Hey I built my first PC the other day and followed BitWits PC building tutorial, then I followed PaulsHardware's PC setup tutorial for basic system configuration and Windows 10 tweaks. Finally I want to thank you because I followed your videos on overclocking when I overclocked my RAM and my GPU, I also watched this video for the 2700x but since I'm running the Wraith Prism I decided to just let it do its own thing and it seems to sit at around 4.2Ghz average when it's bouncing the load between the cores. Your videos were very helpful and I just wanted to let you all know that I appreciate that you all make so many specialized tutorials to build a resource ecosystem that makes approaching the task of PC building much more friendly than if I was left going in blind with just the components manuals. I really do wish you all the best of luck. Don't worry about the haters either, there's nothing wrong with using the parts you get to build PC's for your friends and family.
Good Job on your build. Swap out that cooler though.

2700x Stock 3200Mhz RAM - 1826

2700x 4.15Ghz 3200Mhz RAM- 1892 Max temp stock air cooler 72*
Bios untouched besides RAM bump. I run it at 3200Mhz with timings improved for my daily use. Runs great! Beyond happy with Ryzen. Came from a 7700k and it was a awesome improvement with the extra cores and threads. Gaming is about the same and workloads is far improved.
Loving the 2700x over my old 7700k for multitasking/streaming/gaming. W10 on "AMD Balanced" mode in Windows settings. If I could get 4000Mhz stable she'd push well into that 1950ish mark.

I'm excited but i must admit I'm gutting out my out HP pavilion ATX case which came with a super reliable Athlon 64 processor...(love that thing)and I'm going to hopefully build a ryzen 7 2700x build in it for gaming and watching blu- rays on my home theatre in thee ole mancave!...i have to admit you guys are pretty awesome and you've got me excited as hell...do you have an affordable ATX form motherboard in mind any help is a great help an very much appreciated!...thanks in advance guys!
Exactly what model of RAM are you using? My corsair 3200 won't even go to 2400Mhz.
This video serves as an OC guide for newbies as well (i.e. how to push limits incrementally), amazing job Jay!
The important part is do it in small increments... This way you will see the moment you went to far, then you don't have to figure out what a safe OC is... You would just have to step things back to the last test run.
Just make sure to run intel burn test for a few hours when you're done to verify the results
if that fails, back it down 1x
why would u oc the 2000 series tho, they already boost by themselves
Brandon Chelsea The CPU does not "boost" itself, it is all software controlled. The issue with the auto overclock is that it normally only boost one of the cores. Which is can be unstable, and not great for tasks that need more then one core. Manual overclock allows you to raise the performance of all the cores uniformly. Which makes multi cores tasks better then the stock OC settings. Plus when gaming you get more stable frame rates, when rendering videos you get better performance (lower times). Hope this clears up the confusion a little. There is more to it, this was just a simplified explanation.
Some may even overclock their RGB strips, so why not :D

Frankly part on the blame goes on AMD for implementing something called "game mode" and then having it reduce performance in most of the cases. Get rid of the functionality or call it something else to avoid confusion.
@@C3lloman They clearly stated that mode is SOLELY for Threadripper that has ridonculous number of cores that are not even close to being utilized in 99% of the games, and it does NOTHING for the Ryzen CPUs but butcher their performance (Ryzen 7 becomes Ryzen 3). The only other thing they could have done was make a hardware limitation inside the utility, but that is completely unnecessary as long as the user CAN FCKIN READ!!!!!!!! That feature wasn't USED, it was ABUSED, maliciously and with intent to cripple the scores...
kumbandit I agree with C3llo, it was just a bad decision to call it that on their part. They could’ve easily have called it Ripper mode, which would’ve been more accurate and overall would’ve been much better marketing. With a single word, as an average consumer, you’d know who it was for and what would happen to your cpu performance if you didn’t have a threadripper.

I feel ya. Except I have a Celeron N2840 at 2.4GHz I believe? Only 2gb of LPDDR3 RAM at 1600MHz. Using laptop and lags when playing Minecraft.

