mamma mia in my opinion is the most comfort movie ever. the songs from each actor even those who can't really sing (which made me love it more) was everything!
i honestly don't even listen to original ABBA songs, I only listen to the movie versions of the songs because they are just PERFECT. And you are right, the lack of skill adds a lot of charm to it!!
I've loved this movie since I was a kid and the music is just fire. The day my dad bought an ABBA CD for the car was like christmas for me. CD long gone but I still jam to the playlist🌸
I agree, I'm totally fine with the fact that Pierce Brosnan isn't a very good singer, so long as he's on key, 'cause if anything it makes you feel less intimidated to sing along too if you're not a great singer either.
the fact that the cast was drunk throughout filming this movie sells me the movie even more. like hello, imagine drinking and dancing and having fun on an island in greece AND gettting paid for that?
i genuinely can’t watch the Slipping Through My Fingers scene without sobbing like a baby - I’ve never seen such a wholesome, melancholy portrayal of a mother and a daughter on screen, and it’s so beautiful. Thanks so much for this video!
I got a little teary eyed before, when all I could truly get was Sophie's part... but now that I'm a mother myself? Oh absolutely bawling every time like it hits such a REAL feeling.
I think something that's also super charming about that movie is that everyone gets to be vulnerable, like the dads deciding they want to get to know Sophie, want to walk her down the aisle, actually talk to one another, the women all supporting each other and helping them to process and express their emotions. There's just so much fun and honesty and personality in this movie and I love it.
Another random thought: I LOVE the whole part where Sophie hangs with her three dads on the boat. I genuinely can't think of other movies where a woman gets to wear a bathing suit, and not only is she NOT sexualised in any way, but she gets to just chill out with three grown men without any mention of her looks/body (either by voice or by camera direction/editing), and also it just feels safe and nice. She's not sexualised, but also not infantilised- like you'll often find in movies if a younger woman isn't fully dressed in front of a father figure it's either made out to be awkward for him (for some wild reason), or she has to be infantilised to remind the audience shes daddys wittle giwl. Just super super nice to see her able to have her legs and arms on display and just. that's not even mentioned. It makes me extra aware of how fucking weird Hollywood is about women's bodies.
13:22 is especially infuriating when i consider the fact that catherine hardwicke was one of the only directors (okay maybe besides the new moon director) who embodied the twilight aesthetic and tone THE BEST. honestly i think about what could have been if she was the director for all of the movies 😭
I don't remember where I saw this, but the greek people in the movie are meant to represent a greek chorus, and an extension of the gods. If you pay attention to them, they know what's going on, they poke fun at the characters in an omniscient way. Only Donna seems to be peripherally aware of their influence. Definitely could have had more greek spoken and Greek characters, but the movie is more a stage production than realistic depiction.
Ugh memories. When I was 13 and my mom took me on a mother-son outing. I asked to go see Mamma Mia. Somehow four years later she was shocked that I came out as gay. And yes we owned the DVD.
My dad loved to tell the funny story when this movie came out that the finale dance sequence was filmed next door to sky fall and pierce brosnan was embarrassed about this and being seen in the costume and singing and dancing because he thought it reflected a downfall with his career in comparison to his old role as hypermasculine james bond so it’s ironic that this movie sorta reignited his career in the public interest and this also speaks to the attitudes towards blockbusters at the time from even the cast as well as the audience
Also all of those male critics, it was not made for you, my sister and I each had 4 consecutive birthday parties with Mamma Mia themes when this movie came out, it was made for me
and we should also praise the second movie for its portrayal of mother-daughter relationship. I was always in such an awe that in both movies the mother-daughter relationship is actually the main plot point
My boyfriend never wanted to watch Mamma Mia, 10 Things I Hate About You, Mean Girls, Legally Blonde and The Devil Wears Prada because he said those were girls movies. Guess what I made him watch and what he liked. Hint: He liked all of these movies. What would all the male critics say to that? Not that I care... but who would've thought that fun movies aren't just for the girls and gays 🤭 (Also my household owned Mamma Mia as soon as it came out on DVD)
Yeah I think male critics are either raging misogynists, have a disconnect with male audience's or both because my older brother and cousins LOVE Mamma Mia. They also enjoyed 10TIHAY, and the Devil Wears Prada.
@@lovelove-55s I mean, even then I could see someone dismissing Mama Mia (haven't seen the other one) as more low brow but fully harmless comfort films... But _Devil Wears Prada??_ That movie is a legitimate masterpiece of structure (the film as a whole and the protagonist's arc in particular are _so_ well crafted) and villainous characterization (in the case of Miranda)
As a Greek living in Greece, thank you for that criticism! I love this movie, I understand it's made from the "foreigner's POV" but I think that if we start taking notice and changing all the things that have been co-opted without the locals' input, it would be great. Greece is not however a foreigner who just loves mythology or stories about Ancient Greece or even a tourist pictures it, it's not Zorbas (in 2022) and the Greek language exists, it's spoken everyday. Anyway, regardless, I love this movie, thank you for that video!
