CS Karambit, 'Steel Tiger' Review- Nutnfancy

  • Easily one of the best fixed blade value Karambits made, we take a close look at the Cold Steel "Steel Tiger." Weighing less than 7 oz, this hawkbill fixed blade knife is easy to carry in many systems. AUS8A steel, plastic sheath, stonewashed finish, and a perfect grip with kraton covering and security ring round out the Steel Tiger. I talk to its POU and compare it against the CS Recon knives for an interesting discussion of versatility. Originally designed as an agricultural tool, the karambit merged into martial blade arts and is highly regarded there. I bring you one of the best fixed blade options for this type and its price alone is enough reason to get one for testing.

Dj May Yes, I am a BIG gun and knife collector. I carry a minimum of 4 knives on me while on duty and usually have 2-3 in my War bag. Fortunately, police officers are exempt from the “switchblade” law in CA. I typically carry one auto on me. Either a Benchmade or a Microtech OTF.

Conceived and beloved as an agricultural tool, the Karambit has an ancient history. It's still here and it's still effective. Here I bring you one of the best Karambit values today: the CS Steel Tiger. It is a proven fighting knife and costs near nothing. Materials and build are excellent and it weighs almost nothing for what it is. The folding version, the Tiger Claw, is also shown and discussed. Both are limited in POU I think but are effective in purpose. A favorite of the style. -Lt Col Nutnfancy

The fox dart tanto combines the defensive capabilities of a karambit with a tanto blade and the Emerson 'wave' resulting in a scary fast edc knife that still has practical functionality in addition to defense.

The Tiger Claw is awful. I owned one for a short period of time and here is what I have found when I did own it. The ergonomics of the handle are terrible. It is too long and straight. The blade would not be able to quickly deploy reliably from a jean pocket like it can with a FOX Karambit. This is because the Triad locking system would always want to spring the blade back down into the folded position. I got cut pretty bad one time because of it.

Thinking about getting a karambit for when I'm not aloud to carry a gun (traveling to different states near me and what not). That plus OC spray seem like a good option to me. Thoughts anyone? For now I just don't go places if I can't carry a blaster.

I love this blade. I will usually rotate it out for one of my fixed blade defensive blades for daily carry along with a folding blade for just cutting stuff. Totally agree. I have owned almost every fixed blade karambit on the market and in my opinion this is the overall best by a large margin. Great review

Chris Vela I love the knife. I've always carried a fixed blade knife but so far this is my favorite to carry. Very light and nimble but got enough heft for some serious damage. My only complaint is the sheath. It comes with belt loops but I found it doesn't ride OWB well and conceal. So I had to use a different option to make it IWB carry

@Nutnfancy, I love the review, but I must say that I disagree with you when you say that the Karambit-style blade is really only good for combat use. I have been carrying a karambit as my primary EDC knife for 7+ years now and have found many uses for its' natural claw-like design.
As an EMT, I have used this knife to cut a variety of objects, seatbelts, rope, tubing, packaging, wristbands, necklaces etc. This claw design really helps hook into a variety of objects and gain a lot of torque without the risk of the blade slipping away. On a civilian side, I have used the blade shape to score or even cut meat, cut rope and twine, tear into fabrics, virtually every single use a conventional knife has the karambit blade also has. Including cutting into an apple. The only thing this blade cannot do in my opinion are things like wood carving peeling or heavy duty tasks like batoning. Everything else it can do as good if not better than a conventional knife because of the superior torque and grip it provides. I would encourage you to explore the many uses the blade provides as an EDC outside of strict defensive use.
I have the Cold Steel Steel Tiger, It is an excellent knife and one of my favorites. Although I do not use it for normal EDC tasks as much as the smaller karambits I have that give me a little more control. I also have the Cold Steel Double Agent 1 which I have used for most of my time carrying a karambit and have used this for most of my EDC tasks. I did own a Cold Steel Tiger Claw for a period of time but that knife sucked. It was a poor design, poor ergonomics, and the blade could not be quickly deployed with confidence due to the locking mechanism. I would not recommend it at all. Currently, I have found myself liking to carry the 5.11 Tarani Fixed blade karambit as my primary EDC and have been using that to do all of my daily functions and as a defensive use blade. I know it is a lot, but man I do love my karambits and would be confident carrying one any day.

