up till today I had never heard of Bakker Bart. For real good quality always buy your products at a local bakery/pastry shop but not at supermarket or a chain.

If you buy an appelflap, it’s so much nicer if you put it in the oven first! A warm appelflap😋 and if u put a stroopwafel in the microwave for 10?? Seconds i think it’s amazing ;)
Great video! Have you ever tried droge worst (dried raw sausage, dried in a salt bath)? It is really popular here in the North! Friesland, Drenthe (my home hometown of Assen) and Groningen all have different variants!
Good video. I would eat most of those (despite not being a huge fan of Bakker Bart). But honestly, when I'm feeling homesick, I just heat up some Chocomel and dip stroopwafel and/or speculaas.
Frikandel is made from separator vlees, worstenbrood and saucijzenbrood are made with actual minced beef/pork. 2 of those sre made with PUFFPASTRY, the other one is bread.
You two should try a “palingbroodje”. It is a broodje filled with a piece of eel. And remember to eat it from the side not the small end because the eel is with bones still in it. I used to buy those in Zierikzee. Ciao
The only thing at Bakker Bart I really really loved were the thin baguettes they used to make. They always sold out quickly. Don’t know if they still make them
The strength of Bakker Bart is that it's a lunchroom/broodjeszaak combined with a bakery, as opposed to a tearoom or a pastry baker with a sitting corner, or a hapjeszaak (any kind of snackbar). They're pretty close to fast food. It's a place to rest your feet and your shopping bag and get some food inya. Pastry is never referred to as 'snacks' in Dutch, because snack (Du.: snakken -> to take greedy bites/mouthfuls) infers a certain hastiness. Tearooms and pastry bakers are places to relax and compose yourself (tot jezelf komen) while enjoying a nice cuppa and sweets (zoetigheden). They're a little more posh/gentrified, but don't let that fool you. Just wear clean clothes and they'll take your money. The more down to earth version would be called theehuis, but the new ones often appear in gentrified parts of the town, and can be hideously expensive, more so than a traditional chique tearoom in old town. If you've visited Den Haag, you may have noticed small stone buildings with a lot of glass on one side, usually on the off side of the road. These are the old koffiehuisjes, where werkmannen (small contractors) used their lunch. They sold straight koffie and maybe (!) a few hapjes like koek, cake or hardboiled eggs. You were supposed to bring your own sandwiches. The last one I saw operational sold broodjes haring.
Difference between Cupcakes and Muffins: Cupcake doesn't rise above the baking paper cup. Muffins bulge above and over the side of that same paper cup.
To be clear, the pastry where there was a little chocolate in there that you guys called a croissant is actually called a pain au chocolat. It's a French breakfast pastry, just like the other pastry you guys tried with raisons and custard in it. That's called a pain au raison. Because these pastries became popular and are so awesome, The Netherlands decided to sell them too
And the winner......frikandel broodje.....the one whit Al the restprodukt of a slaughter house mixed to a grey meat substance 😂😂😂AND ITS ANAZING❤❤❤,my favourite bakker Bart one is a cornbread whit chicken salad ❤❤❤and for sweet mokkacreme gebak
Choosing one per category: triangle broodje (make it with cream cheese and smoked salmon at home), the blueberry muffin and the saucijzenbroodje broodje. For a really good worstenbroodje or krentenbol you best go to an artisan bakery
I don't even remember what bavarois (pronounced "boff her wah") tastes like to be honest, but I remember liking kwarktaart a whole lot better. I like it better than cheese cake even. Not sure if it's sold everywhere in the Netherlands, but easy to get in local Limburg bakeries. Where you can also taste some delicious vlaai!
My mom and I for lunch like a volkoren Bartje gezond with everything on it for lunch. They make for you and you need something to drink with it. It's a hartige lunch. Or spicy chicken on it is delicious 😅😅
Suggestion Go to: - Giethoorn (and rent a boat) - Kinderdijk - Bourtange - Keringhuis| - Ommen (cycle through the woods) I got some great walks or routes you can do there
Great video! You should also try "boterkoek", it is very tasteful and delicious. And try also a "Moorkop" (I don't know if it is allowed to call it a "Moorkop" now-a-days) . It is almost the same as a Bosse Bol, but less chocolate on it.
