    I bought this game over the weekend and played 8 straight times with my wife. When you factor in that this game could get hundreds if not thousands of plays, the price per play is so low it’s an absolute steal. I have Kickstarters I paid $500 for that I’ve only played twice.

      Just curious, any other boardgame you have play over hundred times?

    • @Therisktaker3

      I cannot speak for this author, but I have game that I have played nearly 300 times. I then have have 5 I have played over 50 and another 7 over 25. Some are short games and some are long. I have played a lot more, but only started tracking stats a few years ago. Sure there are games I play only once, but I have spent a mint on some games (Kickstarter) and others that are more reasonable, but it really is all relative and you could always sell or trade it away if it isn’t for you.

    Customizable Dice is expensive but the replayabilty in this game is off the charts. 300000 different setups is just fantastic and who doesn't like rolling dice?? Dice Realms is my personal GOTY so far.

    Twilight Imperium is $150 and often only played once or twice a year. Foundations of Rome is $140/220 and is only slightly more than a filler. A Lego set with 700 pieces could easily be $100.
    The "$120 for a 30 minute game" complaint just isn't the right lens to be framing this with. The game was obviously designed to be short and to be played many times, which it appears to be doing a good job at. High quality "after supper on a weeknight" games should be allowed to exist, and not be limited to $20 card games.

    Gameplay loop reminds me a little of Era but without the spacial puzzling. Of course, you cannot upgrade dice faces in that but gaining new dice with new faces is kind of similar mechanically.
    When you can pick up Era: Medieval Age and its expansion and promos for less than this, I think the price point does become a bit of a comparative issue.
    On the flip side, those 36 different tiles do seem to offer a good amount of variability and Lehmann has always been good at that kind of setup.

    I understand that your personal tastes shy away from direct confrontation in a game, but as a game reviewer I would think you would at least try those tiles so you could discuss them in your review and how the game differs when using them vs. not? Especially when as you say the game can be completed so quickly. Other than that, great final thoughts as always!

      it's a fair point, but in the end, i put my wife's enjoyment of gaming over any other consideration, and neither she nor i would have fun playing that way. i'm sure there's plenty of other folks who will cover the aggressive parts of the game, but that's not me. :)

    • @JJ_TheGreat
      @JJ_TheGreat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rahdo But I noticed that you used to demonstrate the aggressive parts in your runthroughs - and now you have even shied away from doing that.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JJ_TheGreat i do still try to demo aggression stuff to give a full feeling of the game wherever possible. i didn't this time because player attack act 95% exactly the same as the "fate die" attacks, so i figured that would be good enough :)

  • @ronhatch9175
    @ronhatch9175 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It still amazes me that the attacks in Res Arcana bother you... it's literally always possible to defend against any attack that can be made in that game. When a new card comes out, you have a turn before it can be used and every attack has a special discounted way to counter it. At worst, you can discard a card to get the resource needed to cancel the attack. Absolutely the least offensive "attacks" I've ever seen in a game.
    But then, I certainly don't have the Care Bear mentality so it makes sense that I wouldn't get it. 🙂

    • @completenincompoop3900
      @completenincompoop3900 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. You can't call it one of the greatest modern card games ever then say you don't play it cause a few cards allow your opponent to force you to discard a resource unless you block it....

    Haven't played but watching your review of the game my critique is it took about 20 min of the runthrough before I got the a decent handle on the iconography. As for the price pt. I agree it's high but so are all other games and being Canadian shipping is ridiculous here.

    I'm not much of a Solo or Co-op player so I would possibly skip on a future expansion that had those elements. However, if the Solo just added an "Automa/A.I." character that could be inserted into a competitive game as a 3rd player, then that would be interesting. Eager to get this one to the table since i am a big fan of Dice Forge.

    Your and your wife must have similarities to my wife and I. We choose not to use attack options in a number of games and we both really like this game. I believe the exaggerated time allowance is for people like my wife and I who actually take part in each other's rolling turn rather than just play simultaneously.

    Dang, that's a lot of options to change up the game. Kinda sounds like it's effectively the a base game like dominion plus an expansion or two, both in price and in content.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yup, it's very much "what if dominion, with dice?" :)

    I would have liked to see what would have happened if winter had come!

    • @rahdo

      It's pretty straightforward. For each die you have, you have to pay 1 food. For each food you can't pay, you take one -2vp misery token :)