I have the cold steel steel tiger. I have a special interest in karambits, and the steel tiger was the first one i bought. Its a great knife but its so huge to me i never found a use or method to actually carry it. Instead I've carried fox knives karambits and a spyderco karahawk. Incidentally i found carrying them that in a warehouse environment, the hawkbill knife blade is more useful than given credit. I used mine to cut bands on pallets of cardboard saving my wrists a lot of strain. It cuts open packages preserving the contents better because once you slice into the tape the back of the blade is angled away from the interior.

Sean TNPer I love mine. I use mine as a defensive blade in the Jail I work in since I can’t carry my gun inside. Of course my knife is only a “suicide prevention tool” Incase someone is hanging, I can cut them down. But it serves more than one purpose

    • @Jestickals
      @Jestickals 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Carry the exact same setup on my support hand pants pocket while on duty. The signet ring makes it impossible to miss in a stressful situation and I love how fast and effortlessly it deploys with the wave. You can have it out of the pocket and complete a horizontal swipe with it in one quick motion. The signet ring is key because you don’t even have to reposition your hand once the knife is out of the pocket since the blade is already deployed and you can instantly close your grip on the handle .

Finally! A "hawk bill" blade! Love karambits and have for years (based on my filipino martial arts experience). 5.11 makes a nice fixed and folding karambit for very reasonable prices (they used to use s30v steel but have since changed to I believe AUS8). Price stayed the same so happy I got in early. Karambits are very deadly (as are lots of blades) with a bit of training. Doesn't take much to do devastating damage. CS is a high value blade although the length is a bit bigger than I prefer. THanks for the vid Nutn and keep up the good work! Also, Nutn, I encourage you to try that blade out when you have a lot of cardboard to cut up, works like a laser beam!

  • @frankcastilogne8534
    @frankcastilogne8534 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I would carry both the smaller tanto for edc on duty and the karambit as a quick a back up weapon in the event of a gun grab. The karambit would be stowed semi concealed behind other gear on my duty belt. Both gives me the flexibility in defense and utility needs as an officer.
I carried a k-bar folder and later a kershaw leek for anything I needed for utility purposes. However, I did carry k-bar’s TDI knife which I was able to mount on my duty belt behind other gear. That TDI knife was there for a quick draw in the event of a gun grab, or I was knocked on my back and couldn’t get to my folder.
The TDI knife is not a karambit, but it certainly shares some similar ideas in shape and use as a fixed blade. In a fight I will never rely on a folder because at some point I expect the locking mechanism to fail when I need it most. With that said not saying folders are inferior I just always expect something to wrong when I need it to go right. I carry folders when off duty for utility and defense.
So that is my reasoning when choosing two blades instead of one as an officer. Two is one, one is none. Good review of the karambit.

I have been a big fan and I have purchased many items that you have featured in the Project and this is the first time that I got a blade before you had a review. The CS Steel Tiger is one Bad Mama Jama I have been learning how to use the Karambit in both offense and defense but it's a long hard road. I have had mine for about 5 months now. I plan to add my Steel Tiger to my Soft body armor rig a CQB to augment my CS Recon Tanto. I have been a big fan of Cold Steel even before the Project started. Right now the Recon 1 XXL Tanto is the next major blade in my near future.

We actually don't have a strict policy at all about carrying knives on duty. Helps also when you go to training in knife for patrol and have a back ground in the USMC. The Karambit is an excellent option and you can't compare any folder to a fixed blade for both speed and strength.

As you Yanks say "Here's a curve ball for you". I use my karambits exclusively in the garden. Pruning, grafting and harvesting fruit and veg. I have a steel tiger in the collection, but it normally sits in the collection rather than getting close up and personal with the cauliflowers and cabbages. My goto hawkbill for the garden is an el-cheapo Marbles because it doesn't have the retention ring and the Australian Customs won't confiscate it.