21:00 "Any time someone makes a group of men revolt... you know they're probably doing something right." Well, I'm a man and I couldn't agree more heartily!
I was in an Irish household with a mamma mia DVD and we had great fun with it. It was something that women could bond over no matter what generation they were from and for that it was truly special!
Also it's crazy that anyone would think Meryl Streep wouldn't jump in on Mamma Mia. Have they not seen Death Becomes Her??? One of the campest films of all time
Many many years back, my sister actually gave me a Mamma Mia DVD for Christmas, and it was one of those special ones that had a button on it that would play part of the Mamma Mia song if you pressed it, haha
My mother and I have owned 3 of the DVD's, and my grandmother has her own. This and Jennifer's Body are two of the most pivotal films in modern feminism. It showed young girls how dogmatic the ideals of masculinity being superior were, and are, entirely toxic and make them feel horrible about themselves. And then these two films gave us all the opportunity to look back with hindsight and explore how we have grown and can continue to push for a more free femininity- not an exclusive adjective for high-fem presenting women within a specific body type and sex appeal, but one that welcomes emotional maturity and a desire to cultivate growth in everything around us. There is no comfort in exclusivity, it breeds anxiety and unsuredness in one's own position in society while inviting everyone to explore femininity creates space for us all to support eachother. Okay, I'll hop off my soap box now.
Id also say teeth is a powerful film with jennifers body. I feel like alot of people never watched and it never really gained traction, but i found it better for the female image and power than jennifers body. It focuses on the predatory nature men have on young women. In the end theres alot of ways to interpet how the movie wraps up, but i found the main characters choice to maintain her power as she does as a way to cope with all the sexual assault she experienced. Crazy movie. Even though megan fox was so hot, and the gay kiss between her and dakota fanning still haunts my dreams. Uhhg to be a baby gay again.
also ur perspective on pierce brosnan's inability to sing ...ive never heard it put that way in teh context of the movie and yeah ! like when colin firth tries too it fits his character
Ok this is amazing because I just rewatched Mamma Mia 1 and 2 and they truly are just...so great to watch, it's such a comforting and feel good franchise and I cry multiple times every time I watch these movies
I remember when I was younger I would dream about living on that island bcus the movie made me feel so safe and happy. good to know we can finally reflect on how amazing this movie truly is
I fell in love with Amanda Seyfried as an actress through her incredible turn in Big Love, and "followed" her to both Jennifer's Body and Mamma Mia! I'm so glad I did. How much I love both those movies knocked all the misogyny I carried against "chick flicks" right out of me.
My relationship with my mom was very rocky growing up. But if there was one thing we always had together was sitting together with my sisters and watching movies like mama mia and mean girls, chick flicks, and movies/tv shows. These movies she showed us have shaped who I am today. These movies are so important no matter how “vapid” they may seem to male critics. It’s a chance for female bonding when maybe there wouldn’t be anything to initially bond over. And yes, we had mama mia on dvd!
i watched mama mia since it came out, at least a 70x times. I had 2 dvds because i broke somehow ( i have a theory that i watched it so many times, that it just snapped) and i got another one shortly after. This movie had and has a big impact on me and my family. When we learned that my sister’s girlfriend haven’t seen it we watched it with her.
as someone who has the entire movie burned into my very soul due to everyday viewings for 2 years (before it became every other day viewings) , thank you for talking about it !
the intro to this video is absolutely amazing, and also I am SO GLAD you’re talking about mamma mia!!! mamma mia truly a cultural milestone, everything shifted when it was released
my mom adores the movie and her adoration for it sort of influenced mine. she loves it for all the obvious reasons, but her favourite thing is how Donna reunites with Rosie and Tanya, the way the three woman scream and holler and run towards each other, shoving each other around, bantering, and imperfectly performing their little Dynamos handshake. my mom says it makes her think of her own friends and how they interact (which i have witnessed firsthand) - women well into their forties and fifties wearied by world and age, but still possessing infinite zest and excitement to see each other and unabashedly screaming about it. if it weren't for the fact that i already love mamma mia on my own, my mom's reasons for loving it is enough reason for it to have a special place in my heart. she also has many good words for Pierce Brosnan's performance. she knows it's not _good_ singing, but she finds it heartfelt and _full._ like the singing may not be good but the acting is still excellent. i also grew to unironically enjoy his singing - sometimes when i'm in the mood to feel things i would listen to the movie version of SOS, because _it makes me feel things._ (my mom likes to compare Brosnan's singing to poor Russell Crowe's performance of "Stars" in the Les Miserables movie - how Crowe's singing was good but was absolutely wooden in that solo.)
