I consider myself a global citizen and expat. And EVERY 8 MONTHS or so (it's never even a full year) when my teaching contract ends and I have to fill out paperwork for my residency card, it says "Extranjero" which means foreigner in Spanish. It's soooo annoying to go through this process so I totally feel you. I had finally gotten my residency card in June only for it to expire at the end of the month! I waited almost 6 months only to find out my paperwork was "Lost" because the lady at the post office never scanned and sent my paperwork!...needless to say I have a love-hate relationship with Spain!
Oh no!!! I always loved the way extranjero sounds vs “waiguoren” which translates to “outside person” in English 😂. I hope they get your paperwork together for once and for all! It’s definitely an annoying process no matter the country!
Just saw your video on leaving China. Touched my heart deeply. I love travel and thought when I got older the travel bug would dissipate, yet it got worse.
I hope you never let go of your desire for travel and continue to explore, as it gives you happiness and joy. Hope you find someone who can share your passion with you.
Never give up on what you so dearly love.
Your leaving China video really hit home for me, in so many ways. Your explaining how you feel was so well said. Beautifully worded.
Sending you heaps of blessings for your new future and whatever you take on next.
Happy & safe travels to you always, thank you for sharing your adventures and journeys on this platform. I absolutely adore YOU and your incredible videos.
x
Thank you so much! 💚 I don't think my desire to travel will ever fade. Like yours, it will probably get stronger. I hope I find someone who is down for the adventures too but if I don't, I'll still have a blast!
I really appreciate your comment! Many more adventures to come so I hope you subscribe!
Just stumbled across your videos and they're really fun to watch and very informative. Thank you for sharing your "life" here in China.
I just went through the WP & RP processes and I had to submit my passport. It doesn't make sense that they'll allow you to keep your passport because how & where will they insert the "visa" without your passport? They had my passport for just over 3 weeks when I received a text message to say that it was ready for collection.
Glad you’ve enjoyed the videos!
I’m not sure how the new process works with permits, but if anyone finds a way to stop using all the pages so quickly, it would be China lol
Wow you went through it those last few months. Solidarity. In answer to your question, I always think of myself as an immigrant and not an expat. I am an immigrant twice over actually. When I feel whimsical, I think of myself as a Global Citizen. At the very least, I am culturally aware and intend to keep adding to that experience of mine.
That’s it! You’re a global citizen for sure! I did go through it, but on the bright side editing this made me glad I’m not there anymore 😂
Nice video! I've been living and working abroad for 12 years and I still call my self an expat-it simply means I live outside of my home country. I will consider myself an immigrant when I get a long term or permanent residency visa on my own accord (not through a job sponsored work visa) and I can really put down roots in my country of choice.
New Yorker living in Mexico City, Mexico. I refer to myself as an "emigrant" with an 'e'. "One who leaves one's place of residence or country to live elsewhere."
That's actually the most accurate term! We don't use it enough. In your time in CDMX, have you experienced or witnessed push-back from locals about the influx of Americans in the past few years?
@@DualityIsAThingBeen here a little over four years now and there’s been a little chatter in regards to some of the more desirable neighborhoods where rents, home prices have really gone up. But it’s a city of 22 million people, so. I’m told there’s some ongoing pushback in the design business. Stuff here and there but overall as long as we’re still spending $$$…lol. It’s a great city. But in places like Oaxaca City, Mexico (which is magical), there’s been major pushback against too much White interest. Being an indigenous State, black and brown folk are more than welcome and treated quite well. Oaxaca is one of the states that wasn’t colonized…..so.
Yo you took this vlog to a whole new level with the awesome intro acting!👍😍 It's funny how locals are always trying to tell others how other countries are when you've never been there nor ever left their country.🙄 Cultured global citizens know better.😁
Do you think the multiple re-routing and paying again could it have been due to communication issues or unknowledgeable employees? Do you think it may have made a difference if you had gone with a local who could explain on your behalf?
