    How Nature Works
    Secrets of Our Living Planet showcases the incredible ecosystems that make life on Earth possible. Using intricately shot natural footage, Chris Packham reveals the hidden wonder of the creatures that we share the planet with, and the intricate, clever and bizarre connections between the species, without which life just could not survive. From the rainforests of Brazil, through the fertile plains of Kenya and out into the wintry wilds of North America, Packham shows us the natural world like it has never been seen before.
    Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

    Who would have thought that the world's smallest creatures could take on the giants? This video is a captivating reminder of the intricate balance of ecosystems. Even the tiniest ants have a vital role to play, and the way they interact with these colossal giraffes is both fascinating and humbling. Nature's intricate dance is a sight to behold! 🐜🦒

    does anyone know, why would acacias near termite mounds grow larger?
    the video suggests that it's because of the nitrogen rich termite mounds, but, acacias themselves are nitrogen-fixing trees, they pull nitrogen out of the air and create sub surface nitrogen nodules on their roots.
    is it possible the video has the relationship reversed, perhaps termites build mounds near larger acacias which create nitrogen rich soil?

    Some new research gives very interesting info about what happens in nature. Like ants cut tree leaves and bring them to their home to feed fungi they grow for their own food - ants-bacteria-mushrooms co-operation produces nitrogen which creates good growing environment for trees and other plants too.

      You're talking about leafcutter ants from South America, though there are plenty of other ants that do remarkably fascinating things.
      The lemon ant, another South American native is a gardener in a different sense. When walking through the rainforest, you'll sometimes come across clearings as large as a baseball diamond or more that are devoid of all plants, save for a single species. These mysterious clearings were thought to be where a devil-like trickster lived by the local tribes, which is a fair, if incorrect assumption considering how crowded rainforests are. It turns out the lemon ants exclusively live on this tree and they have an herbicidal toxin that they inject into other plants that try to move in on their turf; by the end of the day, the plant is dead. The ants also defend and get most of their food from the insects that make the mistake of trying to eat the plants they live on, essentially making them untouchable by anything in the jungle.
      Other species of ants actually have livestock that they tend to, much like we do with cows. Usually consisting of various caterpillars and aphids, the ants viciously protect them from anything that tries to eat them in exchange for producing a sugary liquid from their bottoms called "honeydew". The ants will even pick up and move their livestock to greener pastures once they've consumed all the leaves or sap in one area.

    • @anneshome
      @anneshome 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All of that is fascinating, as nature really is. However, I am talking about some research findings here in Finland that I read about. Sometimes I have seen mushrooms growing in an anthill. Well this explains it.

      I had a pet rabbit who loved to eat butterflies, as long as she didn´t have to do any effort to catch the butterfly. I guess wild rabbits very often end up eating bugs that happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

    This is the first time I've heard of a tree growing next to a termite nest for nutrition which the termites don't actually eat and also produces homes and fruit for ants to combat larger herbivoures yet I thought the ants would be a good source of protein mixed in with the leaves, plus the ants are safe from the ground predators. Nature is wonderful and full of surprises on how everything works together.