I like Pierce Brosnan's lackluster singing, because he genuinely just sounds like someone's dad rather than a professional singer, perfectly fitting his role in the movie.
Fantastic video!! I love Mamma Mia and I was baffled that in 2008, it managed to present a movie where women were sexy but not objectified, masculinity was teased and deconstructed, older women were desirable and had desires, and any form of the usual film conventions were tossed out the window for the sake of fun. I'd be curious to hear yours (or anybody else's) thoughts on the sequel and what shifts could be noted as a result of having a man in the director's chair/in several other leading roles. In my opinion it manages to maintain the spirit of the original pretty firmly but I haven't watched it in a sec. I could definitely think of a few pieces that could be scrutinized through a feminist lens though.
I remember seeing mama mia in theater with my mom when I was 10, and just thinking about how much Donna and her friends reminded me of how my mom and my aunts act when they would have their twice a year get together. It was an immediate warm nostalgia fest for me even at the first watch when I was so young. Even watching these few clips from the film with Donna's gang makes me miss those summers of sitting in the backyard while my aunts and mom were laughing away, losing their shit just from sitting in the sun, chatting, and drinking coronas together P.s- my family did indeed have the mama mia dvd AND my sister got me the cd for my birthday the year it came out. I still prefer some of the mama mia versions of abba songs because of this
It's the ultimate feel-good movie for me. I remember when I saw this movie at the cinema when it came out. It had already been out for two weeks in my small Norwegian hometown, but still there was a really long line going all the way outside of the cinema of people waiting to watch it. During the movie, the crowd was singing along, laughing, and clapping anytime something funny happened, it was a great experience, and not really something I've ever experienced in my small hometown before, but everyone is so familiar with Abba and knows all the songs, at least that's how it is here in Norway, so it's something pretty much anyone can sing along to. It was mostly women, but the few husbands and boyfriends who had been dragged along were all smiling from ear to ear by the end of it too. My old dad who watches pretty much nothing but science fiction and action movies really enjoyed the movie too.
i absolutely love the fact that not all the actors a amazing singers it just makes them feel like real people who love to sing and have fun there is no need for perfect voices when they radiate pure joy.
Then there was my father who made us watch the movie like 13 times and was the sing-along leader of our family. Like he must have dance us around singing to ‘Slipping through my fingers’ and crying like 100 times throughout my childhood. They are ones of my fondest memories. Why can’t these other men just enjoy things?
I worked at a cinema when this came out, had been working there about 5 years and I couldn't remember a time before or after where movie goers were so damn buzzed and joyful to see a movie. Also one of the only movies I'd EVER seen the audience cheering and dancing and singing during the movie (I live in the UK, interactive audiences during films doesn't exist like it do in America). It also stayed around FOREVER on the big screen and still sold out constantly months after release, which was extremely rare. I legit just assume people were watching it multiple times every week. I was so damn hype when they released the sing along version at our cinema (same film, just had karaoke subtitles during the song). I always used to make sure I was there at the end of the screenings so during the credit dance numbers I could charge to the front of the theatre and start dancing. People would always come down and join in haha. Constant dance parties at work; won't see that with the 500th marvel movie :P On a more personal note, I didn't have much opinion on it before release, but went to see it with my gran and basically just cried (happily) through the majority of it. Donna reminds me of my own mother so so much, and I also didn't know my father, AND my mum used to take me to Greece almost yearly on holiday as a kid, so this movie hit super close to home from the get go. Add on top of all that, the fact the movie showed such good representations of friendships, relationships, and family life just made it heartwarming as heck. Honestly one of my fave movies of all time. It's just FUN. Ps. great video, love seeing this film getting the love it deserves.
As someone who loves both mamma mia and the john wick movies i gotta say, mamma mia brings me such an effortless joy, it just hypes me up… and on the other hand John Wick brings me joy by showing him getting his revenge hehe🥰🥰🥰
I swear to God this movie is therapy to me as well, it never fails to make me sing and dance and be happy so I always watch it when I’m in a bad time and it always helps
The fact that I still listen to the soundtrack every week… I love mamma mia so much I just…. Wow. Tears in my eyes. Also you look amazing, blue eye shadow is giving island, giving greece The sequel was an EVENT for my roommate and I, we snuck mini moscato in the theater and got drunk with all the moms there
my grandma had a copy of the dvd and i would insist on watching the movie every time i visited, which was often as she is only five mins away by car. this is such a comfort movie for me as well because i feel like me and my grandma really bonded over the movie as she loves abba and this movie has made me love their music too.