The Chinese culture is much more strict and don't allow much room for error or deviation from the "official" process. They could get easily get in trouble with their boss, co-workers, or get fired if found out. (Remember, many of their co-workers are nosy.) So it's better to overdo something on the side of caution than be be lax.
Imo, the word "immigration" has a negative connotation to Americans bc they associate immigrants with Mexicans (border crossing) or anyone coming from a third world country.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed!
In my experience, Chinese people do not admit to making a mistake, ever. It’s a loss of face. Even though the fact that the same exact photo of me is printed on 3 different permits proving someone messed up, they’ll just say the policy changed. I was told the extension fee would be ¥160 for the third one, when I got the second one and threw a fit about ¥940. They lied just so I would calm down and leave. I asked them to put it in writing, they refused. Even if I recorded it, they would have tried to punish me for recording them. You just cannot win as a foreigner when a person with power is not on your side.
I feel you. I couldn't get through to them either in a foreign country, but bringing a local made a world of difference. I hope your remaining days in China are more pleasant.🤞❤️
I'd consider myself an immigrant if I went to live in another country. I usually ignore the negative connotation associated with the word.
I like to say immigrant because of how much that word seems reserved for "others". My mother was an immigrant to the United States. Many other family members have migrated to various corners of the world. The word brings me no shame.
Also seeing a big international-ish style government building with a courtyard next to a big road feels very... American?
As it shouldn't bring you shame! The government building lol... I can see why it kind of looks American-ish/Western-ish on camera but it doesn't feel that way at all IRL. It's usually loud, and chaotic lol
so if you summit your passport, what will happen
I have no idea, it’s not September yet. Before they kept your passport for a few weeks.
I want to be a global citizen someday 🙏🏽 When I studied abroad in Spain, I definitely felt like an outsider and since it was a negative feeling, I also felt like an immigrant because of the connotation the US places on the word. Yet here in the US, I’m often looked at as an immigrant even tho they colonized us, sooooo 😗 here I am 😂🤷🏽♀️ Great video like always sis. I love when content creators aren’t afraid to speak their truth and don’t try to toe the political lines just to not upset people
I feel like being a global citizen is part mindset and part experience so it sounds like you already are! The irony of America making people with Native American ancestry feel like outsiders! Ugh 😒
When you decide to be on TH-cam you gotta decide to deal with the good and the bad. I’m always gonna offend someone or give an opinion completely opposite of what was expected to someone. So far I’ve lost subs after this one but oh well lol Thanks for your support always!! 💚💚💚
Expatriate or immigrant? I really don't care! Native country or other places? Doesn't really matters! I wanna live in a place that is safe, full of opportunities, people're friendly and never judge a book by its cover, helps me get rich and lets me be myself. A place that I'll even consider to get married and have children so that I finally settle down as I get old.
If I'm going to plan to live anywhere long-term it's going to be a country that's an immigrant country, that's what would make my life easier from the start. China is not an immigrant country. Being overcharged an extended stay visa for just 7 days is annoying, and feels very intentional, but here in the U.S. we are overcharged at the grocery store, at the gas pump, in the healthcare sector, in the energy sector, in the childcare sector, and overwhelmingly so in the housing market. And forget even buying a house, a friend of mine just had to pay $300 for non-refundable apartment application fees, beyond disgusting. It's legitimately becoming unbearable to continue living here.
What is an immigrant country? Millions of non-natives live in China as immigrants.
😀
You should have gone to Hong Kong and re-enter with a tourist visa. It costs money. But this not cheap either.
No, I shouldn't have lol. That would have been more expensive and taken longer.
Haha 😛
Girl, I hope that the woman who overcharged you for a 7-day extension gets hit by karma. This too shall pass. Sending ❤and 🤗 Jess
Thank you! She was very pregnant so I gave her all the grace I could find 😒
I'm starting to feel I really lucked out with the timing of my invitation over there! This was super helpful and informative. Thank you. 🙂
Definitely! You’re welcome!
