If they don't want to draft a guy, they still have the option to trade for Trae, or another Hawks guy, or any other all-star that might become available over the next year. As a Spurs fan and San Antonio native, its tempting to want Trae young. He has not been surrounded by great talent and I do give him the benefit of the doubt (hey to each their own). But looking at the team currently constructed and other teams salavating at the Hawks best talent which is comprised of just Trae and Murray, I REALLY want us to hold off on going in on a trade for Trae (and they will not trade for young, it was reported). If either one of these dudes is traded in the off season it seals a top 3 pick for the Spurs. The Hawks are screwed because of the trade the Spurs offered to the Hawks that they took. It will be sooo hard for Hawks fans to watch their team give SA their top pick in next years draft for a dude (Murray, who probably wont even be on the team on draft night), and put him right beside Victor Wembenyama. And the Hawks will have NOTHING to show for their horrible season!

I don't think there's a single player in the nba available that can be paired with dejounte and make the hawks a contender. I might be in the minority, but Trae feels like a bad fit on the Spurs to me. Yes, he is an excellent passer and might unlock a next level Wemby lob threat, but he's also ball dominant, and heavily offensive-oriented compared to defense. I think the Spurs would be better served developing through internal growth of their young core, the draft, and smaller trades, rather than sacrificing their draft picks and other assets for a long-shot bet on a "win-now" move for a disgruntled flawed "basically untradeable" star.

I think a slight majority want Trae on the Spurs, but you're right it's a terrible idea for the reasons you listed and more. The Hawk's picks are way more valuable.

Any Pelicans' deal is not including BI. CJ + sophomore Hawkins + the better of their two firsts in both 2025 and 2027 (top-4 protected) would get the job done, but that doesn't line up with the Pelicans' MO.

Also Hawkins is not bad at all and can play the two, while they can trade CJ to the Lakers or some desperate contender for a first round pick too. So overall it works for both teams. Trae's deal is really bad especially when you consider he hasn't had a good season in 3 years and is still a max guy. I actually think the Pels might not do it cause A they are a cheap organization, never paid luxury tax and B they like to play zion as their PG and its been their best lineup, so bringing in Trae might not work if Zion can't get the ball and becomes more of a pick and roller (which isn't his strong suit)

I remember when people first started talking about Atlanta trading Trae Young. I just thought to myself that people aren't really understanding that Trae Young is not well liked around the league by players or coaches. I want to point something out. Atlanta lost almost 40 some odd games within 10 points or less! So they were in all of these games and weren't able to close it out in the end if they had someone like a Carl Anthony or Porzingis which I know is impossible but a player like that or as close to that as possible then they will actually get into the playoffs and be extremely competitive but they need that for sure.
I know this is off-topic, but why is nobody talking about the magic? They are a team ready to fully unleash and I think you could see a big trade for them. I want to see what Kasey has to see about this.

I can understand that the Spurs just chill and wait. There is no pressure to win now, build your roster with a solid draft over the next 2 years around wemby and then maybe 1 or 2 good trades. All this talk about wemby needs a wining team now is bs.
Why should the Spurs make any risky moves now? You know the weakness of your team and can build around it. Better perimeter defense and a good floor general. Trae is none of that. One more offseason with good rookies sounds way more like the spurs way.
MN isn’t trading away KAT anytime soon. He’s a key reason why they’re winning. Plus he’s still fairly young and he found his sweet spot as the 2nd best player on the team. The wolves wouldn’t trade away a core player in his prime for a bunch of expendable role players and picks that will turn into more role players. Picks are overrated in the NBA unless it’s in the lottery.

TBH I could see Trae getting traded to the Spurs since he and Wemby both want to win now and are both All-Star/All-NBA players. Though I'd keep Tre Jones as a solid backup since he helps with Young's turnovers and already knows how Wemby works. The trade you mentioned could work, but swap Tre Jones with Malaki Branham or Cedi Osman and the Spurs might be a threat and a half next season.

You didn’t factor in Trae’s unwillingness to still play great basketball for Atlanta. The organization is willing to trade him not just because he’s playing mid, but rather he’s not willing to play it all. He’s very vocal that he wants to get out, and player who wants out of their teams don’t win series and championships. He will be traded to other teams, because if they need to “win now” then they need a player that wants to “win now” not a player that wants to “leave now”.

That Bull's trade actually makes decent sense. Trae takes over the PG slot moving White to the SG, Caruso as your 6th man can play any front-court position. Atlanta gets a lethal scorer on the wing to draw defenders away from Murray and while neither Levine or Trae are 'good' defenders Levine is a hell of a lot bigger and more athletic making him a far better rebounder. That one, at least on paper, seems a 'win/win' trade scenario. The Laker's one though... not sure that one meets the smell test in either scenario. Pulling in the Twolves actually makes more sense than the straight Hawks / Lakers trade.
Wouldn't the Nets be an ideal landing spot for Trae, though I guess it would have to be a 3 team trade because I don't think the Nets would have players the Hawks want, but lots of picks

Dejounte was a good defender under poppovich. Crazy that Atlanta got him for defensive purposes and never enforced that. Trae influenced him and all his defence attributes went to shooting

Trae and Capela for Ingram and McCollum could be interesting. Hawks owe their picks to SAS, so really no reason to bottom out and tank. This keeps them relative and competitive, and possibly makes them better. Pels get an upgrade at PG and C, plus open up more minutes for Murphy and Jones
The one that makes the most sense to me though is the Pelicans trade push CJ into the SG spot, Ingram doesn't hurt that bad, and Nance doesn't hurt them too badly either. The Spurs could really use Trae, but it looks hard to fit the parts in.

As a Spurs fan, I'd rather get DeJounte back than Trae. We can see how good DeJounte defensively if he wanted to. Branham, Collins, + the Hawks picks is fine for Dejounte.
Mavs already have Kyrie and Luka. Trading Lively (a solid rim protector), Hardaway (better catch and shoot than Trae) and others doesn't make any sense. It might get them higher in the season but they can already win in the regular season and need someone who will give them more depth in the play-offs (and Trae is not that guy)

Trae is good. Basketball is a team sport. If you put him in a system with players that make sense he will look a lot better and win big games. We have seen him make the conference finals as his teams’s best player. That does not just happen to anyone.

To me Trae Young looks enticing at first but is a bad choice for the spurs. I'd rather have a pointguard like Mike Conley, Kyle Lowry or Tyus Jones if we think medium/short term. Trae Jones currently is doing a decent job for SA but I'm not sure he can be THE guy to organize the offense long term.

Trae is going to New Orleans, and the Pelicans are not giving up Ingram, they will instead give up CJ and either Daniels or Murphy with one or two of those lakers or pelicans picks.
As a Hawks fan, I want Trae traded but I also don't but the thing with him is though that nobody wants to pay the price (especially the Spurs) for a one-way superstar and GMs like Dejounte's game better. Dejounte is liked more. Teams that are desperate may take a gamble. Dejounte more likely to be traded to another team.
Spurs are in a very good position in their rebuild, why throw all of that away for a PG who can’t play any defense. Playing for the spurs and pop, defense is top priority.
