    I am an American from Texas. I'm married to a beautiful Brazilian woman from Rio de Janeiro. Her brother and family live in Curitiba and we have visited there several time. I have fallen totally in love with Curitiba. It is clean, urban, and overwhelmingly beautiful. Its culture, its architecture, its people are absolutely stunning. This video, I am sorry to say, does not show Curitiba for what it really is. The city is clean and has many very high end shopping areas. I have never felt unsafe here. The parks are spectacular while at the same time feeling very comfortable and safe. I am truly thinking of retiring in Curitiba. I have been to Rio, Sao Paulo, and even spent time with family in the beautiful resort town of Buzios, plus many others, and have not found any city more livable and beautiful than Curitiba. I have never found a city in the US as comfortable while urban than Curitiba.

      I know I seem to keep talking about safety, but in the US all we seem to hear about Brazil is how "dangerous" it is. BS!! Any city is unsafe if you go to the wrong parts of town or aren't cautious. I have live in cities in the US as different as San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, San Antonio, and small rural towns. None of them felt as safe as Curitiba.

    I agree with you man, I loved Curitiba, it is very clean, secure, modern, green. The only things I didn't like kinda are: it gets cold - i can't tolerate when it gets lower than 20C, people don't walk much - mostly move in cars, and there's no beach lol

      It's not the most exciting city, but it's definitely walkable (if you live in the central areas). I enjoyed my living time here more than in sao paolo, for example.
      Living in Rio was great mostly for the weather and the beach, but otherwise the homeless situation there was a bit bad.

    One thing i can say for sure. Curitiba may seem boring to gringos, because to live fully integrated in a city like this, you must at least know portuguese well, cuz most people from here do not speak good english and theres a huge language barrier because of that. We have no beaches, no major parties and the touristic attractions are more enjoiable for children or old people. So i really think you should bear that in mind before moving.

      My curitiba opinion was pre-living in floripa. Curitiba is just a city, nothing much else (outside of the occasional park here and there).
      Curitiba's reputation is in comparison to Sao Paulo which is just a beast.
      Floripa would be the city/island I would recommend for a good place to live.

      @@PremiumLeo I agree. But it's not as "European" or as organized as they suppose. Plus, it's quite provincial. I know it 'cause my parents live there. However, for a Brazilian capital it's really good. But there are cities (not many, unfortunately) in the countryside of Brazil which are better planned. Maringá (in the same state) is one exemple. So, I'm not denying what you say, just the proportion of it.

    • @CrackManT
      @CrackManT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@Teodoroviski Comparing "old" Eastern cities with new "just out of their diapers" cities from the interior of the country makes absolutely no sense, Maringá and Londrina don't add up to half of the centuries Curitiba has existed before them, of course cities founded in the last 100 (even less for the majority of them) will be better than the old and nearly decrepit 300-450 year old eastern cities that literally saw the country expand from them and onwards to the west, it's like comparing New York and Boston to Chicago, Atlanta or Nashville, there are multiple centuries of difference between them, in Brazil the state capitals faced problems that the modern and new cities founded in the western portion of the country simply did not because they had not even been founded yet. People tend to do this in Brazil but it just makes no sense, there are many buildings alone in Curitiba that are older than the entire western portion of Paraná, let alone the city itself. The "european" myth comes from a time Curitiba was an village and really looked what it was called, it just stuck around as the city evolved from that to what it is today, the city faced an explosive growth from the 80's to late 90s and early 2000s that reeeallly mischaracterized the entire region, it transformed the, at the time, tiny to small-medium sized urban center to an bustling metro area above one and a half million people in just 10 to 15 years, making it loose the appeal of "the safe, quiet, isolated (Curitiba had terrible roads at the time), european-like village" that it once was. Calling it overrated is doing an disservice to everything that the city once stood for, also the provincialism in it's mannerisms comes from the fact that it was factually isolated for most of it's history, the highlands it is located at around 900 to 1100m were not exactly easy to reach with horses, the easiest route was circling the mountains that surround Curitiba from the West, Northwest, North, Northeast and East to Southeast, it took DAYS to get to the city, weeks if you were coming from São Paulo by horses, it was so bad in fact it was easier to go by boat to Paranaguá then there go by carriage slowly moving up the mountains in the old Graciosa road. People dismiss much of the characteristics Curitiba has today but they don't understand where they come from, there is a reason the city feels inexplicably different, the main difference is that Curitiba, unlike the rest of the state capitals in Brazil which had an central urban core that expanded outwards, Curitiba was instead an agglomeration of smaller villages each with their own communities that grew into each other, making much of it's story is much different than most if not all state capitals in Brasil, Paraná was for a long time part of São Paulo and Curitiba under another name was already there, so was Paranaguá and the old cities that surround them. Despite the many problems along it's history, it remains one of the large cities in Brazil with more than adequate standards of living even for someone coming from an developed country.