The Slipping through my fingers scene when she’s helping her get ready for the wedding and Sophie shows how she’s afraid to disappoint her mother made me cry so much, I moved away a year ago and that scene made me miss my mom like a limb
the first time I ever saw Mamma Mia was on a DVD. I was spending the Christmas holidays (which happen in summer bc I grew up in the Southern hemisphere) at my grandparents' house in Cordoba, Argentina. I saw them joyfully dance and sing along to Abba songs, and I fell irreparably in love with the film, because of its undeniable joy and because I had never before seen my grandpa dance. I begged and begged my mum to let me add a DVD of it as an addendum to my wishlist on a letter to Santa, and she agreed. a few days later, I got a brand new Mamma Mia DVD for Christmas. I have watched it over a hundred times since, and it's impossible to feel sad afterwards. I wish (mostly straight, cis) men allowed themselves access to such unbridled joy.

I loved having this DVD at home! When I was little, I remember it was one of the few movies my mom, grandmother, and I could agree on watching lmao.
0:38 "October is the month of the witch, so the summer months are the season of Mamma Mia" this line is funny to me since I did a production of Mamma Mia, which actually closed on Halloween day
mamma mia is so personal to me. donna is literally my mom to the T, i grew up without my birth father, and my mom has always struggled with me growing up and going off on my own. slipping through my fingers is actually going to be my mother daughter dance song at my wedding someday
I built a shelf for my movies a couple weeks ago and wanted to watch something while I did it. I put Mamma Mia in the player and sung along the entire time I worked on the shelf. 10/10 experience. It's been one of my favorite movies for as long as I can remember. My mom and I both own it, and I think my brother does too :)
the slipping through my fingers scene makes me weep EVERY. TIME. what other movie can make someone want to do the splits midair jumping on the bed and then cry profusely
I've been watching your content for a few months now and I can really tell how much effort you've been putting in to improve the overall quality of your essays. You're absolutely smashing it and I'm 100% here for it
Dude I never had the DVD per se but my grandma did and can I just say that me and my sister wore that DVD out. We literally watched it so much that it just broke. Me and my sister were literally obsessed with this movie to the point where we'd act it out (weird I know but we were kids) and it was lots of fun! Looking back those were some of the best years of my life
You can tell this movie was written by women like it portrays women how they actually are the amount of women who talk the way the three leads (the older ones) I know is astounding its really realistic and fun
at one point donna says (regarding the hotel's problems) "don't think about it, let's have fun" and i think that's the most perfect quote to describe what this movie is
i went to see mamma mia with my parents to a fancy cinema festival in a park my city held when i was like, eight. convinced it changed the way my brain was wired forever, along with my parent's; we owned the cd soundtrack and we put it on every roadtrip until it got messed up from use a few years ago, and then we added the whole thing to the family's roadtrip playlist on spotify. screaming the last chorus of the winner takes it all at high velocity down a highway is a tradition for us, i still cry with my mom to slipping through my fingers. we mostly don't speak english, yet we have the whole thing memorized! we watch the movie every couple of years and think to ourselves that its truly one of the best movies ever made, it's one of my most fond memories of my life and im so thankful for it
Mamma Mia was released a year after I was born. I went through two DVDs because I scratched the first one so much from watching it constantly, Mamma Mia made me realize the joys of celebrating womanhood but also how women in film are neglected for the reasons you gave. I still watch it to this day and live by the soundtrack and love the campiness of the first film and it’s 2000s tones. (Unpopular opinion, I love Sam’s singing in SOS. He may not sound like a classic singer but he’s not bad and I actually enjoy his singing).
The Editing Thoughts section knocked me off my feet a little lol. The low angle red sweater dorm room colored walls with posters made me think I was watching a 2015 Sarah Z video for a second
I practically grew up watching mama mia. Since i was a little kid it was the one movie i remember the most from childhood. It has become more relatable and bittersweet over the years but im glad it grew up with me. It always knew how to pick me up when i felt sad or lonely. It was the movie that manages to make my day 100%. Everything about it feels so fun and exciting to watch no matter how many times (this is coming from a mostly animated media watcher). I love all the tracks and will ALWAYS ball my eyes out to slipping through my fingers
the song intros on the different sections of the video make me want to get up and dance. ALSO my household and my friends ALL had the mamma mia dvd when I was growing up and I live in the US
my oldest memory is going into a passionate frenzy and making pages and pages of drawings of sophie and sky at age five as if meryl streep herself was holding a gun to my head and screaming abba lyrics in my ear to make me do it
My family and I have been watching this movie since it came out, we basically know every line and song, I genuinely don’t wanna believe anyone can hate it and I feel sorry for anyone who hasn’t seen it
I think part of the reason that it doesn’t show more of Greece is because it was filmed in Croatia! It’s a spot that quite a few films have been shot at, mostly because it’s inexpensive. As much as I love the movie, it’s sad that the accurate representation of Greece, (both the culture and the people), was overlooked.
