    To me this is a song that Janis really shows her range. Her voice is more melodic and smoother and can still reach down and bring the power. The song itself is so great. No one else can do it justice.

      There're others songs of Janis that she shows her range. I think to "One night stand", "Cry baby", "Catch me, daddy"...but she uses her voice in a mayestic way!

    In the performing arts - singing, dancing, acting -you'll often hear the advice "leave yourself some place to go." To put it another way, you want to start out strong and then end stronger, on a high note, so to speak. Don't peak too early, right? "Leave yourself some place to go." One of the special things about Janis Joplin is she seems to start pretty much at that very top, at a fever pitch, but then she still has so much room to go. And we listeners are left awed that she was able to take us someplace we didn't know could be gotten to.
    She's helped by a tremendous band of course who (for the most part!) are able to keep up. I think she and the band just push each other, back and forth, ever higher and higher. You don't hear that in today's music, sadly. It doesn't seem to be an aesthetic that is appreciated anymore.

Before the show started this really cool looking tall ,dark & cool hippie guy jumped over a couple of seats and sat down in a vacant one and smoked a j with a couple of fans. As a Janis fan for most of my life, my favorite vocal performance from her is a version of "Little Girl Blue," sung live, on "The Tom Jones Show." You *must* hear this particular version of that song. It's far more powerful and moving, vocally, than even her own great studio version. I can *never* listen to her sing that song, live, on that show, without being moved to tears. It's incredibly emotional. Look for that video clip!

    • @christianman73
      @christianman73 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevedahlberg8680 I think she was almost always in bell bottoms-- not sure if she was wearing high heels in that particular performance though. It's a slow song, a ballad (actually, it's a jazz standard from Nina Simone that Janis covered), so I don't know if I would describe her as "tearing it up" in the live "Tom Jones Show" version that she did in '69, but it is a very powerful and moving performance.

    Janis has that unique gritty voice. I suggest you listen to a very young group of five sisters and brothers called Liliac (Lily-Aak: which is Romanian for Vampire Bat). The Lead singer Melody has a very gritty gravelly voice. They do excellent covers like "I hate myself for loving you", "Enter Sandman" and "Crazy Train", and have some original work like "Mars" and Sail Away". The early videos are hard to believe that they have so much talent, so young. While not my favorite song, "The Trooper" showcases how talented these young people are, when Ethan who is maybe 12, rips on the guitar.

    One of Janis' underrated songs is MOVE OVER. She is in full tilt control of her party animal as she invites you to join in. Get up and boogie baby!! The party is on and Janis Joplin is belting one out for you.. What else do you need?

    Before I started watching your reactions, I already knew who Janis was and was familiar with a couple of her songs. But through you, I have experienced so much more of what she can do and have become a huge fan. Such a rare and special talent! Some people don't need to be in this world long, to make a huge impact that goes on and on through the generations. Janis truly poured her life out in every song she sang!

    For a future Female Friday reaction you should try this song I'm suggesting here! You know how great Ann and Nancy Wilson and Heart are. You know how great Led Zeppelin is. Well you need to check out Heart's cover of the Led Zeppelin song "Battle of Evermore"! Not only is it amazing but you will experience a different side of both sisters than you have ever seen!!

    Great reaction! I’ve been waiting for you to get to this. Welcome to yet another side of the great Janis Joplin!
    “Half Moon” is another good tune; a little softer (in JJ terms anyway) rocker she sings beautifully.

    Janice used to play at Threadgills in Austin,Tx. My dad Bill Neely played there too. My dad loved the way she sang. She was never treated the way she should have been because she was different. Janice was the best.

    Fun reaction and I tend to forget about this song so it was good to hear it again. You know how you covered summertime and some others and that was with her backing band Big Brother and the holding company? They were earlier and they were great and they were more raw in psychedelic but later she started working with the Full Tilt Boogie band like this one. They're very good and much more polished and not psychedelic. I like both arrows for sure.

    There will never be another unique musical figure like Janis in a million years, that's for sure! She was the most intensely, orgasmic female singing power I've ever heard in rock & roll. As a rock & roll lady she stands in her own category above all others.

    I remember subscribing to this channel after seeing the first reaction to Janis. It was one of those, "how can this exist and I didn't know about it?" moments, especially for Amber. You could see that a whole new world was about to open up for them both and I wanted to be along for the ride.
