  • Rhythmus 21 is a film from 1921 by the German artist Hans Richter: • Hans Richter
It is the first experiment of Abstract Cinema. It is a non-narrative-based film, the first of Richter's “Rhythm” series, developed through the placing of abstract images in a specific order. The film is conceived as a piece of music composed of images instead of sounds.

Hans Richter was a German artist trained under the influence of Cubism and Dadaism; painter and pioneer of abstract cinema, he has sustained throughout his artistic process the belief that art should have a political connotation, thus supporting it with the concept of revolution. Richter begins to experiment with the art of cinema because it is considered an interesting experience for the human eye and a complementary means of pictorial art.

si intitola "ritmo" proprio perché voleva essere musica fatta con immagini

Il brano che funge da "commento sonoro" è davvero azzeccato! Complimenti! Qual'è il vero nome del compositore?

Did this film orignially have no music?

There was no listenable music, Richter wanted the film itself to be music, in fact it's called "rhythm"

I don't get taking a film that was intended to be shown silent, and throwing sound of your choice on it.

What I mean is that it doesn't show a lot of respect for the labor and intentions of the original artist (Hans Richter). I mean no offense, the sound that you've added is interesting, but still...

consider this: if I uploaded this video to TH-cam without music, it would be an identical copy to a thousand others already posted; it is true that Richter conceived his work without music, but that is also because in his day it was not “technologically” possible. So it is worth trying to reinterpret these works, especially since they are digital copies that do not harm the original. In any case, this video has been requested by several museums and art galleries for Richter-related exhibitions or events
