Being a 23 year mechanic, my advice to you would be, if you're idling your engine for several hours as your primary heat source, be sure to be doing oil changes every 3,000 miles, regardless of what your owners manual says. Also, stick to one oil brand. It's important that you do. Also, use a "CHEVRON fuel system and injection cleaner" in the fuel tank once a month. That's also very important with engines that idle a lot. Never ever put any sort of additive into the oil, no matter what the oil change place tells you....never, ever, ever! Oil only!! Sure would like to see you get a diesel heater installed into your car. Big rig mechanic shop is the best place for that sort of work. That's because most over the road trucks have diesel heaters in them to keep the driver warm while sleeping. It's also something you're gonna want if your car ever stops working when it's cold out. Cheers, and many nights of warmth to you.
@@illiniwood Thank you so much, that’s helpful!! I typically idle for 20 minutes or less. There is actually an anti-idling law in Massachusetts so when I’m set up I get nervous it will draw attention if my car is running for too long.. well that and I get concerned for my engine after a while, I want that baby to LAST! 😁
Just like a cute little hamster in its cage, getting ready for a nap on a nice cozy pile of straw. Lovely video Emma!! Great music selection and NICE Lotus hoodie too!!! 😃
I learned quickly while doing van life that even though it is cold, you have to leave a window cracked to help with the condensation. You can also buy DampRid to help with condensation. The odd thing is that it will make it feel warmer because condensation in the vehicle will make you feel colder.
@ ok good. When I first started I was in my car and I thought it was stupid to leave them cracked but it actually was better. How long do you plan to live in your car?
@ Sweet. I was just about to suggest some better options for heat so you are not running your vehicle. I just installed a diesel heater in my van (not as nice as a transit) and it is a game changer. I am in Ohio so I don’t think it is as cold as where you are.
@jamesyahn I actually don't run my car for heat. I don't use any heat source, just my covers and my body. I run the car before work, and after work, that's about it.

I have lived in my car prior to getting this apartment, but with rent going up every year and I’m just getting myself into more debt! I’m so ready for my journey !
For heat, get a small backpacking stove and pot, boil water and put it in a small nalgene bottle. (Or get your hot water from a McDonald's or gas station) Wrap the bottle in a marino wool sock and put it in your sleeping bag. Will stay warm all night.

I know you are finding ways to keep yourself safe but worry that some of these people will try to track you down. There's safety in numbers, but you know that. I’m considering moving out of my apartment and living in my SUV. I’m not concerned about space, but I am concerned about having a place to park, and what to do with my dog while I’m working. Here in New Hampshire, it seems like everything is private. Even the local Walmart doesn’t allow overnight parking.
I’ve slept in cold weather for 3 winters. If you have a spot for it SAFELY get a Camco Wave 3 heater. It’s why I have in my dodge caravan. Also mulberry silk long John’s keep your temp regulated when under covers. Be careful to make sure when running heat in your car you make sure it doesn’t snow so heavy it covers your exhaust pipe. Then you’re dead. Be careful. There’s also usb heating pads.

sleeping bag in a sleeping bag and make tent over your sleeping area, it will be 10 degrees warmer. eat before going to bed the calories will keep your body temp warmer. peace out
