Still such a great movie after all these years! I love everything about it : the location, the scenery, the story, the characters, the emotional scenes with Bugsy and Irene and Murph with his son, etc. It's definitely stood the test of time, and I've been watching it over and over lately.
Series 19 of the deadliest catch on discovery blew me away the other day when the real life captain Linda joins wild bill as co captain on the ship summer bay fishing crab I couldn’t believe it was her out of that movie.
Tried watching this movie again and still cried goodness I can't take it 😭

Saw this movie for the 1st time just now and this movie was a roller coaster of emotions! Great actors carried the movie and made you feel like one of the crew. Which is why this movie hits so hard. I came here to see what others thought of the movie and how they felt after 🤔
It was a good movie but people have to remember that it is a TRUE story. Those fishermen lost their lives and those were their real names. It was a tragedy but shows just how dangerous commercial fishing is.
I remember who ever the critic's are saying this movie lacked emotion & story I mean what were they smoking. This movie is my all time favorite 😍
I think they just meant that the movie spends too much time focusing on the storm and not enough time developing its characters, which is absolutely true.

@@danielleschiazza6172 Character development IS plot. They did such a good job setting up the characters at the beginning of the movie, and then just fell off for some extremely silly storm sequences that could have been written way better.
This movie was made almost 30 yrs ago but how it was made especially the effect of the movie like the wave and the storm as if was made during this time of 2024.. awesome RIP Wolfgan Petersen

I remember when this really happened. These men were never found again nor was their wreck. They became legends. Even legends have it that they never died. Some of them were going through financial straits during the time and people believe that they all agreed to just said away to like an island somewhere. It was unlike them though because they had a huge haul of fish was worth quite a chunk of money. They were able to fish around the labrador sea, and just hit a huge jetstream which brought a lot of fish that year.

The crazy part is, even though they took a few liberties with what happened to the Andrea Gail. According to the data there really were waves over 80-100 feet tall...
According to NOAA buoys, they were, even when our ship (CGC Spencer) left Boston a few hours after Tamaroa returned with the first four pararescuemen who'd ditched on the attempt to lift the sailors off S/V Sartori. By that time, Andrea Gail was already assumed lost. We were sure looking up at waves higher than our 95ft master from the bottom of the troughs. The loss of the Andrea Gail men was sad, as was the loss of the parajumper from the ditched helicopter.

Wolfgang Petersen was a great movie director and he was a producer for underrated films such as Bicentennial Man with Robin Williams and Instinct, the psychological thriller with Anthony Hopkins & Cuba Gooding Jr.
Saw it this past weekend for the first time! I really liked the story and enjoyed watching it from the first to the last minute. Even though it's a tragedy it's still an awesome movie. I live in Belgium and even the fisherman here are a different breed. I guess it's pretty much everywhere now. This was a fitting entry in my own personal little "Natural Disaster Movie Universe"...

Movies back in the 00s were so much better and I was only a baby nowadays movies just suck. Horror movies thriller romance anything sucks.

I think that some cocooned shaped foam and fiberglass very buoyant "personal shelter" should be a standard for each ship. Add some personal location devicess too. Very big moovie!

I know I got this movie from Christmas one year a feel years ago. Ya it was Christmas 2013 I got this movie my dad bote this movie for me I believe. I pretty much cried threw the whole movie esaplsly the ending. I lost people before ☹ that I knew.. lost people to cancer and everything. So I can pretty much related to this 💔

If this film was marketed as a fictional movie, where the names of the boat and characters were changed, I would have no problem with this film. What I hate about this is that they marketed it heavily as a true story. Everything that happens on the boat is pure conjecture, no one lived to tell the tale. The bodies and the boat was not found. There were no radio calls to shore. All we can be reasonably sure about is that the boat sank. Further, some of the family members of characters depicted had strong objections to how the crew were portrayed and a few families tried to sue. I just do not like when Hollywood makes up characters and events but chooses to put real peoples names to it as a marketing ploy. Having said all of that, the film itself was pretty decent.
We can actually know a great deal up to the point of their last radio contact, and even a little while after. The boat almost certainly sank the way we see it in the movie.

I never understood why some people leave their partner because they work too much (according to them) i understand quality time is important but at the same time bills have to be paid. Leaving an otherwise good man for that reason alone seems a bit much.
It is completely fiction basically. But I love disaster and survival movies and I love this even though it has many many flaws. I still love the atmosphere especially if it's dark and raining.
Not entirely fiction.. The coast guards did have to bailon the chopper, the 3 people were rescued and the crew did die

Actually very little of the film is outright fiction. It's true no one knows the exact details of how the Andrea Gail went down, but many of the early plot points were part of the official record. Such as, we know that they were having trouble finding fish on the Grand Banks so they moved to the Flemish Cap. (This move was far more routine and less dramatic than the film portrays however.) We also know that the ice machine breaks causing them to head in early. The rest of the film is based on actual events that either happened on earlier trips (like the hook through the hand) or were taken from real life stories chronicled in Sebastian Junger's book or fishermen assisting with the production like the real life Linda Greenlaw. The rescue scenes were also a composite of actual rescue attempts on multiple ships that took place that night.
The reason this movie is great is because at the helm, is none other than Wolfgang Petersen, of Das Boot fame.

A perfect waste of time. Sebastian Junger's great story, heavily researched from the facts concerning this tragedy, have been diluted to a bunch of CGI and a storyline that does nothing but create loose end after loose end.
Right? It really is a shame, while the film will always hold a nostalgic place in my heart, it's far from perfect and it had the potential to be SO much better, given the source material.
It really just turned into an hour-long advertisement for ILM and computer-generated water effects in the second half
