The city of Alappuzha, also known as Alleppey, is situated in Kerala. Alappuzha is the smallest district in Kerala with a long coastline and many lagoons and backwaters. It is often called the Venice of the East due to the canals that connect it to Kerala's famous snaking backwaters. The district headquarters is 70 km south of Cochin
Alappuzha has a wonderful past that owes its modern existence to the efforts of Diwan Raja Kesavadas in the second half of the 18th century. Diwan Raja Kasavadas was instrumental in making Alappuzha a major port city in his time and for developing the system of inland canals, used for transportation and navigation, that is seen today
The name Alappuzha means "the land between the sea and network of rivers flowing into it". It is a fitting name: there are a significant number of canals, backwaters, beaches and lagoons in and around the city. The best time to visit is from September to March. The monsoon, from June to August, always brings heavy wind and rains. This is an excellent time to visit if you want to partake in a bit of monsoon tourism.
Alappuzha is inlaid with channels that support thriving backwater tourism. A houseboat cruise along the backwaters can be a great way to see and do all that is available in Alappuzha. Houseboats can be rented for 6 &12 hours to few days. There is a new hop-on, hop-off service through remote backwaters in a shared-houseboat. These boats come equipped with a furnished bedroom, sit-outs, kitchen, modern bath and toilet facilities. Some of the house boats even sport an air-conditioner. The houseboats are manned by drivers and a cook. From the boat, you can observe the everyday village life of people, stop for a toddy (traditional mildly alcoholic drink made from coconut sap) with grilled prawns, watch birds, and relax in the middle of the lake.
The Lakes & Backwaters:
The whole point of visiting Alleppey is to enjoy the stunning sceneries of lakes, backwaters and lagoons. And there are innumerable water bodies throughout the town. Here are a few of them - The Kuttanad region of Alleppey is surrounded by sea, hills and paddy fields, making it an indescribably beautiful place to chill in a houseboat. Kuttanad is also called the ‘Rice bowl of India’. The longest lake in Kerala and one of the largest in India itself, Vembanad Lake is another place you shouldn’t miss. The famous Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race of Kerala is held in this lake.
Beaches:
Alleppey has two main beaches - the Alleppey Beach and Marari Beach. They are bothe the perfect getaways if you are looking for a quiet and peaceful place o unwind. You can take walks in the clean beaches and also drop by at the couple of parks and picnic spots that lies close to the beach. Couples and families throng the beaches equally. The quiet little village near Marari Beach is also loved by the tourists.

Indeed it is.... God's own country....... Ever since I came back from a, trip to kerala in December... I have been telling people.... One should go at least once......we didn't manage to go to alleppey cruise and athirapalli falls and couldn't stay in munnar....in the next trip, I will compensate myself ......but the journey from munnar to thekkady was awesome.... I could see the abundance of kerala, the picturesque houses, the variety of plantations, the undulating roads over the hills, clouds, plains, the sea, the history..... Not to speak of the Xmas vibes..... It was just fantabulous....
To tell you the truth, we also found the Kerala trip amazing. We are thinking of taking a little more time one more time. I was not satisfied once I went around. Kerala is truly God's own country@@shravanamuhuri9514
