Sassoon is pretty great. Thanks for talking about the trench poets so much. I read his "war poems" collection and was struck by the shifting focus of each section - first on the reality of battle, second on the outside people and structures enabling the war like the church in "they" (bought is a fascinating word in that one), then the ptsd/guilt on sick leave and in post-war life. Reading that collection (and some poems you brought up here) made me really confused to remember a grade 5 conversation when, after a reading of "in flanders fields" of all poems, a group of friends and i swore to go to war should canada enter one. Not a particularly helpful comment, but still.
Great job hit that like button people !!!
Speaking of Shakespearean swing, this poem reminded me of the We Happy Few, We Band of Brothers soliloquy from Henry V.