As a dutch person, i eat a tompouse as following. Remove and eat the top with the pink stuff. Scoop out and eat the cream but leave a little on the bottom piece. Eat the bottom. It gets really messy otherwise.
Chocoladebroodjes are not what they used to be. If you got one of those in the 90s from a good bakery they would be filled with banketbakkers room not only the chocolate strips like the current variety. (eg the yellow pudding you find in a high quality 'Tompoes' or in a 'Pudding Broodje')
The prices feel expensive for the quality of the offerings, but I do want to try that Mexicano now, because finding spice sausage feel like a chore here.
I see you're from Dordrecht as well. Go to pastry bakery Brokking at the other side of the train station and Weizigt park to find it and buy a 'Brokking Hazelnoot slagroom gebakje'. This bakery is quite famous for this one.
When there was a Bakker Bart near my work (they were gone a year later though), I used to go there sometimes for one of their baguettes. Especially the tuna one. I never went for their pastry or sweet stuff though, but do they still do the baguettes?
I personally like to eat breakfast at Bakker Bart. I then opt for a large breakfast with old cheese and butter on the brown bread roll. No jam but butter on the croussant. Nice cup of coffee and a bottle of squeezed orange. You won't get this quality anywhere for this price.
I wonder what you would think of the Stroopwafels on the Markt at Vredenburg in Utrecht. They are by far the best I've eaten so far and not even comparable to prefabs. I haven't been there in a while so I don't know if they are still there but I can't imagine they wouldn't be.
what you called a chocolade croissant was actually a chocolade broodje. wich usually has more chocolade btw. there are actual chocolate croissants wich are just croissants with chocolate inside.
Sausijzenbroodje is much older and more traditional than the frikandelbroodje, which came up in the last few decades. Also the sausijzenbroodje, like the worstenbroodje contains pork meat and the frikandel is mostly chicken.
In the video you only ate the points of the appelflap whoch is allways the worst. Did you try the middle section as well? The filling pastry ratio should be much better there. Also I used to make appelflappen at home with the kids. Its easy and fun to do.
we went back a few times on the appelflap! it was just edited out since i figured y'all wouldn't want to watch us take a bunch of bites of something, haha
I don't know why i found it so funny but i had to pause the video with the Boeing Dreamliner comparison because i was laughing so hard. Also the little innuendos make me giggle. As for why one would choose a saucijzenbroodje over a frikandelbroodje, unfortunately not all frikandellen are made equally and therefor not all of them are as pleasant, to eat.
Agree with the appelflap ratio being weird. I always felt there is not enough filling with Appelflappen nor with the appel/banaan beignets. You get more dough with sugar instead of the nice goey sweet inside. I'm bit of an Rozijnbol aficionado. My guilty pleasure and comes in many varieties. Especially with a little bit of lemon or orange zest on the outside for a subtle additional flavor. Only thing I miss on your try-out is the Roomboter Broodje :D With a lot of those treats its really hit or miss depending on where you get it.
To be fair the few times I visit bakker bart it will be because of a sandwich, most of the time half stokbroodje filet americain with egg. I will say though and i'm not sure bakker bart has them, but I kinda assume they do, when I have to pick something in the range of sauzijzen broodje/frikandel broodje/mexicano broodje the sateh broodje is always my go to.
I never went through all of the BB products, it's a chain so by definition almost all the products lack attention. Some of their breads are great for lunch but the 'special' products are great for the eye but less favorabel for the taste. By the way I love the way you rate things by the amount of stroopwafels (but did you actually taste the truly fresh ones on a market?). I prefer to go go to a a "warme bakker' for fresh products so maybe you want to compare them on craftsmanship. Love your video's!
As a Dutchie watching expats what I should or should not get from bakker Bart, haha. Could you also do all the items from the 'fresh'/bakery section of the AH to Go? Could be fun!
The thing with Bakker Bart is that it serves people in the high streets, exhausted and hangry in the midst or just after shopping. It's kinda cheap, you get a lot of butter and fat in, so it does the job. But I think nobody would consider it an actual bakery; because of the high rent in the city centers, they hardly have any competition anymore from the oldfashioned bakeries. They're just not around so people splash on Bakker Bart as the quick and easy option. 🤷🏽♂️😅 By the way: putting cheese on a mueslibol is a real 'Limburgian'-thing to do. Even better if you put stroop on top! That is, the real one from Schinnen: Canisius. 🙃👍🏻
Shouldn’t really do this but have you ever visited a shop named Koekela it’s located on the Nieuwe Binnenweg in Rotterdam, specialised in pastries, brownies etc. If you decide to try it out walk a little bit further and get some bread at the Vlaams Broodhuis or Jordy’s bakery.