Just to share my cinebench scores, 8700k (stock)=1465pts. 5GHz=1653pts. 5.2GHz= 1693pts. 5.3GHz= 1717pts. 5.3 is the fastest I can push my chip, even then it doesn't match Ryzen in cinebench, impressive from AMD.
in multicore applications , now test single core
the stock fx 8350 matches the 7700k in multicore cinebench as well
you are also comparing 6c12t to 8c16t
divide that result by cores and you end up with intel 122 , amd 118
Cmdr Flint ryzen has 8 cores/16 threads and 8700k only 6/12 that's why
But that's multicore score, right? Your 8700k has less cores and threads than the 2700X that Jay is showing off here. Try single core, and you might see better scores from the 8700k, or at least see it even out with Ryzen.
I agree, though, AMD is definitely continuing to put pressure on Intel. Hope this continues over the next few years.

Great video! I'm a first time builder, and have never messed with any BIOS settings before. After building my first PC, of course I'm already trying to overclock it. It has the problem with all overclocking, you get results for the sake of getting results, then to actually run the pc in the real world it needs to be calmed down some.

There's sadly a really low number of AMD "OC" videos even now, I suspect that is partly to do with how both complicated and little improving it is even to try and tune AMD CPUs. Or so it feels like.

@@minky2395 I know this is old but I got this CPU and I went yesterday from stock cooler to the H115i Pro XT and I'll make the same 4,3ghz OC he did to see if it works well :P
1,5v sounds like a lot but I only play on the weekends so it shouldn't be an issue.
Right now, at 4,2ghz 1,475v it goes to 63° os package temp to I think 4,3ghz at 1,5v should be good.

Iv'e been out of the pc building game for years and wow how things have changed. I love it. The capability for a pc builder and super user has grown exponentially. GREAT video. Need to start overclocking my 1900x and RAM.
A BIOS update alone made a big difference for my Ryzen 1700. Was still running an shortly-after-release-day BIOS until a week ago, update to the latest version dropped Premiere render times by about 10%. Activating DOCP to get the 3000 MHz on the 32 GB RAM carved of another 10%. Cinebench sits at 1336 now. Probably should get a better cooler and take a look at the CPU speed next, that is still set to stock speed.
Yeah you definitely need to OC that thing. My 1700 at 3.9GHz does about 1730 in cinebench.
I need better ram I have 2400mhz ram and a 4.0 1700x and my cinebench is 1486
Though I did screw around with my ram for the past few minutes and push a slight voltage based oc and get a score of 1509
Now to see what a bios update does for me
Ouch, yeah. I'm running 3200MHz CL14 G.SKILL Trident-Z. I bought over a year ago when it was around $150. Same kit now is $220+.
CJRhoades I'm running 2×16 2400 cl16 ram but I managed to get it to 2666 and cl 14 with a slight voltage bump
So with a bios update I got up to 1730 but I was also on 2.3 and went all the way to 3.3 so mightve had a few performance bumps
Ended out with
1700x 4.0 ghz 1.38125 voltage
2400mhz 32gb ram at cl13 1.3 volts
An average score of 1724 across 6 runs

For the first time in many years I'm thinking next upgrade will be AMD. As many times as Intel has pissed me off I have never had the confidence to switch. What with my cad stuff and cnc work it is not a simple email and facebook type load.
scarmenl go for it, there's really no problems running the new Ryzen CPUs compared to Intel now. Stability and performance is great.

