My favorite since the early 70's.
Virtuoso piece. You can't help realize how much of a genius Copeland is.
Used extensively in Ken Burns documentary The War about WWII and how the war impacted four cities across the country. Haunting.
This was precisely what was on my mind while listening. Yet I never knew the connection.
In the fast 2nd movement, I find some striking similarities to Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto, also for solo clarinet. Both works employ a jazz-flavored idiom with polychords and syncopated rhythms, and both works are scored for a smaller orchestra (no strings in the Ebony Concerto and strings and harp only in the Copland).
I like how I would cry at the beginning And after a while it's something completely different🥹
Nice having the score to see, but I'm not crazy about his performance, though I can recognize he's an elite clarinetist.
Martin Fröst? Terrifyingly elite.
And you know this how? Be specific about your critique.
Check out Bill Blount. So much better than Fröst on this piece
@@ClarinetGREAT Benny Goodman will always be the definitive recording to me. Old recording but it's pretty good for its time
@@minerscale I heard Copeland wrote it for Goodman
Beautiful! What a great rendition by Martin Frost! Thanks for uploading
Whyyyyy is it in concert pitches????
Ian Bunt why not?
@@emanuel_soundtrack 1 tone delay
Because it is the pianist part.
So that the pianist playing from this part does not have to transpose when reading along with the clarinet part. Copland is allowing for the fact that there might be pianists who do not have experience reading transposing instruments.
That's the way it's commonly done in the piano part.
There's a lot of "El Salón México" in this.
Martin frost?
