I couldn't imagine that anyone would have bothered to make a video about my exact model headphones, covering my very issue. And yet, here you are. Thank you for a very well made and informative video. Bravo!
It was a bit of random chance really, I hadn't got a video to upload that week, so against my better judgment did this, and it's turned out I'm not the only one with the problem!
@@thesmallshed Thanks was able to repair my five year old AGK K52 headphone , also had to replace the right side cable as well but now they work perfectly.
WOW! I have EXACTLY THE SAME HEADPHONES - AKG K52 and the EXACT same problem, also the black wire. So followed your vid to a tee! re- soldered both back properly. Thank you SALUTE!!!!!!!
Can I just say: THANK YOU !!! 😊 I found your video simple and logical to follow, your voice very pleasant to listen to (your explanations as you went - just great!) and your message of 'have a go' BRILLIANT !!! You clearly love doing what you do, and I thank you for making such helpful videos that are also enjoyable to watch. THIS particular video helped us repair a favorite pair of K92's (similar construction) that kept a Voice Over actor very happy indeed! Cheers mate! 🎙👍
well i had same problem with my k52 and you encouraged me to fix it! it was my first soldering attempt and looks horrible but at least it works like a champ now. thank you so much!
My K92's have just suddenly gone mono. Will inspect and investigate the fault with your guidance. I have to admit a level of sincere admiration to the designers that the structural rails that create the headband suspension are actually conducting the signal. I did not see that coming and was always wondering if one of the rails was actually hollow carrying both the wires or something. Pretty impressive design.
Hello there would be a way to show or explain in the comment how it conducts the sound to the other side because the side that has no wire (right side) is badly contact with low sound. I don't know how the sound goes to the right speaker because I don't understand where the wire goes. THX
@@sherllock The wires that carry the sound to the other speaker, inside the ear piece are soldered to the metal headband. Google image search "dismantle AKG K92" 20th image you will see what I mean. The metal headband carries the electrical signal to the other side. Hope this helps bro. Check all your wire connects, also many other youtube videos showing the process. Good luck bro.
@@sherllock the metal headband inside the speaker case is uninsulated (the metal is exposed ) and is soldered to a connecting speaker wire , outside the speaker case however, the headband is coated with a black insulating paint that does not allow current to conduct when touched. Mine had the exact same problem, except the damaged contact was the white wire. Since i was used to bad quality headphones that used to tear apart in the cord, i never thought of trying to repair this one until i saw the video, thanks!
Thanks so much! I love this line/AKG 52 and own 3 pairs, 2 had gone out on one side over the last year or so and I was about to give up on buying again. I was almost positive it was maybe I rolled over the cord with my studio chair and needed to cut the whole thing and replace. Thanks to your video it turned out on both pairs your same issue with the small frayed wire deepest inside after unscrewing all 5 screws. But mine were both in the Right side. So if you're reading this and don't have a multimeter, you can still visually check it. Mine both were the black ones and could see the breaks throughout. So I just snipped (leave a little on the headphone side if you're not real good at soldering like me lol), I stripped a little on the main side with scissors very gently. Solder, I used electrical tape to really keep it from vibrating loose again too. Thanks again so much for this comprehensive video!!!!!
Glad it was of use, it's one of those random video's that I did that I wasn't sure if there was any point, but it seems to have helped a couple of people, so result!

Thank you for this! My boyfriend's headphones are doing the exact same thing and I am hoping to be able to fix them for him before he gets back from his trip overseas as a surprise.
Thank you so much, my K92's right ear randomly stopped working when I came back to my desk, the left side wire that conducts into the headband is frayed exactly how yours was, just ordered some more tin for my iron and I'll get to fixing it tomorrow.
Thank you so much for popping this up. I’m going to have a go at this fix it job very soon. I didn’t know where to start getting to the wires. Now I reckon i’m half a chance.
That was great help! Much obliged, sir. Haphazardly , the right side of my AKG K 240 studio headphones has stopped working, so will try and mend it myself !!
Excellent vid as my right side has also gone quiet on my AKG K92s I only buy AKG now because their so comfortable on the ears and they give out great sound. I am going to find my old soldering iron try and fix them ! Thank you for doing this vid , most appreciated regards Paul
Co sidering it was a last minute 'filler' type video it's been amazing to see how many others have had this problem. Perhaps AKG need to do a bit of redesigning, glad it helped.
Common design flaw with the K52,72,92 series headphones. Have repaired mine at least 5 times in the 4 years that I've owned them and every time was right speaker loss due to frayed wires in that left headphone. Unsure exactly why only the left headphone wire frays, but mine was the exact same as in this video. Cheers!
@@thesmallshed Absolutely! I believe the issue is pulling/tugging caused by tight tolerance of the hole leading from the speaker cone to the headband. I think making these holes bigger or lubricating with graphite might eliminate it. Another alternative could be to take the tension off the solder joints at the band so there's no twisting, but I'm unsure how this could be done besides gluing the cable down along its path.
My problem was a poor conection on the left hand side where the red connects to the green and is coverd with a bit of tape. I just resoldered them and used better electrical tape. Got to say I expected much better guts for preimum cans. Thanks so much again :)
Yep - Same issue with mine. It too me a while and testing all kinds of adapters and interfaces before I determined it was the headphones. Plugging & unplugging the included cable would sometimes fix it. Mine started messing up with in the 1st few days of taking out of the box. If I twisted the left headphone the right side would kick in and out. I think it's a bad design? Headphones sound good - when they work.
Thanks for this great video! I have been considering buying these headphones as they are on sale for $29.99 USD and get great reviews. I have had one concern and that is a short in the wiring. Many of this model's competitors have detachable cords which I've thought might be a deal beaker since in many cases in my past the cord has been the weakness. These things seem really easy to do DIY "post-warranty" surgery on thanks to this video. Thanks again... I'm now a subscriber.
Really useful I’m gna take mine apart I was thinking how they were getting the cable across to the other speaker . My guess was right Quite a clever thought. Didn’t really think it was gna be an analog signal running along the metal head band

I have the exact same problem on the right side of my K92s. Will be ordering a soldering kit today. It seems like the moving ball joints on these cheaper Kx2 models are pulling on the wires inside making them tear with time. I'm wondering how did you strip such a small cable?
Hi there. Excellent video! However, I know nothing about multimeters :) Can you tell me what to place the reading on? Would it be ohms? 2, 200, 2K etc. Also, what wires would correspond to the input jack. I can only seem to get readings on the black wire.
My 6 year old stuck the jack by force into his switch. When he pulled it out he pulled the metal jack off the end. Would you be able to make a video on the easiest way to repair that. Can I just use another audio jack to splice the wire and replace.
Hello there would be a way to show or explain in the comment how it conducts the sound to the other side because the side that has no wire (right side) is badly contact with low sound. I don't know how the sound goes to the right speaker because I don't understand where the wire goes. THX
The two headband metal strips are used to conduct the signal to the other side, so any problem is likely to be where the wires connect to the strips at either side.
The initial multimeter test you did is not quite the correct method, I'm fairly certain.. The base of the plug is the common ground, not the tip. So you would normally test the base to the "tip" & the base to the "ring" (centre contact on the plug) for left and right channels on a TRS type plug. Hope that helps! 🕵🏼
