The first time I listened to this concert was in the hands of the 25-year-old Maurizio Pollini on his birthday, January 5, 1967, on television. An amazing performance and interpretation. And now I have just discovered this wonderful version of Bruce, after following him in the Warsaw Chopin Competition. A real talent. Bravo Bruce.
Absolutely mindblowing performance 😲😱 To think Xiaoyu had started playing piano as a hobby at the age of 8 and on this recording he was 19! Totally incredible piano skills!!! GENIUS 👏👏👏
@Martin Baldwin-Edwards believe it or not, many kids know what they want to do at an early age and their parents support them. Chopin composed his first piece when he was very young. So, no, I'm not trying to be funny. Are you?
To a few that doubt Bruce’s musical genius. Am an amateur classical music fan, falling asleep during long boring passages, even if played by the great like Yuja Wang or Martha Argerich… There is something so fresh and riveting about his play that kept me focused during those long passages with no clear melody. Just to watch his fingers dancing along the keyboard. Bruce is the only pianist so far that has the most effect on me personally. And that is a big feat. Thank you Bruce if you read this.
Glad that we could hear the earlier version of Bruce Lui. Thanks for sharing this fantastic Prokofiev concerto no 3. He was a dynamite canon ball then and still is today. He looks more stylish , with different hair cut, and less body movement now in the Chopin's Competition. I guess it's age maturity at 23. Love him any way.
Bruce is a real genius!! See how he`s improved in such a short period of time! His Chopin has an originality in interpretation and artistic imagination in such a convincing way. Since the Chopin competition in 2021, I started to trace all of his performances! Looking forward to his future careers! Love this Prokofiev too. Bravissimo!!!!
Most excellent!!!! The way he is in sync with the orchestra is incredible. Acting as one great instrument as opposed to the almighty soloist and the meager supporting orchestra. His interpretation is fantastic and so energetic. Love it. Bravo!
Zhanna Sab 0 seconds ago And so rhythmical too. Impeccable timing. Even Martha was out of sync sometimes. Not to mention his divine dynamics, sophisticated phrasing, virtuosity, clarity, elegance and a pearly touch
@@zhannasab6374 indeed! I didn’t know Martha was out of sync sometimes!😄 Regardless, I still love to hear Martha perform, she’s great. I am presently captivated by Bruce Liu and can’t get enough of hearing all his performances, so well played and mesmerising! Hopefully, I can hear him live sometime in the future!😄
With his depth at 17, I can't wait to hear him play the Rach III at 24. He will likely be the most outstanding version to date...not without possibility anyway. Love this masterpiece for the piano and especially his interpretation. Love your genius, Bruce.
Thanks to the Chopin competition which brings Liu Xiaoyu to my attention. My favorite pianist is different for different composers (except Chopin, I do not have a favorite for Chopin), overall Yuja Wang has been my favorite pianist for many years, especially for Russian composers. Now Bruce Liu tops my favorites list, his interpretation of Beethoven, Liszt, Kapustin as well as Prokofiev is convincing to me.
What a wonderful young guy "BRUCE XIAOYU LIU"!! He was destined for a remarkable career! Of course - NOW the WORLD knows him as the CHOPIN INTERNATIONAL GOLD WINNER 2021 ♥♥♥♥♥♥
He enters, like an honest kid, the garden of music, with humbleness and obeisance, to please and enjoy himself and listeners. And so, Jesus grants him the gifted talent, no matter he realizes it or not. May this famous Bruce to know Jesus!
stunning... and the tempi's are PERFECT... and the orchestra was MAGNIFICENT... you could tell how happy they were with this young man...looks like they were trying to REALLY hold back their enthusiasm till the end... BUT almost couldn't...
@Martin Baldwin-Edwards According to Deutsche Gramophone, the best selling classical cds in 2020 belonged to the 2015 Chopin Competition winner - Mr. Cho! Obviously, you’re either lying or misinformed…. 😇
With the audience’s cheering afterwards, the jury didn’t give him a prize? I just checked the prize winners in 2017 , the winners didn’t leave too much a track record.
Po uczuciowej muzyce Chopina, Prokofiev jest dla mnie mocno industrialny, choć momentami też liryczny. A przyszły Laureat XVIII konkursu Chopinowskiego- tak wtedy, jak i teraz ŚWIETNY !!!
@Martin Baldwin-Edwards whatever you say. i judge for myself. after listening and playing chopin's music for the last 50 years. i do recognize excellence and musicality. also in those who were not rewarded.
Absolument FABULEUX !
Beethoven hacks the life through cries into improvement while Chopin moves the life through tears into perfection. In reality, Beethoven needs Chopins to comfort his painful wounds of hero while Chopin needs Beethoven to encourage his melancholic steps of poet.
Not so good. The sound is too metallic, without depth. Prokofiev should be played more instinctively and sinfonic, not plin plin plin. The sound of the piano sometime is cover by the orchestra. Maybe is only my taste.
In fairness, I don’t find the Steinway used at this competition such a great piano, whence the metallic sound. Also he was a very young man at the time, 19 almost 20, whereas four years later at the Chopin competition which he won, the Fazioli is a far superior instrument which really allowed his touch to shine. What I’m trying to say is that his (even younger) youth combined with the less-than-stellar Steinway in 2017 may well explain the “less than perfect” performance here, even though still very, very impressive as it showcased readily his *great potential*.
Congratulations to you Bruce for winning the First Award!

that was even not a piano in the beginning, just an electronic organ with 55 keys. His parents bought him his first upright piano when he was 10.

Shocking he didn't win any prize with such fabulous ( I don't want to use word impeccable) performance despite how difficult the piece is.
Magnificent!
And Argerich would love this, since she played a mean 3rd concerto herself!