That was a fun test of a food variety at a bakery branch, which products are mostly from a factory bakery. And a test with a pretty high calorie boost for yourselfs 🫣 We do prefer the local artisan bakery. Honest pure products, less preservatives, locally produced and very tasty 😋 The original French 🇫🇷 croissant 🥐 and chocolatine (pain au chocolat) are artisanal products that are prepared in a classic and time consuming way. Resulting in delicious fine taste at a higher price 😊 Incomparable with and completely different as these cheaper products made in a factory.
Great test! Please realize that Bakker Bart does not really make the products traditionally. The general opinion is that it has an average baking level. The price-product ratio is good, but for better products you really have to go to the artisan baker who bakes the products themselves.

Frikandelbroodje FTW! Needs to be warm though :)
Don’t know if they still make them
You should really try their sandwiches. They are very good. I like the 'broodje gezond' and the 'broodje pittige kip'. :)
For me to get something to eat, Bakker Bart would be on the bottom of my list.
You should try Bakker van Maanen! Their chocolate chip cookies and gevulde koeken are amazing!!
Difference between Cupcakes and Muffins:
Cupcake doesn't rise above the baking paper cup.
Because these pastries became popular and are so awesome, The Netherlands decided to sell them too
bakker bart's menu calls it a "chocoladecroissant" though!
An actual chocolade croissant is a dangerous species. The molten chocolate can burn your mouth.
For a really good worstenbroodje or krentenbol you best go to an artisan bakery
i love your love for our snacks
As a manchild, I approve of the gratuitous amount of innuendo. Buncharted After Dark. 🤭
Also, Gudetama!
Suggestion Go to:
- Giethoorn (and rent a boat)
- Kinderdijk
- Bourtange
- Keringhuis|
- Ommen (cycle through the woods) I got some great walks or routes you can do there
it's my first time hearing about some of these - thanks for the tips!
Great video! You should also try "boterkoek", it is very tasteful and delicious. And try also a "Moorkop" (I don't know if it is allowed to call it a "Moorkop" now-a-days) . It is almost the same as a Bosse Bol, but less chocolate on it.
I forgot to mention that a Moorkop has on top a little bit of whipped cream.
As a dutch person, i eat a tompouse as following. Remove and eat the top with the pink stuff. Scoop out and eat the cream but leave a little on the bottom piece. Eat the bottom. It gets really messy otherwise.
Het is geen Buncharted video, zonder de nodige innuedo's 😂
this one has a LOT of them 😂😂😂
in-YOU-endo
Chocoladebroodjes are not what they used to be. If you got one of those in the 90s from a good bakery they would be filled with banketbakkers room not only the chocolate strips like the current variety. (eg the yellow pudding you find in a high quality 'Tompoes' or in a 'Pudding Broodje')
You figured out how to eat a tompouce properly, great vid.😉
you should definitely try the krentenbol with butter or margine spread thru the middle
The prices feel expensive for the quality of the offerings, but I do want to try that Mexicano now, because finding spice sausage feel like a chore here.
you can get it at most snack shops in the netherlands. it’s pretty tasty!
Sauzijsbroodje pairs the best wit a bit of Ketchup or Chilisauce
I see you're from Dordrecht as well. Go to pastry bakery Brokking at the other side of the train station and Weizigt park to find it and buy a 'Brokking Hazelnoot slagroom gebakje'. This bakery is quite famous for this one.
we try it in our dordrecht vlog :)
You are so funny, thanks for bringing a smile on my face
When there was a Bakker Bart near my work (they were gone a year later though), I used to go there sometimes for one of their baguettes. Especially the tuna one. I never went for their pastry or sweet stuff though, but do they still do the baguettes?
they do! and tbh they look kinda good
I personally like to eat breakfast at Bakker Bart. I then opt for a large breakfast with old cheese and butter on the brown bread roll. No jam but butter on the croussant. Nice cup of coffee and a bottle of squeezed orange. You won't get this quality anywhere for this price.
I like the frozen mini-tompouces.