Brian Lucas , haha im in the same boat. But i built mine back in 2009. The learning curve of figuring out the just the right components with the new nvme ssd's and b die dimms to pair with the x470 mobo has been a tiring one. Good luck
not really that difficult.. especially nowadays. if anyone is unsure, be sure to check the vendor compatibility lists from the different motherboard manufactures. however, if getting a new x470 board, you should be good with whatever you purchase. having said that, one thing that is for sure, Ryzen 1st gen and 2nd gen both LOVE samsung B-die ram kits. this basically means you're spending $200ish for 16gb ram at 3200 frequency.
running ryzen 5 1600 with a stable 4.0ghz oc, going from 16gb 3000 frequency hynix die ram kit to 16bg 3200 samsung b-die increased my cinebench r15 score from 1260ish to 1330ish. and this is on a B350 board. i'm seriously giving thought to the 2700x and Aorus gaming 5 board because of the heat sink pipe thingy by the VRM's. i do gaming and alot of programming heavy workloads here so the value is here for me

Ill get my Ryzen 2700x tomorrow. Its the first time for me since the Athlon XP came out. After the Core 2 Duo came out, Intel ruled the world for more than 1 decade.

I know this upload is a bit old now but its by far my favorite 2700X overclocking vid. Super easy to follow and really helped me make an educated CPU purchase decision.
Exactly the reason why I prefer Jay's OC benchmark results cause he actually uses what people would use for overclocking. Instead what I've seen certain other tech-tubers do and try to overclock Ryzen 2700X up to 4.3GHz on the stock cooler and then wonder why they can't get it stable, then say oh I must have gotten a bad binned chip. Like really guys?
While at the same time they are using 360mm custom loop on a on a delided 8700k hitting 90C and going like "Yeah this is totally leggit 5.2Ghz that everyone can do", and just use it as a baseline.
Vanlonja exactly how about we take the 8700k and overclock it with an Intel stock heat fan. Oh wait it doesn't have one? How much is it really to get one from someone like really? Now let's see you get that 5.2ghz OC on the 8700k. Like if your going to use the 8700k as a baselime use it as the base line only at it's stock configuration if you are going to compare an AMD Ryzen Processor with it's stock heatsink. At least AMD provides you with decent cooling out of the box and you don't have to spend an extra $50-$70 for a cooler that can handle the Intel processors.

I have fond memories of overclocking video cards with custom bioses. One of which was me bricking one of my cards and then bringing it back.

Bios slightly tweaked: BCLK set to manual @ 100, VCore set to manual @ 1,27 volt with 41 multiplier, VCore set to manual @ 1,29 volt with 42 multiplier, load line set to manual @ high. I have just built this system last week, i used to be an Intel adept, i now have to gain the knowledge of AMD systems to push the max out of it, so please dont judge these figures to harshly.

2 x GTX970 EVGA SSC in SLI under custom built waterloop (EK blocks and radiator, Innovatek pump) with Noctua NF-A14 fan on radiator (blowing out) and 2 Noctua NF-B9 fans blowing on to the VRM and RAM heatsinks (GPUs + RAM are heavily overclocked, waterblocks only cool the GPUs, copper heatsinks are glued to the VRM mosfets and RAM chips to keep them cool)
Case: Coolermaster Haf XM mid tower ( i know, its an oldy)
Casefans: Coolermaster 200 mm + Noctua NF-A14 blowing in from the front (radiator fans are blowing out, the Noctua 140 mm on GPU radiator blows out from the back and the two Enermax 140 mm on the CPU AIO blow out from the top of the case)

@@NP23335 basically undervolt the cpu so the temps are lower and supposedly the turbo mode (or precision boost im guessing) will go faster due to lower temps

I just built my Ryzen 7 2700x system about a month ago and I bought Corsair RGB RAM rated at 3000MHz and I didn't realize that DDR4 was base set at 2133MHz. I had so much trouble figuring it out but I eventually did. I had watched this video around the time Zen 2 came out and I just now rewatched it and wish I had paid closer attention the first time. It would have saved me a ton of time. Great video Jay. I love the knowledge that you share.

