You can use wood in a forge like that if you want. It is not optimal but it does work. Where I live I have access to wood but I am limited on money. Depending on your standards charcoal is not to difficult to make. I make a little in a pit by burning wood to coals and covering it with a piece of tin and sealing it with dirt.
I use charcoal in my brake drum forge. I’d like to use coal but can’t buy it locally and my homemade charcoal works great. I couldn’t see myself using a gas forge because tending to the crackling fire is half the joy in blacksmithing for me.
@@RayFromTheHayclan It’s quite easy to do with TURBOLANDRAIDER’s double 55 gallon drum method. I extinguish the fire as soon as the coals reach the air holes and always get a full yield without any ash. Making it myself has probably saved hundreds of dollars already.
@@Ricoliets They're not pure wood / charcoal, they're made of sawdust and a binder to hold them together. They're designed to burn slower and at a lower temperature. Briquettes also leave a lot more ash, which clogs up your forge.
there's something more authentic feeling about using charcoal rather than gas
Great video!👍🏼

I'm considering that idea.

Thank you. I really enjoy using it.

Do charcoal briquettes work
No, you want lump charcoal
@@Danger_Momentum thanks man I found out my forge is coming along good 🤝
@@Danger_Momentum May I ask, why won't charcoal briquettes work? They won't get hot enough?
