I have studied buddhism for roughly half my life. At the age of eighty, it has become more difficult to walk on the treadmill and read at the same time. Your recordings have become a beautiful part of my study. Over the years I have turned to Huang Po countless times and considering him to be a kindly and patient grandfather. Your deliberate and carefully enunciated readings have forced me to slow down and really "hear" what my patient grandfather has been trying to say to me over all these years. Thank you.
Hi Jack, thanks for taking the time to connect and I am so pleased to read that you are finding the recordings helpful for your Dhamma practice. Yes, Huang Po is simply priceless - his pointers are so clear, and his words do indeed convey gentleness and kindness. It is interesting how just 'words' on a page (and then spoken) can actually convey so much about the Master and their proclivities, etc. This too along with them being translated make it all the more amazing. May the Master's words continue to bring you great joy, freedom, and Ultimate realisation. With all blessings, Jayasara 🙏
@@ganazby yes, Paul Hedderman is great, but his talks are almost overwhelming bc of the input he gives. All he says is founded on real insight, but damn he talks a lot and fast
I think Huang Po was very clear in presenting Zen ideas without beating around the bush. Your audio reading added another beautiful dimension to the text. Thank you.
For many years I have considered Huang Po to be my Teacher. Not one among many -though there are many I adore, but actually my Teacher as if he were in my presence as an active force. It constantly amazes me that words in a book, translated, written in the 9th century (which was a pretty good century of Buddhist Teachers,) carry the living presence of the Teacher. How incredible is that! Thanks so so much as always for the wonderful reading. You are so generous. You probably don't think of yourself that way, but everybody else does.
There was only one audio recording of this text available and the guy who made it took it down. This is such an immense gap you are filling with these recordings, thank you so much!
Dear Samaneri. This is a priceless video. You are doing very superb work. My teacher once said this to me, which goes along with Huang Po. "The story of Truth has been told repeatedly throughout the ages, but it bears telling again. Into the void-like space created by the ego’s realization that in actuality it knows nothing suddenly flows the love of God, like a dam that has been opened. It is as though Divinity had been waiting all these millennia for this final moment. In a moment of serene ecstasy, one is home at last. The Real is so overwhelmingly, obviously, and totally present that it seems incredulous that belief in any other kind of ‘reality’ is even possible. It is like some strange kind of forgetting, like the story of the Hindu god who willed himself to be a cow and then forgot that he had done it and had to be rescued by another of the gods. Sometimes the ego misidentifies itself more specifically as the personality. It thinks, “I am such-and-such a person.” And it says, “Well, that’s who I am.” From this illusion arises the fear that one will lose one’s personality if the ego is relinquished. This is feared as the death of ‘who I am’. By internal observation, one can differentiate that the personality is a system of learned responses and the persona is not the real ‘I’. The real ‘I’ lies behind and beyond it. One is the witness of that personality, and there is no reason one has to identify with it at all."
Dear Jayasāra, your readings have taken hold of me. They have reached me when I was ready for them. Tonight as I walked by the ocean in Port Fairy everything suddenly moved for me: radically. I don't think things will ever be the same again. Thankyou.
Thank you so very much! This was truly enlightening! May there be more like you spreading the Light in a world that often seems to be engulfed by darkness!!
30 years back a British expatriate named Maggie made a recording of Huang Poh s teachings. Quite a few of us were learning from Venerable Mahinda in Singapore Buddhist Mission during that period n some went on to become monks n nuns.
This has really convinced me that I’m drawn to Zen Buddhism. I’m a former catholic and I can tell you, ritual and performative practice are distractions and empty.
"Mind alone is the Radiant Jewel from which all things borrow their Temporal Reality." - Lama Anagarika Govinda (from "Foundations of Tibetan Mysticism").
I REPEATEDLY LISTEN TO THE FIRST FEW LINES OF THIS VIDEO. I think it is the summary of the whole teaching, of which other schools taught the same. Experiencing the ONE MiND is something else. Suggestion: Abide in the ONE MIND. 🙏🙏🙏
This Mind should be translated as Spirit. It is quite beyond thinking and thought. Thinking is the act of conditioning Spirit turning it into thought. Buddhahood is to directly intuit Spirit. But this also means leaving the duality of thinker and thought, observer and observed, knower and known. The state of Buddhahood (buddhatā) transcends all mentation. This is also Spirit which transcends the six senses and the five aggregates.
For some reason this video can't be downloaded for offline viewing on the YT app. It's the only one that keeps crashing consistently, I've tested 23 other videos to confirm
I take it to mean abandon the idea that you can realize awakening via concepts and thinking. It is NOT advocating abandoning concepts entirely, but simply to realize that conceptual thought is an impediment to realizing your Buddha nature.
