  • Bus #2857 was retired in the early 1970s, Roy H. Summerford of Montgomery bought it and used it as a tool shed for many years not knowing what an incredible piece of history he had.

This bus is so beautiful, can we please get that kind of car style back?
Edit: These sitting rules back then were even more crazy than I thought o.O

So happy that this very significant historical evidence has been preserved. Unbelievable that such dispicable laws against fellow human beings existed! Appalling! Thanks for bringing to us.

Chris, Thank you for posting this historic video of how it really was back in the 50's. I joined the US Army in 1959, and remember traveling to Fort Gordon, Georgia from the Northwest. I was really naive with regard to how African Americans were treated in the south. Needless to say how much I learned in a few hours when I arrived in Georgia.

The farmer had that bus, but that it would be the Rosa Park's bus was just a rumor. Until a widow of a Montgomery police officer reports to a local museum. Her husband had built up an enormous archive during his career. On one of the documents was to read the car number of the Rosa Park bus. This matched the bus at the farmer. Then it was proven that this was the right bus.

Pretty cool part of history! I wish the tour guide would have also told that Rosa Parks was chosen to start the bus protest. It wasn't an accident she was there and the strike on riding the busses was pre planned as well. I think it adds to the story to know that planning was involved and many people supported her. Thinking of her as a single hero (which she was and very brave) is inspiring but knowing the whole picture is more historically accurate.

I remember back in 2009 that bus was being moved around to different places. It was in Pueblo Colorado of all places for quite awhile, before it was restored. As I got to see it. Assuming it is the same bus!The one I saw was pretty beat up xD.

When I was in grade school, this style of bus was still used by our city! Hard to fathom that just 7 years before I was born! To think people who were a different color had to sit in a separate section? Ridiculous!! Yes.. the civil war did not automatically change things!! It’s understandable that who are black , might still be a bit gruntled about the way they were treated.. if the table was turned , people who are white might still be upset too. Not hard to understand at all! People who pretend bigotry and racism still don’t exist are wrong! We all need to make sure ALL people are treated equally and fairly

This is why monuments, even those that reflect negatively on our history, should never be removed, or destroyed.
God bless Mrs Parks, please do not let her courage be undermined by current or future politics.

The owners listed the bus on eBay for $100,000 but no one bid on it. But the listing did generate a lot of publicity. The owners relisted it on another auction site for $50,000 starting bid. By that time everybody wanted it. The museum won the auction with a bid of $492,000.
