Remember when only women were phone operators? Probably not... I'm just that old. I remember the first time I dialed an operator and a GUY came on the line...

@@ricknineg Well, I am that old, I guess. I remember “playing” at a friends house one day when we were alone, calling people at random and saying stupid things like “Is your refrigerator running” “Well, you better go and catch it!”
After a few of these calls, someone busted us, and the operator herself called us back, chewing us out good!
It worked! Never did that again. Busted at age 7 or 8!

I listened to the 44 minute police radio from the North Hollywood Shootout that was over 20 years ago where these two heavily armed men held up a Bank of America. If you have time, find the audio on TH-cam. The dispatcher was incredible while putting the entire LAPD on alert and having many officers shot. The audio has a few photos in it, but wow.

I grew up watching ADAM-12. It’s the reason I became a police officer. While I was stationed in CA, Martin Milner had a radio show about fishing on Saturday mornings on a local station. I called him and thanked him for his inspiration. A few year later I met Kent McCord at a convention. I have a picture of us together holding our badges. I will never forget these men. “1-ADAM-12 clear.”

I always had that dispatcher calling 211 in progress whenever I came across a robbery case, or her voice calling 459 in progress when I had a burglary case.

Jack Webb's penchant for realism is illustrated by the LAPD Public Information Officer Dan Cooke. Cooke was on the station set for Adam-12. He glanced at the phone on the desk and realized that the numbers on the phone were the real extensions at the Hollenbeck station, the station shown on the show. He asked one of the production people why, who would know? "Mr. Webb would know." was the reply.

Here, in Houston, Texas ( Harris County ), whenever a police officer or deputy sheriff is slain in the line of duty, the “end of watch” speech is broadcast over the radio airwaves, of all units, city and county wide during the funeral procession as the casket is being carried from the church to the hearse or from the hearse to the gravesite before the “Wall Of Honor” ( hundreds of officers standing at attention, saluting their fallen comrade ). The dispatcher calls out the slain officer’s unit number, badge number, and name then declares he or she is “O/D” ( off duty ). This is followed by a twenty-one gun salute, a helicopter ( “missing man” formation ) flyover, a bagpipe rendition of “Amazing Grace”, and the playing of “Taps”. The Police Department’s and Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard then presents the slain officer’s family with the American Flag. This Solemn ceremony is heart wrenching and during my law enforcement career ( 34 years 1974-2008 ) I sadly attended several of these services which never failed to bring a tear to my eye or those of my L.E.O. colleagues 👮‍♀️😢💙. My favorite “Adam-12” episode is “Elegy For A Pig” first aired November 21, 1970. It depicts the life and death of a Los Angeles Police Officer killed in the line of duty, and it’s tragic aftermath. The final scene is filmed at the gravesite service and portrays the “end of watch” procession, as Officer Pete Malloy ( Martin Milner ) offers a somber reflection on the loss of a cherished friend and fellow officer 👮‍♀️😢. Jack Webb ( Sgt. Friday ) narrated the episode 👮‍♀️💙 ...

Yeah we never miss that show when I was a kid. My favorite episode was the one where Reed was on foot pursuit chasing a long-haired fellow that was losing him! Well for the one episode it was okay because they had a new thing called a police helicopter keeping the guy in sight until Reed took a shortcut and called up to him. The suspect looks up at the helicopter while Reed is leading him away, and says"not fair man,not fair"... LOL

Wow, memories!!! I have seen every episode many times. My personal favorite is when they were at the Union Station and a guy was shooting at them. There was a scene where a big side door next to the restaurant. My mom was the accountant for Fred Harvey there and she didn't realize they were shooting and she happened to start stepping out of that door as Reed and Malloy ran by. She quickly ducked back in so it never stopped the filming. In the 8th grade in 1967-1968 we went on a tour of Parker Center (HQ) and was in the communications room where they were dispatching calls. Hot Shots were written on a card and sent down the conveyer belt, just like in the show. I also got to see the NCIC computer access that they used in Shaaron picture that you showed. They did a lot of taping in my neighborhood at times, especially on the car trailer. Please do more Adam-12. Thanks. KMA 367

Probably had to tone the "action" down later due to the non-violent standards Congress laid on TV shows in the late 60's early 70's. Think the "A Team" and "Mission Impossible" where even the bad guys never got really hurt or killed, at least onscreen, anyway.

@@dwaynecollins4974 The wife and I binge watched the first 3 seasons a few months ago. The very first episode had Malloy going to resign because he had just had (another)partner killed, and Reed as his brand new (and disliked by Malloy) partner fresh out of the academy and a previous military tour in the Nam. At the end, they got in a gunfight with a gang of crooks and Reed did a "Sgt York" type round up of the bad guys. Of course, Malloy was impressed and decided to stay on the force, after all. A few of the follow on episodes had the standard "gun play" sometimes. They also had a antagonist cop partner team headed by I think it was Bing Crosby's son and the antagonist guys were kinda "trigger happy", wise guys, and disliked by Malloy and Reed. They disappeared after a while. I think the character the Crosby son played went to the helicopter unit as a observer.

I have noticed that there was a particular piece of blaring party music that was used in several early episodes when the officers were called to the scene of a noise complaint. It may have also been used on Dragnet as well. I have no idea of its origin, but it still resonates in my head.

    • @drakefallentine8351
      @drakefallentine8351 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm pretty sure the studio produced that "music" to avoid any copyright infringements. The only thing worse would have been having to pay royalties. There were two versions that I remember, but the worst and most annoying one I think is the one you refer to. The other one made it's presence known on Dragnet a few times. Ugh...really made your spine crawl, like it could shatter glass...and always at +10db.

By the way, when listening to the police radio in the cars, it is very relaxing listening to the women dispatchers and when something HOT came out, the supervisor/sergeant would take over the transmission and listening to the scanner, it always got your attention. I loved it when a pursuit would kick in and would follow it on my Thomas Bros mapbook. In reality, the 3-beeper sound got everyone's attention that this was a Hot Shot. I grew up close to the Rampart Division station that they worked out of which should have had their call as 2-Adam-12 since 1 meant Central division and the 2 was Rampart Division. I hope I win an Adam 12 DVD!!!

I remember having to time stamp cards and having to write info on these cards.- such as time of dispatch, when the unit arrived, when they cleared the call, and the disposition. When the time stamp didn't work- then had to hand write all the info. It was horrible when, there was mulitple units involved, such as in a pursuit.

    Thanks Rick. Great video.
I was a training officer for two different police departments and at one of them, that included training dispatchers.
There is an FCC requirement that you have to give your station number every 15 minutes, so that is the KMA 367 you heard at the end of shift call. With that said:
It was Halloween and we had been pre warned that there would be a tremendous amount of gang activity that night and there was. At midnight, everyone was exhausted and I decided to break the strict radio protocol for morale reasons, I said:"KAB thirty thirty, radio clear. It's midnight, the witching hour. Do you know where your children are?"
You could hear the laughter from the booking room, squad room and detective offices. The "midnight KAB" became a popular joke.