Im waiting for b450 boards to release will be pairing that with a 2600x, problem is I can do only 2x8gb 2400mhz cuz prices are high. Can I overclock the ram up its rated speed?? Capacity is more important cuz I do premiere and photoshop often. Thanks
start with 3200Mhz 17-19-19-19-38CL 1.36v for your ram and run prime 95 1 hour. I oc my 2x8gb 3200Mhz 16-18-18-18-36CL 1.345v to 3200Mhz 15-16-16-16-28CL 1.36v and I run prime 95 1 hour and played games after = stable jumped from 109% to 112% score in Userbenchmark.
You can get the frequencies up by taking latencies higher.
you could use one of those clip on ram fan kits even then its a risk adding a ghz to ram speed in youre case that is over 30%!

Did you end up OC'ing ram and/or your CPU? I'm just about to build a b450m with 2600x with 3200MHz ram and wondered how likely is to make ram go higher than 3.2GHz.

This was worth the couple of days wait. None of the other “mainstream tech-tubers” are doing this, a sit-down, OCing session of the new Ryzen 2nd gen, with the exception of GN. But still not a sit-down like Jay is doing. His channel has filled the gap of what others seem to glance over, valuing faster production over better quality. Thank you Jay. Thank you. I think its still "illegal" its not "legal" in the since that weed is in CA. They dropped the charges from felonies to misdemeanors IIRC so basically the same as a speeding ticket.

Kamran Aslam it's pretty much the same. All you need to do is to take care that the temps don't go above 75 (this is personal preference but 70-80 is the norm for load temps) and that everything runs smoothly without crashing in between.
Your stock load temps are around my idle temps apparently. Need to check my thermal paste. But then again, you used a 360mm AIO, so that plays into it, since I have a 280mm AIO.

@@tanasirobert9157 my electrical engineer brother who uses the same thermal compound for various applications, all of which get to Temps very similar to your cpu and GPU. After 3-6 months of continuous use its performance starts to degrade. It's not as important here as it is for his job, but with the cost of a tube of thermal compound, there's no reason not to tear down your pc a bit, replace your thermal compound, and clean up your pc from dust or whatever else might be in there. That's only 2-4 times per year. You take care of your body, and your car, take care of your pc.

Great video. Helped a lot with getting to know the Zen bios settings compared to the old FX line i learned to OC on.
I'm hoping you can do another video covering some more advanced overclocking techniques. In my tests i've gotten much better results when setting all the RAM settings manually, using LLC to keep available voltage consistent for all cores, and significantly lowering the vcore when compared to the auto voltage numbers. It would be great to see how you interpret and eliminate tempurature spikes at idle, and other fine tune adjustments that you have had success with in the past, with how they apply to these newer, more user friendly bios systems. My system specs and scores:

South Sider2005 dude sitting at 1.31 volts and like 1.34 for my dram to trigger at 3200 and it’s hitting 4.0 plus easy. If only messing with Vega was as easy.

I must admit I was very skeptic switching from Intel to AMD. but after seeing some really super reviews on the Ryzen 2700x. I decided to give it try.
I almost ordered an Intel Core i7-9700K. (which is 130$ more than Ryzen 2700x.
I hope I did not screw up and made the right choice.

Can you revisit this 2700X doing a BCLK OC? I've seen some good results from just a 103-104 BCLK and leaving the stock boost mechanisms enabled. There are side some side effects if you use some other PCIe cards in the system but should be fine with a single DGPU and a BCLK OC. Also it would be good to see if there are any significant FPS gains to be had with this OC and then a BCLK OC config or if it is mainly productivity load performance gains. This is a great video either way, thanks Jay.
I wasn't able to find R15 but I did dl the Cinebench R20 from the Microsoft Store and here are my results:
Setup:

CPU - AMD 2700x (Stock Wraith Prism cooler)
RAM - GSkill Trident 16Gb x 2 DDR4-3000mhz CL 14-14-14-34
GPU - MSI GTX1070 Gaming X
All I've done to OC the CPU and the RAM is use the Auto features in the Tomahawk's BIOS and I've slightly OC'd the GPU using Afterburner but that's it and all cooling is stock air coolers and a few case fans. I'm not sure if this score is good/bad, or if the scoring/testing differs between R15 and R20, nor do I know how it stacks up against other's setups?... but here are my results:

My 2700X with G.Skill Trident RGB 3200Mhz is at 1811 in Cinebench running at 4.1Ghz with the memory at 3333Mhz. My stock clock was at 1782. I got a damn good chip I must say.

