Ah....the iconic "P" bass sound. I love the look of this G&L Tribute as well. As you said, all you need is proper shielding - including perhaps a star ground. Plus you can ground the pole pieces on the pickup with a small strip of copper foil that is connected to the ground wire. That way you won't get any pop or hum when you touch the pickup. Besides, this is a great 'upgrade' platform to tinker with. Thanks Lobster!
@@LowEndLobster Of course I meant to say that the foil on the pickups is on the BACK of the pickups and touches the exposed poles. That works with alnico type magnet slugs - not ceramic bars.

Agreed 💯%, the CLF is definitely the cooler headstock design. I’m guessing there were legal issues originally over it being too similar to Fender. Has the statute of limitations warn off on that because all bets seem to be off these days?
Nice video, Lobster. Unboxings are fun and are kind of like vicariously getting a new bass. Couple of things. First, G&L as a company has never made any serious commitment to shielding their instruments, either in the control cavity or elsewhere. Sometimes in the US models there's a single half-arsed coat of conductive paint, but it's never better than that. Buying a new G&L for me has always meant having copper tape etc. on hand. So your experience is right there. Second, I do wish you'd mentioned the embedded, locking bridge on the bass: it's part of what makes a 2nd-tier G&L P-bass distinct from other 2nd-tier offerings. I'm sure you'll be setting up action and intonation etc. When you do, I'm pretty sure you'll find that the locking set-screw for the bridge saddles wasn't tightened down prior to shipping. That has a substantial influence on the tone of these instruments, so it's something to perhaps consider for upcoming videos. Nice job as always. Thanks!
Thanks J! I already shot the full review but I'll 100% mention the bridge stuff in my next G&L vid. Thanks for the great info though, I appreciate the top tier comment :).
I had ordered one of these last year and also had a grounding issue. On top of that and much more unforgiveable, the tone knob was wired in reverse and the truss rob nut was partly filled with lacquer/sawdust combo and then stripped out. I was shocked Sweetwater sent it out that way but they eventually made it right. I replaced it with a Lakland Skyline 44-64
Interesting to see this. I got a G&L tribute kiloton a couple of days ago and it has a grounding issue, and one of the adjustable pole pieces is stripped. I'd heard good things about G&L QC but now I'm not so sure!
@@georgeohara6743 I think you just got unlucky, I have an Indonesian made kiloton , and have had no isues with quality. Did you send yours back or fix things yourself? Oh actually I have some noise but only in single coil with the tone fully open.

It that footing is a tight fit, they might have to really screw the thing down to get it in. My lb100 had grounding issues, but otherwise, they were all good. Overall, they're still a great value. After some EMG's were installed in the jb and lb, they punched well above their weight. The 6 bolt neck and massive saddle-lock bridge aren't just marketing hype; they make a big difference
@@theagk19781 I'm going to send it back. I wasn't massively pleased with the quality overall (gaps around nut etc), and while I can understand the tone is pretty good I don't think it's for me. I think I'll check out the G&L jazz or maybe just wait until Sires V5s are available in Europe
That is a beauty of a P bass. Sounds really nice, the grounding buzz aside. That may be the BEST packing job I have ever seen for a bass guitar,...of course, for what you are paying for an instrument of that price, it SHOULD be pretty standard. I'm wondering if that " high gloss" finish on the back of the neck causes any friction when playing over any period of time. That may be the extra fret making the fingerboard end look closer. Harmonics across the strings right above the point where both pickups meet should be D (G string) A E B
I think I can say I like this more than a traditional P bass, at first sight and listen. .....the list does not include your custom P-Bass though! Looking forward the P-Bass royal rumble!
Thanks for the request! The Kiloton is absolutely on my list of basses to check out in the VERY near future. I'd probably snag the Tribute first. I have another USA G&L in my sights ;)
That’s right now I remember: this bass I play at home and fuss about whether I should have two pickup instrument and whether the sound is right. Then I play at a gig and - no problems - just right, does the trick etc. then you take it home and you’re fussing again.....
