    First off let me off state that this film touched me emotionally like no other horror short. Yes, there is a supernatural entity present, but this also seems to be an exploration of loneliness, isolation, and the quiet grief of aging without companionship. I seriously wanted to walk into this film, sit with this vulnerable, elderly lady, hold her hand and be her protector. Seeing elderly ladies living alone use to make me sad as a child and it breaks my heart as an adult. This film made me spend extra time with my own mother this week.

      Hi Karim, thank you so much for the kind comments. I wanted to make a horror that was a little different and my Nan was a real inspiration for this, i'm glad you saw past the supernatural elements and understood a little deeper.
      The fact that it made you spend extra time with your own mother is amazing, and i really couldn't ask for a better response!
      Again, thank you for watching and taking the time comment. I will pass on your comments to Dolly.

      Yes, I agree!!! So sad. I felt so bad for this elderly woman living all alone. I know some elderly people like their independence, however, the poor woman should not have been living all alone with her eyesight being bad and her having to use a walker. Very good film.

    My great grandmother is turning 91 this year. Fighting hard at work to be able to get time off to see her since she lives in the next state over. This short film really hits on one of my fears though. I already take meds for a deteriorating mind at 20, and I don't get along with most people. I can see this being me one way or another.

    • @MattSears
      @MattSears  7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      So sorry to hear. It's a story quite close to my heart and something that terrifies me too.
      Hopefully when we're 90 we'll have people better than Mick to look after us, and whilst we're on the topic i hope we don't see demonic children either!

    I consume a lot of horror, and I judge it not by what it does while I'm watching it, but how much it lingers afterword, and honestly this film has stayed with me as long or longer than any feature length film ever has, and you did it in under 13 minutes. You're a skilled storyteller, and you have a respect for the genre that eclipses most people making short horror. You've earned yourself a fan in me, man. Great job!

    • @MattSears
      @MattSears  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Thank you so much! That´s a massive compliment and it´s very much appreciated. I´m not a fan of cheap scares and gore, i need horror to be a bit more than that, so I just try to make horror films which would move me or scare me, and hopefully it will do the same for others.
      When making a film you often become quite removed so it´s difficult to tell if it´s hit it´s mark. So thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!

    i'm not exactly sure what the ending means, but i think the woman actually made a companion from the boy. at the beginning, she asks if he wants tea, and then finds the teacup in the house. then at the end she's still alive (unlike the annoying guy) and she leaves tea outside, where she first saw him. either she's inviting him to come over or she just leaves it out there for him. i think that it's symbolizing how she was alone and everyone seemed to be bothered by her, so now she has this strange friend. idk if that's right but that's what i got ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To be so very vulnerable - physically and visually - and also be alone with no one who cares about your safety or wellbeing is a fate of so many of us who are elderly and/or disabled. This also reminds me of my grandfather who passed away almost 2 years ago. I was with him when he passed. He had so much wisdom and experience; it was so awesome to listen to him talk about his experiences. He was a living history book, and remembered small details like no one I've ever met. He also was nearly blind, and I used to like to sit with him and "watch" movies together and I'd paint the picture of what was happening on screen. He lived alone up until the last 2 years of his life, but was a 3 minute drive away from my parents' house. We took good care of him and let him have his dignity and independence. He had a great sense of humor, and he was also scared quite often, but one of us was always there for him when he needed us. He had a hard life growing up, so he wasn't always the kindest person, but we did right by him regardless. I miss him a lot. I mainly miss his laugh. Sometimes we'd be sitting around the table and all of a sudden he'd start silent laughing and then slowly work up into a big chuckle and it would take forever for him to compose himself and tell us what it was that he remembered that was so funny. Cracked me up so much.
    August 12th will be 2 years since he passed. I hope he's somewhere, and living in joy and peace.

      That's lovely, he sounds like a great guy! One of the best things to come out of this film is all the responses of people saying that they visit their grandparents more because of watching the film.
      The lady in the film is my grandmother and she was incredible filming this, being 95 and nearly blind it was really difficult for her at times but she put in a hell of a shift and she really did steal the show. Everyone show's such great empathy towards her.

    Wow! This hits like a sledge hammer! My elderly father is deep in the throes of dementia and all he has is me. When I get him calmed and finally into bed, late at night I realize that when my time comes, I won't have anybody. This film really gets to it. Our (American) elderly have no one if not family. My father is scared and confused all the time. He believes there are many people in his room with him. (There are none.) Very well performed. And written, too. Thank you to everyone for this.

      Thank you for the comment and i'm very sorry to hear about your father. it's something that is quite close to me and something i didn't feel had really been explored. It's amazing how many people this film resonates with and probably the best thing to ever come from it is the comments of people who said that it's made them appreciate their grandparents more and visit them etc.
      The leading lady is actually my grandmother and suffered from the condition. Luckily she has us and is quite happy but it must be terrifying to experience these things alone.
      I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'll pass on your comments to my Nan!

    • @MattSears
      @MattSears  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's really sad, probably one of the best things to have come from making this film is the amount of people saying that they called their grandparents straight after, or made sure they went to visit the next day!
      It's a scary thought that one day we will grow old, but its an even scarier thought to be old and alone.

