This is one of the more amazing factors of Stellaris, in the sense that you can have these massive battles, and it all still runs at a relatively ok FPS.
You get into an alliance with someone and then keep declaring wars to everybody for the sake of making them your vassals. All of the allied fleets will follow you during the war, causing you to snowball.
didnt help me against the unbidden... i had 5 50k fleets... and half of the galaxy as allies (around 12 other nations) even though i was the biggest with the greates fleet at all.. we just got anhilated... we managed to destroy one fleet... of 90k... they had over 6 of them...
i find the best way to defeat the unbidden (and the other two) was to have all of my fleet power in one place and start slowly pushing them back. also using the same strategy they use with their defensive platforms to hold them off should i have to bring the fleet back to defend my empire. mind you at this point i have very high level tech and 3 fleets of 250+ power
Well thats what i did to that time. I put all my fleets in one place... but for that they came up with around double the amount of ships i had (remember 5x50k fleets) and i was only able to safe around 15k of all the fleets together...
with the unbidden you have to have major anti-shield stuff..I defeated them with 1 50k fleet because I just eat their shields. Having a well balanced fleet with all the weapon types helps too.
+Cosmic Overlord Pro tip: Never colonize a level 25 Gaia planet. Without fail, every time I have done so a previously unknown Fallen empire pops up out of nowhere, says it's their holy site, and then goes on a holy crusade to destroy me. Much like the Covenant from Halo.
Just last night I got pissed off at being told I couldn't continue research into AI theory, so I busted out the console commands and declared war on the entire galaxy at once... Early game... Three massive fleets totaling 80 fully upgraded battleships did a suicide rush into enemy territory and spent 30 minutes fighting for their lives. Got the whole thing recorded, it was epic.
How do you get this to occur? I always end up building up massive fleets and enemy empires, despite having like 1/4 the galaxy under their control, never even try to build up.
They probably have more somewhere, or the fleets they had were destroyed leaving that as the lone fleet assets left. Presumably this isn't an Awoken Empire either, so no more reinforcements...
This is an ancient video (Stellaris version 1.0 I believe). Awakened empires didn't exist, and in general AI fleet power was way less. Also his fleet power was pretty small, so I'd wager this wasn't the first engagement with the fallen empire.

Lol, I declared war on unbidden with my 80K fleet and raided theyr tiny 67K fleet ... I had 45 Yamatto class battleships (kinetic battery) and 20 Moscow class Battleships (carriers, 1x fighter 2xbomber)... and then some plebs like cruisers, destroyers ... totaly anhilated them with minimal losses on ships ...
I made mistake I forgot that Unbidden are not fallen empire :) ... I was talking about fallen empire which has closed borders and hate if you colonize holy worlds ... they were pain in ass as they blocked one side of my empire with theyr closed borders ...
They were friendly ... but they stood in my way! I played agresive style as I was constantly in war ... not against one federation ... I alone won against 6 empires and then I went into another war against other 6 empires etc. ... maybe it is because I had 120K fleet power when they ran around with 5-10K fleet power ...
Meanwhile at 2313 in my playthrough: The War in Heaven started and I was elected to lead the Fed of Independence but my 138k are no match for the Spiritualists 430k... :D
you think thats bad... I have mods installed... i got hit by a 78k fleet... this was one of ten fleets they had and it wasnt their main fleet.. their main fleet was 200k this was about 2243