Great question JJ! I think the G&L is a bit wider and has more 'booty' where the Sabre is almost more similarly shaped to a US Sterling (a bit slimmer than a Stingray)
I think you’re right about the more junk in the trunk of the G&L but it’s horns (particularly the subtle point on the treble side) look more Sabre than Sterling to me.
What is the weight of this bass .. You know, i have the Kiloton Tribute .. weight is 4.67kg (10.3lbs) .. That´s a bit of a drawback ,- and the thick neck like a old P-bass .. Im playing it on stage , and it cuts thru very well , . Like a Musicman i surpose .. not for romantic tracks .. but ROCK .. But it´s heavy , and i don´t want to play it all night .. I have a BB Yamaha P-bass . It´s smooth and light weight .. :)
Right!? Sire is coming out with one though, and we'll hopefully be some of the first to look at em. Other than that, there's the Schecter, and Fender MIA. That's all I can think of off the top of my head anyways
I like the tone very much. I like "open"-sounding basses in general - you can always remove unwanted frequencies but you can't add them if they aren't there in the first place. By the way - have you ever driven/ridden on the Nurburgring?
Given the Fender's bumped their prices, I'd say this might be the way to go. However this is not without its follies. Full review coming in some weeks ;)
Nice review. Something to note, G&L does not carry replacement pick guards and finding a guard to fit is extremely difficult. They seem to vary from instrument to instrument. I have one of these that's been in the shop for almost two months waiting on a pick guard that is going to cost me a mint. On the positive side, the hardware is great and the pick up is really good. Not being able to find a replacement pick guard kinda sucks though.
I am very fond of the Tribute series from G&L. They represent a very solid value.
Finally you posted this video. That is hands down the best shaped p style bass ever. Sounds good, now post the full review!

Am definitely interested to see how their Tribute Jazz bass compares to the Sire V5.
Looking forward to the full review on this one.... Enjoying your videos....subscribed.
I think that P pickup is in a slightly closer to the neck compared to a Fender P. Great tone either way
Thanks David! I'll have to look into that
That may be the extra fret making the fingerboard end look closer. Harmonics across the strings right above the point where both pickups meet should be
D (G string)
A
E
B
I think I can say I like this more than a traditional P bass, at first sight and listen.
.....the list does not include your custom P-Bass though!
Looking forward the P-Bass royal rumble!
Thanks B@ssiCS! :)
Looks great. Sounds clear and clean. If you fix the noise issues…what’s not to love?
Thanks Rick!
will you please try to do the kiloton tribute vs the US made.
Thanks for the request! The Kiloton is absolutely on my list of basses to check out in the VERY near future. I'd probably snag the Tribute first. I have another USA G&L in my sights ;)
Sounds incredible despite tinny strings
I have yet to see and hear a bad Tribute. The grounding issue is a minor problem but I am surprised that it passed inspecton like that.
Lobster, sorry to change the G & L Tribute model but how about the Kilitron, sorry about my spelling...
Good bass for begginers no more than that good look good design
Thanks Ram!
I’m surprised how good that sounded. Makes me wonder how good the USA G&L LB100 must sound. 🥊🥳👍🏼💯
I don't think we'll do it with the LB-100, but I think a USA vs Tribute video will be in order at some point hopefully soon :)
Nice 4 string. Any Yamahas in the future. 504/604?
Thanks Iggy! Yes, I definitely have some Yamahas on my radar
That is one pretty p bass!
Yeah , we got another Tribute
You gotta believe me
Possibly the nicest P bass sound I’ve heard. What do you do with all the stock strings you replace with MJC roundwounds in gauges .45 - .105??
Thanks Rev! I usually toss em..... I should probably gather em and recycle somewhere.
That’s right now I remember: this bass I play at home and fuss about whether I should have two pickup instrument and whether the sound is right. Then I play at a gig and - no problems - just right, does the trick etc. then you take it home and you’re fussing again.....