    • @MattSears
      @MattSears  8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That's awesome thanks man! It's really hard to find an audience for a film, I find it way harder getting people to see my films than actually making them haha.
      Mick was killed so that now Dolly (the Mum) is now completely alone, and the idea was that at the end when the clock strikes 10:52 and she puts out the teacup, it's like an offering to stop the entity from coming back. Then we leave it on a cliffhanger as she waits to see if it returns.
      If it does then she has to re-live this nightmare all over and completely alone, with not even her son, or a panic button to turn to.
      Thanks for watching and the kind comments. :)

    This is the best horror film I've ever seen. What makes it so special, is that it's REAL. People suffering from this syndrome go through hell every single day. This deeply saddened me. It reminded me of my own mother who now lives alone. Although I see her most every day, there are moments when she is alone. Although this was a horror of sorts, it also relayed a deeper message, that loneliness within the elderly can be a killer. I felt that the 'creature' at the end - and even the vision of the 'boy' were metaphors of her loneliness. Well done on a wonderful piece here.

      Because she never saw Mick die she still can't tell if 'it' was all real or not. So the next time she is alone and the clock strikes the same time as before she pours a cup of tea and leaves it outside as a peace offering, trying to appease the ghost/demon and stop it from happening again.

    That touched off so many emotions for me. What excellent acting, writing and directing. It reminds me, in a way, of Hereditary, it scared the hell out of me while making me feel empathetic and sad at the same time. Not easy to do and rarely can a full length horror movie pull it off, kudos to the makers for achieving this and more in such a short film. With so many elderly now outnumbering the young in so many places, this is a realistic, scary, melancholy comment on the fear, loneliness, sadness and confusion that can come with age. Bravo! 💜🙏💜

    That was incredibly impactful. Sadly, this is the reality for many elderly people, and it’s heartbreaking to witness. The mind is a powerful force, capable of playing tricks on us-making us see, hear, and feel things that aren’t real. This film brilliantly taps into that, challenging our perception of reality and forcing us to confront the complexities of life and how it shapes us in the end. Bravo to you Mr. Sears for yet another brilliant production!

    This is very well done! The actress did an incredible job - very believable. I’m hoping that there is a deeper meaning other than to make people jump - which it did a fine job of doing. I’m hoping that you are actually trying to shed some light on the horror of being physically (including visually) handicapped and vulnerable and being alone - with no one who cares about you or wellbeing. It is not only family who neglects and abandons the elderly and disabled, it is also society as a whole. I speak from experience that the reality of loneliness can be as great a horror as anything created in a horror movie. With that being said, again, I think you did a wonderful job!

      @MattSears  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! Glad you like the films. I'm not a fan of those types of films either. I much prefer trying to create a scary atmosphere rather than thinking of how i can make people jump or vomit haha.

    • @CorruptedStudios1
      @CorruptedStudios1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly! And I feel like it's become a huge problem, especially lately. Horror movies have become far too predicable. I understand that all genres of horror have masses of films, so it's hard to do something original, but I feel like most directors use it as an excuse and put little to no effort in building an atmosphere, instead thinking throwing in jump scares and lots of gore with scary music playing it will be enough to satisfy the masses. Like my friend and I took her sister to see Mama and it was so bland and predictable, I could literally guess what kind of jump scare would happen before it did. It made most of the audience jump and scream, which makes me a little sad to know such muddled efforts apparently work.
      But what I love about your stuff is while following these already explored genres, you find a way to build up to it in an amazing and new way. Especially this piece. The vulnerability of this old woman, the voices, the uncertainty, it really strikes a chord deep inside more than any tactless way to make people jump. It's so unsettling and so dang refreshing. Your work is a breath of fresh air in this genre and I hope you keep on making them, and I would love to see one of your feature films in a theater someday. I love how much obvious effort and thought and love you put into your stuff, and how you take the time to shake the viewer's senses and nerves. You have a fan in me

    • @MattSears
      @MattSears  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm always working on new films, I did have a few other shorts planned but i've put them on hold to work on writing for a feature so fingers crossed some day I can get it into theatres! I really want to film another short soon though.
      Yeah i saw Mama, i thought it was ok. Definitely not as scary as the short film though and i know what you mean about the jump scares. Don't get me wrong I do like a good shocking moment but only when it's been built up to. I think a lot of filmmakers just throw them in there as a cheap way of frightening people. Of course i you throw in a really loud noise and a sudden movement people will jump, It's not scary though, just kinda annoying ha.

    8:48 - What a nightmare to be so vulnerable and have no one care that you are scared and possibly in danger. Her sweet requests for help are met with frustration and contempt. She may have accidentally cried wolf many times in the past, wearing on the man’s patience. But, none the less, she’s scared now and deserves to be treated kindly. Being helpless, alone, and afraid, potentially every night for the rest of your life (whether real or perceived) is a great horror. I fear growing old for this very reason.

    My grandma with macular degeneration is starting to get mild symptoms like the ones that comprise Charles bonnet syndrome. It's really sad to see cause she's always been such an active and energetic person and as the damage caused by age progresses in it's severity she only seems to feel more and more defeated. I do my best to give her her independence, but there are things she simply needs help with and it hurts me to see her face when she realizes that she simply can't lift said box, read this text, understand that image, etc. I can't imagine someone having to go through that alone. Let alone with some freaky dude haunting her there...

    Thank you for employing Ms Beatrice Howard. She did such wonderful acting whether she really was that age and still killing it in films or she was younger and fooling us with her "physical limits" Also, thank you for not offing her. Lol. I cringed and thought to myself "No one should be tripped on the 1yd line of life". Thanks again for a great short.

      Ms Beatrice Howard did an amazing job, she's actually my grandmother. She was 93 at the time of filming and we shot around her physical limitations. I know it must have been really hard for her but she really gave her all and i couldn't be more proud and grateful. She really steals the show!
      Thanks for taking the time to watch and i'll pass on your kind message to Dolly.

    This absolutely terrified me but I felt more, I felt the fear of the insanity me myself could build up in 80 years, having nobody, losing everyone, this touched and burned me inside out.

      Thank you! It really is a terrifying prospect and sadly so many have to face.