thank you for making a mamma mia breakdown video 🥰 about months ago i decided to watch mamma mia and the sequel and now i rewatched it for like 6 times already
I really really love this movie. Especially the Dinamos. I'm 22 and I can totally see myself as Donna, Tanya (Christine is my favorite) or Rosie. It's so fun and relatable ♡ Up to this day, my brother and I watch this movies and it's always the best time, just singing and dancing together. I'm glad I passed my great taste to him lol
I could watch and listen to you forever - I definitely have to watch the movie again (we have it at home, thankfully! 👀)! And your intelligent deep dive makes it so much better! 🌺 I remember when I was a kid, that I found the performance of „Lay All Your Love On Me“ so exciting - it was the first depiction of sexual desire in film I saw. And I think it already kind of shaped my wishes, which was heavily needed. I‘m glad I saw the duet scene before experiencing the ABBA song, because the associations are totally different. Overall big thank you! 🥂🥂🌺🌺🌺🌊🌊🌊💖💖💖
i've never watched you before (although i've been meaning to) but i liked this video the second i clicked on it! any lover of mamma mia is someone who is guaranteed to receive my support. i talk about mamma mia all the time and why it's my favourite film, and i love hearing people talking about it! this video was so well put together, thank you for talking about it!
mamma mia is definitely in my top 10 movies ever, it truly is amazing. whenever someone tells me that they don't like it, i just don't know what to say to them. i do have a mamma mia dvd, and i live in rural alaska
I remember being on holiday in Lanzarote as a child in the summer of 2008 and we bought a pirated copy of mamma mia and spent a whole night singing with my family!! Such a simple happy time 💕✨✨
First off - the writing and editing of this video is *amazing*! Had I been drinking while watching it would have resulted in many spit takes. Secondly - YES my household totally had a Mamma Mia! DVD, and it was frequently deployed too. Thank you so much for this video, I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end.
U.S. 26 year old here. When I say no movie defines my childhood vacations like this one, not an exaggeration. Parents (the moms AND dads) and all the kids singing and dancing along to this movie, let alone after the parents had a few drinks during the day, was always the highlight of the trip and a tradition. Still makes me feel all warm and now as an adult I appreciate it so much more. I have always said that if there were to be one movie I would have loved to be a part of, it would be this one. A true classic and one that still lives up no matter how much time passes (and how offensive Pierce Brosnan's singing voice is)!
this video has been great. as a teen in the early 00s I went to The Dark Knight in theaters many times, I love the John Wick movies, and I only recently watched Mama Mia! out of curiosity because of the more recent discussion about it. and I loved it, it is absurd and full of disco music but all the middle aged characters having fun, falling back in love etc is something so few films (or any media, honestly) touches on and I loved every moment of Streep's character and her friends, her former partners, singing and dancing and just being young at heart. I think everyone should watch this movie just for that-knowing you can still have fun, love, be youthful in spirit during your middle ages.
my family still has our mamma mia dvd even though our dvd player broke YEARS ago. it's been the movie that has stayed at the top of my 'comfort films' list for as long as i can remember making it in the first place and there's a damn good reason for that.
I just discovered you yesterday and I have replayed this video 5 times already. You are my new comfort creator and this is my new comfort video (just like mamma Mia is my comfort movie!)💓💓💓
I watched this movie in Germany during a foreign exchange program when I was 17. It was my first time away from home and on an international trip. I have a such a sweet spot for this movie and helped me feel a little less homesick. I had only heard Abba songs in spanish and was surprised that the songs were also in English. I loved it so much that I bought the album of their greatest hits. When I came home Germany my family and I went straight on a road trip to Mexico and we listened to that album non-stop. Abba makes me think of my last summer before my senior year of highschool and simpler times with my family. I cant wait to watch this movie with my baby girl when she is older. :')
The most wholesome thing is that Mamma Mia is my father's absolute favourite film! He loves it so much he could watch it once a month and this year we went all toghether to the musical it was such a bliss!
i just love everything about abba, their songs, movies, the Broadway stage, shows and ther stories as well. As a huge fan i went to watch the mamma mia movie, and that is so stupid and silly, i watched it begin to finish with a wide smile all over my face. That movie is just fun and makes you feel really happy for some reason
My sister and I last visited our home state of Maryland without our parents (which was extra nice since they were abusive) when I was 15. We stayed with our childhood friends, also sisters, whose mom was like a second mom to us. They had the sing along edition on dvd. We watched it every single day, all five of us ladies singing along to each word, dancing around the crowded living room, then singing and dancing along to the songs happily stuck in our heads at the beach. Those memories are some of those I hold most dear, it was the happiest and most free I had felt in a while. This movie… I can’t explain enough the joy it brought a broken young woman.
