    Beppe Grillo is one of the most prominent figures in the Italian political scene, having co-founded the populist Five Star Movement, now Italy’s largest party. He began his journey as a political commentator and satirist in 1980s, when criticism of the Italian national government forced him into effective exile from television. However, his influence did not waver, and Grillo is now one of the most widely read bloggers in the world.
    ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

      I agree. Grillo was terribly irrespectful of this young and talented interpreter's job. What an irritating and self-important behaviour from a mature showman, acting as if the translation were a marginal appendage you could do without instead of the essential bridge between two cultures and ways of thinking it actually is! Only people who don't master any language apart from their own (if ever) can show such a disregard for the entire process, its rythm and its rules. Still, I'm not surprised: the narrow-mindeness of his approach to politics and global issues is well-kwon, here in Italy...

    The reason why sections ( almost all ) of the speech and Q&A has not being translated is not that the student trying to translate is not a professional translator, but that Grillo has not enough common sense to undertstand that if he wants to communicate he needs to let the translator translate. I'm Italian and I'm sorry that here, in the UK, a lot of people still have blinders and reasons in an "ideological" way. Many students had an ideological prejudice without any basis. They also allowed themselves to judge others, who do not think like them, in a rude and disrespectful way. Giving titles as "fascist" or "populist" without any reason and speaking as "people who feel superior" in a school like this, then I understand the low level at which the teaching has arrived today. Shame.

The M5S is worth NOTHING, they tried to buy consent by giving free money to people, espeially in the South where they have, used to have, a stroghold. Let me also add,but this is a personal thought due not only to this particular video but also to my 16 years around the world,that beside the guy who is translating mister Grillo in this video,who is great,and few other exeptions i've encountered because of my profession,italians speak the worst english ever when it comes about the speaking part.. even after years of using this language (and other languages too,unfortunately),they can't loose the strong italian accent that makes it often difficult to understand what they are saying and that takes away from there professionalism,somewhat..

    Wow where to start. I remember when Beppe Grillo got involved in politics and was a left-wing populist leader during the times of Berlusconi and launching the Five Star Movement. And there are many things about Five Star I like, the idea of direct democracy, socialist reforms like universal basic income, and environmental policies for climate change, and an anti-imperialist foreign policy and other poliices they'd like to do if leaving the EU like major nationalization. But them getting in bed with the League, their xenophobia, even their partnerships with UKIP and after watching Beppe in this rambling bullshit about anti-vax, and his complete disregard for answering questions and not caring if it was translated well even interrupting the translator this is not the populist leader we need and shame what's become of him and I guess Five Stars to if they continue in this direction.

      I'm afraid the problems in Rome definitely started before Grillo.
      It was how Virginia Raggi (Five Star) came to be their mayor (promising to clean up the streets and giving hope to the left-behind in the city).
      Administrative problems and I think corruption/fraud scandals followed with her staff. I recall it being said that she'd been too trusting.
      So no progress has been made, at least from what I've heard. But it wasn't the start of the decline.

    • @gabrieleleone1487
      @gabrieleleone1487 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      How do you make the Rome-Grillo juxtaposition?
      Rome even without a mayor of the Five Stars Movement, would have had the same problems it has now.
      I hope you are joking.
      The manipulation of the Media does not allow you to reason with objectivity.
      Grillo errs the ways, but it is undeniable that before him Italy was under hypnosis, asleep.
      The growth of the Movement was born before the powerful dissemination of information by Social Media.
      The consent to the Movement has grown thanks to the contents through posts on Grillo's Blog and videos on TH-cam.
      Grillo denounces the atrocious Italians since the beginning of the 90s.
      When everyone was hypnotized by the stupidity and sexuality of Berlusconi's channels.
      Why do not you admit it, except for someone, that until recently we were a people without any ethics, morality and sense of responsibility?
      On TV and in the newspapers we saw Berlusconi's always smiling face and a fake political opposition.
      Fortunately we will not be back in those days.

    Quel "Voi che ve ne siete andati" rivolto agli italiani presenti racchiude tutta l’arroganza dell'intera nazione, non solo della classe dirigente, e la risposta "Ci hanno mandato via" è pura verità. Noi italiani siamo sempre troppo pieni di noi stessi, ci consideriamo sempre meglio degli altri e pretendiamo di prendere per i fondelli gli altri là fuori come facciamo tra di noi, di fare i furbi pure fuori dai confini, i saputelli. E quando la gente se ne va, anche se non lo diamo a vedere, sotto sotto pensiamo sempre che siano loro nel torto, non il nostro sistema marcio fatto di raccomandazioni, furbizia e inefficienza. Con tutte le nostre continue autocritiche non facciamo altro che nascondere una superbia infinita. Vedere come Grillo evita le domande senza il minimo rispetto, e come pretenda di essere preso sul serio dopo tutte le sue sparate mi fa solo vergognare per questa colossale figuraccia, ma menomale che abbiamo inventato la geografia e tutto il resto almeno!
    Forse alla fin fine Grillo, pur senza volerlo penso, ha fatto capire tante cose di noi.
    Solo il fatto che ci fossero così tanti italiani in quel auditorio e i loro interventi hanno ridotto un po’ la vergogna che mi sono sentito addosso per tutto questo video.

    • @MarsBorg
      @MarsBorg 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here is a Google Translation of what Carlo wrote above
      Obscene, I really struggled to watch the video until the end. Really obscene, and I say this as a person who believed in the MoVimento. Speeches without head or tail, ranting out of place, lack of respect and decency, only arrogance and presumption. I can understand that Grillo is a person from the square, of entertainment, but if it really took us to explain his movement and Italy in a decent way could have prepared something serious, understanding that abroad do not work the same clowns that work from us, and that now more than ever it would be good to explain the reasons, also valid, that have brought part of Italy in a certain direction, and the situation of complete abnormality of our country. Because if from within our bubble we consider many abnormalities normal, from outside they very often do not understand certain situations.
      That "You who have gone" addressed to the Italians present contains all the arrogance of the entire nation, not only of the ruling class, and the answer "They sent us away" is pure truth. We Italians are always too full of ourselves, we always consider ourselves better than others and we pretend to take the others out there as we do among ourselves, to make smart off-limits, the saputelli. And when people leave, even if we do not show it, underneath we always think that they are wrong, not our rotten system of recommendations, cunning and inefficiency. With all our continuous self-criticism we do nothing but hide an infinite pride. Seeing how Grillo avoids the questions without the slightest respect, and how he pretends to be taken seriously after all his shots makes me just ashamed of this colossal fool, but luckily we invented the geography and everything else at least!
      Perhaps in the end Grillo, even if I do not want to think, has made us understand so many things about us.
      Only the fact that there were so many Italians in that auditorium and their interventions have reduced a bit 'the shame that I felt on all this video.