Crazy im completely stock 2700x at 3.7ghz and have 1780 so we are pretty much bang on the same stock
your chip must be pretty bad with that score, my max score on the 2700 non x is 1859 at 4.1ghz and overclocked 2800mhz ram 16gb, your stock speed is pretty good, but dont forget you can try to overclock your 2700x to 4.3 or 4.5ghz if you have anything other and better than the stock cooler

I have not tweaked timings or anything else yet, so better scores to come. Also, made a mistake, my memory is at 3233 on 3200 memory. My score is actually pretty good and above normal for sure. If you are getting higher scores, you definately have a great chip. My dad played around with my setup while I was gone and hit almost 2000 score, but reset everything until we get free time to mess around with it again.
Although I'm no longer on the AMD platform I still had to like and comment on this video. The very first video of yours I'd watched was your guide to overclocking the 8350. I watched in in preparation for possibly joining the PCMR. THAT video and Tek Syndicate's review convinced be to jump in.

memory overclocked 200mhz from 3200mhz to 3433mhz and memory voltage increased from 1.2v to 1.4v. nothing else touched.

I scored comparebale figures! With same mobo (Gigabyte X470 Gaming 7), same cpu (2700x), default bios and amd settings, little overclock on RAM: set to 3466 Mhz @ 1,35 volt. My best score with Cinebench R15 was 1785 out of 3, the lowest was 1777. What RAM do you use? I have GSkill FlareX 2x8 Gb CL16 (3200 Mhz). The FlareX CL14 costs 65 Euros more (80 US Dollars) and this second gen Ryzen is less sensitive to tight RAM latency timings so i bought the CL16 RAM instead of the CL14. My Thumbs Up to you for using an air cooler!!!!

My RAM is specified for 3200@16-18-18-36 but I can't get it stable with the XMP profile on my board for some reason. Find it interesting to hit same results as in video despite running it at 2933 instead of 3400 or 3600. Tight CAS, RAS to CAS, and RAS Precharge seems to have a big impact, indeed.

Ryzen 2 is a huge improvement in some scenarios and it beats 8700k in some games.AMD is back and the best thing is that ryzen 2 is not even a new architecture yet!

Ryzen 2 does beat Intel in some games. In 2020 when 7nm Ryzen is released the competition will be identical between Intel and AMD as we ALL know that the node process will cause a halt in performance. There will only be about a 1% difference in between Coffeelake and Ryzen in 2020. Once 5nm is produced there won't be any thing left in performance gains. I would bet by this time Intel will be producing nodes at global foundries if not buying them out completely simply because Intel won't be able to compete at the price point. Ryzen will out sell Intel next year or by the end of this year and hasn't been done in nearly a decade?

Lucky dogs. My 1600 non x on a clc 240 is at 1.37 volts and won't go past 3.8ghz. 1.4 volts it won't even hit 3.9
My “old” 1600 at 3.95 1.34. Sc 165 mc 1311. Memory was cl 14 3000. The 1400 i had at 3.9 1.36 sc 157 mc 840 but with 2666 mem oc to 2933 cl 16.
1700@4.0ghz vcore 1.375 with 2933mhz vengeance lpx cinebench score is 1768. Single core score is 164. The new Ryzen is 176 single core with the 2700x. A good jump in IPC. A 3 percent increase is something but when it's on all 8 cores it is something.

Go into the bios and enable precision boost overdrive and dont touch anything else. Best temps and single core performance guaranteed.

Good review and walkthrough sir. Noted I lapped my intel 2600k that was stuck at 4.7Ghz on water and after lapping it I've been 5ghz for 7 years now. Also noted my ram is clocked at 2400mhz. If that CPU isnt a test sample but yours you will be shocked on the heat transfer and the new raised clock speeds.