Thanks to TH-cam for recommending me this video after I watched the film 3 times only this year (so far). You're so funny and on point and I really enjoy your editing style. The Karlie Kloss one in the beginning really made me laugh. Cannot wait to check out your other videos 🖤
My family owned the mamma Mia dvd and the mamma Mia digital edition. This movie was and still is mine and my three sisters favorite movie to watch and cry together. A very wholesome time all around.
this comment section is so wholesome!! mamma mia truly unites us all
this comment section is so wholesome!!
mamma mia truly unites us all
mamma mia in my opinion is the most comfort movie ever. the songs from each actor even those who can't really sing (which made me love it more) was everything!
i honestly don't even listen to original ABBA songs, I only listen to the movie versions of the songs because they are just PERFECT. And you are right, the lack of skill adds a lot of charm to it!!
@@lvmln7843 omg same here!! Dancing Queen is a hundred times more enjoyable when listening to the version from the Mamma Mia soundtrack
Thats not true Christine baranski deny it in am interview😢
i genuinely can’t watch the Slipping Through My Fingers scene without sobbing like a baby - I’ve never seen such a wholesome, melancholy portrayal of a mother and a daughter on screen, and it’s so beautiful. Thanks so much for this video!
I got a little teary eyed before, when all I could truly get was Sophie's part... but now that I'm a mother myself? Oh absolutely bawling every time like it hits such a REAL feeling.
Omg especially after losing my mom, forget about it I crumble every time.
what about daughter and dad Jasmine and the sultan
Yes! Breaking Dawn was a travesty and I’m still upset. Btw love your videos ❤️
imagine the POWER of the twilight franchise had it been directed by hardwicke... we were ROBBED!
last month i decided to start watching mamma mia on the first day of every month and it has dramatically improved my life
i love this for you
oh my god i should start doing this
I watch it regularly too but switch it up with Amélie, Chocolat, Dirty Dancing and 10 Things I Hate About You. Can recommend!
@@lisabelw7782add Mrs Harris goes to Paris!
I always thought that Pierce Brosnan’s awkward, strained singing was a character choice and really added to Sam’s personality.
Or maybe he just sucks at singing
It's obviously one of the worst things about the movie. It makes it unwatchable.
right i didn’t even question it and found the singing so hot lol
I kinda love it, it adds more emotion somehow
this movie unironically helped me work through my daddy issues as a child 😭 its the ultimate comfort movie I love it so much
free therapy!!!
Sameeeeeeee my 2 step dad's say hi
I don't see what being gay has anything to do with it?
Oh my goodness I had the exact same experience lmao
@@bessieburnet9816 then you need new glasses, babe
My dad loved to tell the funny story when this movie came out that the finale dance sequence was filmed next door to sky fall and pierce brosnan was embarrassed about this and being seen in the costume and singing and dancing because he thought it reflected a downfall with his career in comparison to his old role as hypermasculine james bond so it’s ironic that this movie sorta reignited his career in the public interest and this also speaks to the attitudes towards blockbusters at the time from even the cast as well as the audience
Also all of those male critics, it was not made for you, my sister and I each had 4 consecutive birthday parties with Mamma Mia themes when this movie came out, it was made for me
This was a great comment thank you
i’m convinced that anyone who passionately hates Mamma Mia is just misogynistic
or any "chick flick" periodt
@Rebecca Woolf bestie, if watching Mamma Mia left you in a rage there’s clearly something else going on there
YESSSSS
Or just hates happiness
they really are though, in my experience
and we should also praise the second movie for its portrayal of mother-daughter relationship.
Not that I care... but who would've thought that fun movies aren't just for the girls and gays 🤭
(Also my household owned Mamma Mia as soon as it came out on DVD)
Wait, were critics hard on Devil Wears Prada??
Weird. Very very weird. You'd think critics especially would be all over that film
My husband watches anything I want to, we are currently making our way through the first few seasons of Project Runway. I love that man❤
😒
As a Greek living in Greece, thank you for that criticism! I love this movie, I understand it's made from the "foreigner's POV" but I think that if we start taking notice and changing all the things that have been co-opted without the locals' input, it would be great. Greece is not however a foreigner who just loves mythology or stories about Ancient Greece or even a tourist pictures it, it's not Zorbas (in 2022) and the Greek language exists, it's spoken everyday. Anyway, regardless, I love this movie, thank you for that video!