Hey Lobster, have you ever been to Nurburgring? Are you a car fan?
Hey Jaroslav! Yes and yes :). I was there about 10 years ago
@@LowEndLobster thats cool!! :) did you drive as well? My travel there is like 700 miles, but coming from US thats next level 😀
@@passenger1jaro Yes! I did two laps in my 3 series. I did euro delivery in Munich and did a little euro tour heheh
To my eye that body outline looks like an exact replica of the Music Man Sabre. Can you do a side by side comp to confirm or deny?
Great question JJ! I think the G&L is a bit wider and has more 'booty' where the Sabre is almost more similarly shaped to a US Sterling (a bit slimmer than a Stingray)
I think you’re right about the more junk in the trunk of the G&L but it’s horns (particularly the subtle point on the treble side) look more Sabre than Sterling to me.
Sounds and looks great . Looking forward to the full review. Do you have the SB2 ? Any thoughts on that ?
Thanks Stuart! I do not but those are absolutely on my radar
@@LowEndLobster Could be an interesting shootout, G&L SB2 Vs Yamaha BB434 Vs Yamaha BB734A
I'm supposed to be saving for college. Dont make me unsub lol. Glad your checking out g&l. You should check out the jb2
XD Thank you Roman!
Great question! I'll discuss the weight in the upcoming full review. It's heavy, like 11 lbs heavy.
Why is it that p bass are hard to find in 5 strings
Right!? Sire is coming out with one though, and we'll hopefully be some of the first to look at em. Other than that, there's the Schecter, and Fender MIA. That's all I can think of off the top of my head anyways
Did you manage to fix the grounding issue? What's the cause?
I can't believe he not only responded to my comment but made the video I suggested
:)
Remind me the a t k ibanez looks good
That bass does have an articulate sound. Impressive. If it is possible, have you considered the Schecter P-4?
Thanks Rick! I'm actually eyeing the P4 exotic and the P5. Very curious about those!
Me too. I wish they made a P-5 exotic
I wonder how it compares to the L1000?
I like the tone very much. I like "open"-sounding basses in general - you can always remove unwanted frequencies but you can't add them if they aren't there in the first place.
By the way - have you ever driven/ridden on the Nurburgring?
Thanks Mario! Yes, I drove two laps back in 2011. I did Euro Delivery of a BMW back then and it was SO MUCH FUN. I want to go back
Hey Lobster, when will you upload the Jaguar H review?
That's coming sometime in early August
@@LowEndLobster Thank you sir, I wanna mod it more than Skyrim!
Does it exist in 5 strings
Great question David! As far as I know, they don't make a 5 string LB-100..... they should though.
lobster i've been looking at this bass and the fender player bass, thoughts?
Given the Fender's bumped their prices, I'd say this might be the way to go. However this is not without its follies. Full review coming in some weeks ;)
uh Mr. Lobster...The opening theme should be played on this bass! 😓
Hehehe it actually sounds very similar to the Reverend that I used
6 bolt kink
XD
Never seen a bad quality G&L. Maybe a p-bass shootout between fender, musicman, and G&L. Which is king?
You're a mind reader ;)
It's....well, just that headstock
I hear ya Nigel. Love the classic headstock on my L1000 so much more
My USA made G&L LB-100 has booty!
That's a pretty "P" bass.
Thanks Philip!
@@LowEndLobster You are entirely welcome!
Thanks Mark! That's great info.
Weighs a ton though…
A metric f#ck ton! ;P
Next time you say “very nice” please say it like Borat.
I'm all set XD
@@LowEndLobster lol, can’t wait to hear it.
I don´t understand this .. I allready give the thumps up ,- but you still asking for it ..???
Holy crap... you're actually the first person to point this out. I didn't realize I was saying it twice hahahaha
@@LowEndLobster Glad to help
It sounds great!
