    Pacer trains were ment to be a short term stopgap due to a shortage of rolling stock

    Fixed axles? Who the hell thought this was a good idea on a passenger train?

      This was an inexpensive train, as demanded by the Conservative government of the time.

    it's like they took two buses, chained them together, and pulled the tires off, and said "Job's a good'un"

      @Ciaran Wilkinson no they didn't they did more. They uses a freight wagon underframe as well as using two busses for one car ridge.

    The 143s originally came to Heaton -built by Alexanders of Kilmarnock. Because of massive gearbox problems the gearboxes were changed to Voith -after all the bugs were sorted out they were transferred to Cardiff and Heaton got 142s instead the first being 142 050 in Chocolate and Cream!! -in the North East!

    Love them or hate them, these trains are different to other types of trains and when they finally go it'll be very interesting.

    later on the class 142's were retrofitted with Cummins 10 litre turbo LTA10-R 6-cylinder engines with voith hydraulic transmissions. The 143 and 144's also had the same engine and transmission retrofitted. The class 141 also got the same Cummins engine and transmission I've just learned.

      Only 1 141 had the Cummins engine all the other 141s had the Leyland engines

      Daryl Yates didn't know that, thought they was all converted from the Leyland engines. Thanks for correcting me.

    I wish we didn't have so many pacers on my local routes (local stopping between sheffield and doncaster/leeds). I absolutely hate the 142s especially-they're so uncomfy. unfortunately normally if it's not a pace it's a 153 which isn't big enough for the number of passengers that use them

    I remember bouncing around on them , they were'nt a comfortable ride, and nearly going deaf at full revs doncaster to Hull

    Most of the clips shown in this video are actually taken later than 1990. The 143s were only moved to South Wales in 1991 from Newcastle. The new GMPTE livery only started to be applied to 142s in 1994. Also, most 142s, 143s and 144s have Cummins engines in these videos. These were only fitted from 1993.

    I wonder how those who left negative comments about the Pacers 10-12yrs ago felt about them in 2021 when they were withdrawn en Masse.
    These tough runabouts kept the railways going on local services. The 142's had a purposeful front end design, unlike the 'soft' looking 143's, great acceleration and all seating positioned the correct way, unlike the horrible 150's and 152's.

  • @HORNEBEEDUBLO
    @HORNEBEEDUBLO 15 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I envy you! I wouldn't mind a swap for the 142s you have on your local line for our class 150 noisy and claustrophobic 'greenhouses' that we have operating in the Manchester area!

    As new classes 142, 143 and 144s had Leyland TL11 engines and SCG gearboxes as on the 141s. Voith gearboxes were fitted between late 1988 and March 1991 to all 142s, 143s and 144s. The 142s, 143s and 144s received Cummins engines between March 1993 and 1996 as the Leyland TL11 engines were worn out and obsolete.

    @coveneyr Only the body is derived from a bus. The two axle underframe was built by BREL (Derby) from research gained from the APT.

    I heard the wiithdrawal of the Northern Pacers will start in September next year with the last to be removed from traffic in October 2019 before the deadline of Pacers on 31 December 2019. I reckon 'a few people will mourn passing of the Pacer. Northern has announced a multi-million pound investment in 281 new carriages, with the first of the new fleet being delivered by October next year. The 100mph trains will include air conditioning, power sockets, toilets and free WiFi for passengers.

    • @HORNEBEEDUBLO
      @HORNEBEEDUBLO 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not so much moaning of the Pacer. It is the fact that on a lot of Pacer routes, (around the same age or marginally older) cascaded Class 150/1s that no other TOC wants, will in fact be used to directly replace them. I consider that a Class 170 Turbostar is a bare minimum acceptable direct DMU to replace a Pacer and the eldest of these are now appraoching 20 years old.

    143 and 144 all had cummins not leyland. Only 141 and 142's started off for a few years with the dreaded leyland engine then went to cummins with voith transmission

    Ghastly little train, I remember when they were introduced, we use to dread them, they were more unreliable and uncomfortable than what they replaced, I still remember hearing their axles scream at Shipley.