There is also some folding karambits if you really like that blade style. Spyderco and Emerson both make a folding one I believe. Karambits are cool, but I prefer straight designs for self defense longer is better. I think karambits require a lot of training and flash to utilize properly. A good dagger will be more deadly in the hand of the un-trained.

Spyderco Karahawk is incredible for a defensive blade. With the wave feature you can have that knife deployed the minute it leaves your pocket and with the ring to grab it is an incredibly fast draw. Faster then any of my other folders weather it be auto, assisted, or manual. That is a huge plus, but it's also the only thing the karambit is useful for.... which is fine.

I've got years of training experience in use of karambits. They are my go to choice for the POU you stated. In a real combat situation, you'd be surprised at how protective some clothing materials are. Weird things happen too. Karambits are extremely dangerous. Within a reasonable distance, things will be messy. I appendix carry this with belt loops in areas where firearms are not allowed. I EDC a leatherman 300 which has a utility knife that meets all my needs.

I've had that blade for a few years now. It's still good but the retention part of the rubber handle will get worn on the sheath. It still retains well but the draw is much looser than out of box.

I've had my ccw for just under a year now, and I've carried my Colt Govt model and or my Dan Wesson vbob with me every day. I love the 1911, and for me, it's a form of accessorizing, like wearing a fine watch. For me, the weight really isn't an issue, it's all I've known, so I don't give it even a second thought.

I really like the Karambit, but it does take a lot of practice before becoming an EDC. It is a most devastating tool, but can be carried easily with a folding edition.

Totally could use it for edc, Billy Bob Thornton sliced up some steak in Fargo with one lol. Also handy in a ground pound clinch; though a kbar tdi might fii the roll of edc better, if you can't get your gun or worse someone else is trying to get your gun... keep it up nutn, my condolences for your loss of Allie

Spyderco has some new knife designs out. I tried to resist but bought the shaman. IE large g10 native. If you can put some of these on your review schedule that would be much appreciated.

Sweet blade without a doubt! Karambits are great and I love cold steel's products! One of these days I hope to be your first gear check with a 1911! I'm out in Kearns and don't go north often but maybe one day!

I really like karambits. I use mine for a bunch of random stuff. The sharp point is really nice to get in tight spots. It can't do everything but it does most things well. 🔪🗡

It's a shame that sheathe isn't reversible. I look at that and I don't think of concealing that. It looks more duty lethal main. And if I were to put it offhand, I'd have to tuck it behind my magazine pouch (I'm right handed so left side) or I could put it with the sheathe exposed at the rear behind my gun at my 3' o clock. I'm comfortable with a knife in my main right hand but rather have it available for drawing my gun.
Also I've read reviews that say the sheathe dulls the blade when you draw it out, but I think that comes from a lack of technique because you're not supposed to draw it straight up.

I usually carry a SOG Karambit style knife on my belt for self defense along with a firearm. I also carry a Leatherman Surge to use as my everyday knife. You really don't need a folding knife on you if you have a multi-tool.

I personally think karambits are great EDC knives! The hawkbill blade gives you a lot of cutting power! The finger ring also allows you to work with your hands without having to put the tool down! 😀

The state I currently live in is just about as bad as New York, so I can't bring a gun outside of my house. That means I need to rely on a knife only. This looks pretty good for that.

Hey man, not that big on knives but I've seen most of your videos. Ktm stuff is awesome. Just put a 50% deposit on a 2017 570 enduro r. Will be picking it up in March. Mostly based on your reviews. Keep up the good work. Sorry about the dog bro. Also picked up an m1a loaded based mostly on your review. Love it. Pleasure to shoot. Makes my g2recon seem lame.

I, myself, prefer a Black Talon II. That is, if I have to have a knife instead of a gun. For a knife with a gun I like the Ka-Bar TDI.

I really like the karambit blades....I've taken to carrying a CRKT Keramin the last couple of months. As a backup type...create distance.....GTFOoM tool. If not that one then my Matriarch 2 from Spyderco. After watching some vids and listening to talks on the karambit....I think it would do quite nicely as intended.
