  • @gregorsnell
    @gregorsnell 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    The explanation of the Pro vs. Amateur is spot on dude. Morten's 600mm is hectic!! I could see how the 200-400 with the extender might have been better though. Also that 150-600 Tamron could have been nice. Always good to challenge yourself though and work with what you have. Those Spider Monkeys are the best. Also Anacondas!! Wow Jodie's images are great too. Another great video dude!! 🙌

    • @CarlosHernandez-kg8py
      @CarlosHernandez-kg8py 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Worst place to shoot lowland rainforests are from a moving boat, with the exception of a maneuverable kayak where you can move into tight places. 600mm was a bad choice here. Wildlife photographers are leaving the primes 500/600mm home and opting for telephoto zooms for wildlife photography.

    Just stumbled on your channel, bought my first “real” camera where I can change lenses in April for an upcoming Alaska cruise. I’ve been playing with the settings and watching TH-cam videos to help explain them to me. I truly appreciate you adding the setting used for each shot. I ordered a Sigma 150mm-600mm off a recommendation on a different channel, hoping it will help me catch some wild life from the ship. Also fingers crossed to see the northern lights on our land tour after the cruise. (Off to watch more of your videos)

      @BrendanvanSon  ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome to the channel! Hope you have lots of fun in Alaska, the 150-600mm lens is a good choice!
      For wildlife settings, I always try to remember to keep my shutter speed at least double my focal length. For example, if you're at 500mm your shutter speed for sharp images should be at least 1/1000sec.
      I hope that helps.

    Hi Brendan looks like a great experience. I have 1 rule as a pro I’d say. I generally only take a photo if I know it can become a fine art or if to hang on the wall. When on safari in Africa for example I know what a leopard looks like when I close my eyes so if the composition is not favorable I don’t take the picture and I don’t believe so much in bad light as in bright sun light I often over expose to blow out the high lights and then go black and white and up the contrast for great prints. Just an idea. Enjoy Doug

    I think my choice of lens would definitely be a super zoom. If you have a Canon or Nikon body, then the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 would be my choice and on an APS-C body for additional reach. But, the most ideal setup would probably be a Sony A9 or A9 II paired up with the Sony 200-600mm f/5-6.3 for its AF performance.

      I own the 60-600 wich is quite similar to 150-600... and havent use an 600 f4 yet but from what in have seen on reviews in the net, if you stop down the sigmas to f8 it gets aproaches in IQ alittle bit to some of the big primes, but shooting wide open (6.3) still far behind. I just wondering if thats your case since you have both lenses. Of course bokeh and Af could be another topic, but i guess your are taking about sharpness.

    Brendan, love your approach. My two favorite lines: As an amateur, "you're kinda just snapping and hoping a moment appears in the images later" (so true and refreshing to hear spoken) and "I thought my version of it was pretty special, until I saw Morton's". Brilliant, aye? Why didn't anyone warn Morton he would be carrying that lens and tripod around the jungle? The 180-400mm with TC is at least a pound lighter (still heavy) and more versatile but also expensive when you have the 600mm f/4. Glad you guys had a great time. As Morton proves (and you too Brendan) you can great photos with any gear (as long as you can carry it). Which camera body was Morton using? D850?

    As a professional [motorsport] photographer I can tell you the difference. In 2004 I earned £58,000, in 2014 £7,000, because digital makes it so easy for almost anyone to get at least a couple of decent images and put them online for free downloads. So an amateur may earn £40,000+ every year, can afford to buy all the kit he wants and go on safari twice a year, a pro has to struggle to find markets and make do with the kit he relies on. Status doesn't make anyone a good photographer, talent, your eyes are what matters. No doubt there are amateurs who are far better than many professionals, it is just that they will probably enjoy what they do more as there is less stress, they are doing something they enjoy and don't need to worry about their next meal.

    If I were going into the jungle or on safari, I'd probably take the Sigma 60-600. A bit heavy, and slow at the long end, but incredibly versatile and very sharp. Also quite compact for the FL range (about 11 inches when zoomed out, minus the lens hood).

      @BrendanvanSon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of the issues, though, is that the jungle is REALLY dark. Even at f/4 you're generally shooting at iso3200. At 6.3 you're breaking into the iso 8000 area really often.

    Since the EOS RP is at such a low price of $999. Is it worth to purchase it and start investing in the RF lens lineup? Or save up an extra $500 and get the R?

      I think the RP is more than capable. I wouldn't spend an extra $500 on the R with the Rii or Rs set to come out in 2020. Grab that price on the RP!

      Brendan van Son thanks for the response! I do mainly product and travel photography and want to start incorporating video more for my clients. I was just torn. I’ve rented out both the R and RP and enjoyed both.

    Sweet video! And a new subscriber! :) What bodies are both of you guys using? I don't see a lot of Sonys out there! I shoot with a Sony a7iii FF and a a6300 crop body for a little more reach with either a Sigma Bigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 or a Sigma 150-500mm f/5.6.

    The big thing about shooting photo is dslr count every shutter close and open.. it will reduce the price for every shutter count. That is not good to trade used camera with new one: which make the mechanical of motor inside the camera easier to malfunction. It is same as car, expensive car doesnt run higher miles per hour ..

      700 photo for one trip.. that not sound good for wildlife photographer coz they use raw image.. Raw image give better data for tone and color for preprocessing.. and raw data image will not give u 700 image per single card

    Great video and content. Just watch Morten Part 1 in the Arctic. Wow! What a contrast that is! Awesome photos and a very interesting place. Have to admit that competition between you and Morten was won by Jodie!!

    Why only one photo from the pro your title " Amateur vs. Professional Wildlife Photographer "

    • @miguelm6307
      @miguelm6307 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. Remember the pro makes his living off his photos, so images he shows in the video would be harder to sell as they'd no longer be exclusive (since they've now been seen in the video). Also keep in mind the pro shot less photos

    • @ping3488
      @ping3488 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mention "Also keep in mind the pro shot less photos"
      Wild Life photographer uses Burst Shooting just like sports photographer does...and the same with Wildlife filmmaker many Takes to get a good one ...that is part of their secrets. So not showing us more picture is false...he knows with experience what is sellable or not this is why he is a PRO.

      A good full frame camera, shot at the right exposure does the trick.

    I have a little saying. A professional photographer goes where he or she needs to be when he or she needs to be there to get the best shot possible. An amateur photographer tries to get the best shot he or she can wherever they happen to be whenever they happen to be there. I'm an amateur.

    One of the biggest differences is the the Pro will have more expensive equipment.
    As well as being paid for their pictures, and for their trips to exotic locations.