I feel like something about the Greeks in the background gives off more of a vibe from the χωριά in Καρπενήσι rather than the islanders
21:00 "Any time someone makes a group of men revolt... you know they're probably doing something right." Well, I'm a man and I couldn't agree more heartily!
A real musical where not every character knows how to belt tunes... It's just that real and fun!
When we learned that my sister’s girlfriend haven’t seen it we watched it with her.
as someone who has the entire movie burned into my very soul due to everyday viewings for 2 years (before it became every other day viewings) , thank you for talking about it !
the intro to this video is absolutely amazing, and also I am SO GLAD you’re talking about mamma mia!!! mamma mia truly a cultural milestone, everything shifted when it was released
amen!!!!
my mom adores the movie and her adoration for it sort of influenced mine. she loves it for all the obvious reasons, but her favourite thing is how Donna reunites with Rosie and Tanya, the way the three woman scream and holler and run towards each other, shoving each other around, bantering, and imperfectly performing their little Dynamos handshake. my mom says it makes her think of her own friends and how they interact (which i have witnessed firsthand) - women well into their forties and fifties wearied by world and age, but still possessing infinite zest and excitement to see each other and unabashedly screaming about it. if it weren't for the fact that i already love mamma mia on my own, my mom's reasons for loving it is enough reason for it to have a special place in my heart.
she also has many good words for Pierce Brosnan's performance. she knows it's not _good_ singing, but she finds it heartfelt and _full._ like the singing may not be good but the acting is still excellent. i also grew to unironically enjoy his singing - sometimes when i'm in the mood to feel things i would listen to the movie version of SOS, because _it makes me feel things._
(my mom likes to compare Brosnan's singing to poor Russell Crowe's performance of "Stars" in the Les Miserables movie - how Crowe's singing was good but was absolutely wooden in that solo.)
Even watching these few clips from the film with Donna's gang makes me miss those summers of sitting in the backyard while my aunts and mom were laughing away, losing their shit just from sitting in the sun, chatting, and drinking coronas together
P.s- my family did indeed have the mama mia dvd AND my sister got me the cd for my birthday the year it came out.
Why can’t these other men just enjoy things?
bad work day? mamma mia. stressful day? mamma mia soundtrack during the commute to work. bad weather? mamma mia.
the most comfort movie ever.
Constant dance parties at work; won't see that with the 500th marvel movie :P
On a more personal note, I didn't have much opinion on it before release, but went to see it with my gran and basically just cried (happily) through the majority of it.
Can confirm my mom had a copy of the DVD in our house and it will forever be one of my comfort movies.
Plus, the rewatchability is off the charts
The fact that I still listen to the soundtrack every week… I love mamma mia so much I just…. Wow. Tears in my eyes. Also you look amazing, blue eye shadow is giving island, giving greece
The sequel was an EVENT for my roommate and I, we snuck mini moscato in the theater and got drunk with all the moms there
Mamma Mia is such a classic, it’s just so iconic, you can’t help but love it
37:13 as a Greek thank you 🙏🏼 I've grown up in Greece watching this film and love everything about it, but I did often wonder where the Greeks were
my grandma had a copy of the dvd and i would insist on watching the movie every time i visited, which was often as she is only five mins away by car. this is such a comfort movie for me as well because i feel like me and my grandma really bonded over the movie as she loves abba and this movie has made me love their music too.
0:38 "October is the month of the witch, so the summer months are the season of Mamma Mia" this line is funny to me since I did a production of Mamma Mia, which actually closed on Halloween day
i had a mamma mia dvd and my sister and i would watch it nearly everyday as children. i still cry when i hear Slipping Through My Fingers
mamma mia is so personal to me. donna is literally my mom to the T, i grew up without my birth father, and my mom has always struggled with me growing up and going off on my own. slipping through my fingers is actually going to be my mother daughter dance song at my wedding someday
I love this vid, but (!) there isn't enough Amanda Seyfried appreciation...... she's perfect
I’ve watched Mamma Mia dozens of times with my mom, it’s definitely our favorite movie!
Looking back those were some of the best years of my life
I watched this film in the waiting room of the orthodontics. Definitely made that a lot more fun
Your makeup and costume are phenomenal the met gala could never
You can tell this movie was written by women like it portrays women how they actually are the amount of women who talk the way the three leads (the older ones) I know is astounding its really realistic and fun
I felt that this video went by in seconds. The subject, the analysis and your personality made this a treat to watch.