I wonder what you would think of the Stroopwafels on the Markt at Vredenburg in Utrecht. They are by far the best I've eaten so far and not even comparable to prefabs. I haven't been there in a while so I don't know if they are still there but I can't imagine they wouldn't be.
i think any freshly made stroopwafel is pretty amazing. the best we’ve had so far are the ones from our gouda video - they were incredible!
what you called a chocolade croissant was actually a chocolade broodje. wich usually has more chocolade btw. there are actual chocolate croissants wich are just croissants with chocolate inside.
bakker bart calls it a chocolade croissant 🤷
Sausijzenbroodje is much older and more traditional than the frikandelbroodje, which came up in the last few decades. Also the sausijzenbroodje, like the worstenbroodje contains pork meat and the frikandel is mostly chicken.
The salmon sandwich by Bakker Bart is the best.
I have lived above a Bakker Bart for eleven years, smack in the middle of town, my bedroom window was near the chimney! Which was mostly glorious!
mmmm fresh bread wafting in every morning :)
it was in Den Bosch #Bosschebollen
you are lucky it was not the one in Deventer.... that burned down.
what a small world , I did actually live in Deventer for 7 years in the 80s #Old haha
AS expat, when I come back to the Netherlands, I always eat koffiebroodje, and drop of course. Maybe a pudding broodje is missing?
I don't know why i found it so funny but i had to pause the video with the Boeing Dreamliner comparison because i was laughing so hard. Also the little innuendos make me giggle. As for why one would choose a saucijzenbroodje over a frikandelbroodje, unfortunately not all frikandellen are made equally and therefor not all of them are as pleasant, to eat.
Try bakkerij t stoepje its also a “chain” but on the market.
Same sort of food like bakkerij Bart
Agree with the appelflap ratio being weird. I always felt there is not enough filling with Appelflappen nor with the appel/banaan beignets. You get more dough with sugar instead of the nice goey sweet inside.
I'm bit of an Rozijnbol aficionado. My guilty pleasure and comes in many varieties. Especially with a little bit of lemon or orange zest on the outside for a subtle additional flavor.
Only thing I miss on your try-out is the Roomboter Broodje :D
With a lot of those treats its really hit or miss depending on where you get it.
Love your video's!
whenever we treat ourselves to a stroopwafel it’s always a fresh one from our local market 🤤
As a Dutchie watching expats what I should or should not get from bakker Bart, haha.
Could you also do all the items from the 'fresh'/bakery section of the AH to Go? Could be fun!
that is a good idea 😄
The thing with Bakker Bart is that it serves people in the high streets, exhausted and hangry in the midst or just after shopping. It's kinda cheap, you get a lot of butter and fat in, so it does the job. But I think nobody would consider it an actual bakery; because of the high rent in the city centers, they hardly have any competition anymore from the oldfashioned bakeries. They're just not around so people splash on Bakker Bart as the quick and easy option. 🤷🏽♂️😅
By the way: putting cheese on a mueslibol is a real 'Limburgian'-thing to do. Even better if you put stroop on top! That is, the real one from Schinnen: Canisius. 🙃👍🏻
For great cake you need to go to De Drie Graefjes in Amsterdam ❤
Try the krentenbol with peanut butter. Or if you're more adventurous; with leverpaté. Great flavor combo.
Tongeworst my favourite on krentenbrood, or Eru goudkuipje. Soft boiled egg also good, but I prefer Stollen with that
Or even better: with Kalles Kaviar from Sweden!
Shouldn’t really do this but have you ever visited a shop named Koekela it’s located on the Nieuwe Binnenweg in Rotterdam, specialised in pastries, brownies etc. If you decide to try it out walk a little bit further and get some bread at the Vlaams Broodhuis or Jordy’s bakery.
we haven't been to koekela, but we love jordy's bakery (and koffiebar namaste)
That was a fun test of a food variety at a bakery branch, which products are mostly from a factory bakery.
And a test with a pretty high calorie boost for yourselfs 🫣
We do prefer the local artisan bakery. Honest pure products, less preservatives, locally produced and very tasty 😋
The original French 🇫🇷 croissant 🥐 and chocolatine (pain au chocolat) are artisanal products that are prepared in a classic and time consuming way. Resulting in delicious fine taste at a higher price 😊
Incomparable with and completely different as these cheaper products made in a factory.