"Before Mamma Mia, there was war" that intro actually took me the fuck out
at one point donna says (regarding the hotel's problems) "don't think about it, let's have fun" and i think that's the most perfect quote to describe what this movie is
If internet culture of 2008 was the same as today, Mamma mia and Dark Knight would have been similar to Barbenheimmer
i went to see mamma mia with my parents to a fancy cinema festival in a park my city held when i was like, eight. convinced it changed the way my brain was wired forever, along with my parent's;
we owned the cd soundtrack and we put it on every roadtrip until it got messed up from use a few years ago, and then we added the whole thing to the family's roadtrip playlist on spotify. screaming the last chorus of the winner takes it all at high velocity down a highway is a tradition for us, i still cry with my mom to slipping through my fingers. we mostly don't speak english, yet we have the whole thing memorized!
we watch the movie every couple of years and think to ourselves that its truly one of the best movies ever made, it's one of my most fond memories of my life and im so thankful for it
Mamma Mia was released a year after I was born.
Finally I have been offered the chance to publicly brag about my Mamma Mia! DVD with bonus features and the fancy case jacket. Thank you 💌
I practically grew up watching mama mia.
ALSO my household and my friends ALL had the mamma mia dvd when I was growing up and I live in the US
my oldest memory is going into a passionate frenzy and making pages and pages of drawings of sophie and sky at age five as if meryl streep herself was holding a gun to my head and screaming abba lyrics in my ear to make me do it
My family and I have been watching this movie since it came out, we basically know every line and song, I genuinely don’t wanna believe anyone can hate it and I feel sorry for anyone who hasn’t seen it
I cannot explain how refreshing this video was, it did things to my heart! Off to rewatch Mamma Mia
It was filmed in Greece, actually, on the island of Skopelos. You're probably thinking of the sequel, which was indeed filmed in Croatia.
thank you for making a mamma mia breakdown video 🥰 about months ago i decided to watch mamma mia and the sequel and now i rewatched it for like 6 times already
I really really love this movie. Especially the Dinamos. I'm 22 and I can totally see myself as Donna, Tanya (Christine is my favorite) or Rosie. It's so fun and relatable ♡
Up to this day, my brother and I watch this movies and it's always the best time, just singing and dancing together. I'm glad I passed my great taste to him lol
I could watch and listen to you forever - I definitely have to watch the movie again (we have it at home, thankfully! 👀)! And your intelligent deep dive makes it so much better! 🌺
I remember when I was a kid, that I found the performance of „Lay All Your Love On Me“ so exciting - it was the first depiction of sexual desire in film I saw. And I think it already kind of shaped my wishes, which was heavily needed. I‘m glad I saw the duet scene before experiencing the ABBA song, because the associations are totally different.
Overall big thank you! 🥂🥂🌺🌺🌺🌊🌊🌊💖💖💖
1) we had the DVD. Still do
2) when we play the mamma Mia drinking game, it's a drink every time the Greek chorus pops up.
i've never watched you before (although i've been meaning to) but i liked this video the second i clicked on it! any lover of mamma mia is someone who is guaranteed to receive my support. i talk about mamma mia all the time and why it's my favourite film, and i love hearing people talking about it! this video was so well put together, thank you for talking about it!
mamma mia is definitely in my top 10 movies ever, it truly is amazing. whenever someone tells me that they don't like it, i just don't know what to say to them. i do have a mamma mia dvd, and i live in rural alaska
Yay!! I have been waiting for this video since you first posted about it. Literally going to rewatch Mamma Mia after this!!
I am so happy this video exists. Mamma Mia was my first DVD ever and a very important part of my childhood
I think everyone should watch this movie just for that-knowing you can still have fun, love, be youthful in spirit during your middle ages.
mamma mia is one of my favourite films, it never fails to make me feel better (and of course i own a dvd) ✨
my family still has our mamma mia dvd even though our dvd player broke YEARS ago. it's been the movie that has stayed at the top of my 'comfort films' list for as long as i can remember making it in the first place and there's a damn good reason for that.
This might simply be a reflection of the various places I've lived, but I don't think I've ever heard "daughter" enunciated this precisely.
I just discovered you yesterday and I have replayed this video 5 times already. You are my new comfort creator and this is my new comfort video (just like mamma Mia is my comfort movie!)💓💓💓
seldom have I've been more validated in my preferences than now
I watched this movie in Germany during a foreign exchange program when I was 17. :')
I grew up watching mama mia with my family countless times on CD and it remains my comfort movie!!!
I used to watch the dvd with my mom all the time we still have the dvd and watch it every once in a while.
A very wholesome time all around.
noone asked, everyone needed.
you made my day. ❤️
