It's so simple: Mr. Weckl was, is and will be the NR.1! And the chemistry between Weckl, Corea and Patitucci was something special from 1986 till now.......
Imagine mastering an instrument. Then imagine playing with two other people who are masters at their instruments. Then imagine mastering playing with those two other people that have mastered their instruments. That's what we're watching every time Weckl, Corea, and Patitucci jam together and it's one of the most amazing things this planet offers (waffles being another one of those mystical things).
To all the drummers who know the feeling of just enjoying drumming, can you sense the joy that Dave has every time you watch him live or on video. He is truly amazing.
I used to hang w/ DW when he lived north of NY City and played in a sort of hip ‘smooth jazz’ band called Nite Sprite. He then started gigging then with a small personal PA system, 15” speaker placed right behind his head, mics on everything, a touch of reverb & EQ, and it sounded like a flawless studio drum sound - in a bar. He said it was to be able to hear himself. This was something totally new and different. I believe Gary Chester was encouraging him to do this, partly. Anyway, he sounded great back then at age 22 or whatever but sounds better than EVER now. Yeah Dave!
That's cool man! Better Nite Sprite, than morning sprite (pun intended 🙄😆) both make great song titles I think.. I Dig that band name, DW is a mighty fine "Master"of his trade. From my experience, he's a cool, friendly guy as well!" He's got a smoove groove and knows how to stay relaxed when he move!!!)
I was fortunate enough to see buddy rich play and he played solid in the pocket etc but Dave Weckl is a great drummer and he stays in the pocket no matter where the song goes he plays great no doubt about it
About 10 years ago , I was building part of , what was the drum showroom at Yamaha in n Hollywood . Part of my payment was a massive oak custom kit . 26" kick , 15" rack , 18" floor , 61/2 copper snare ....big kit . I came in to work on the snare drum room that day , my kit had been delivered and set up in the showroom , Weckl came in and saw it and said " whoa !" And proceeded to sit down and start tapping . I came out of the snare room and said " this is a 2 and 4 kit , not for overplayers ! " he almost fell over laughing ! He's a great guy , very humble and a monster player . That's my brush with greatness , I can go back to the shadows now......
Mark ODay wow , small world . I used to be in a rockabilly band with Keith in the late 80s , we've been friends ever since . Did some blues gigs later on , look up Keith Wyatt / Kim Conrad on here ( TH-cam ) you'll see us ruining some old tune !
Bill Perri yes it was , plus I had my pick of cymbals from all the cymbals that were sent to Yamaha for the showroom , SCORE!!! , paiste 2002 , zildjian K , new beat , it was a drummer wet dream !
Dave Weckl is soooooooo great!!! His soloing is imaginable, artistic, shows spectacular articulation, superbly musical and, well, just freaking amazing!! What drummer alive today is better??
I remember early 90s the jealousy of local jazzers they just didn't rise to this level of musicianship It was jealousy and untrue I lived thru that BS it was wrong and tbh offensive
Seeing Chick and John watch his solo is such a great moment. Such mutual respect, and you can almost see in their eyes the past and present of their musical journeys together. May we all be lucky enough to find musicians that understand us as well as these guys understand each other. 👌
My favorite trio hands down since 1985 Being a drummer myself from Newyork and been following my favorite drummer Dave Weckl ever since Hes a shining star out in the drum world He is a gift and an innovator of melodic playing which influenced me so much His mind is of genius almost along with Chic and John my favorite orchestra !!!!
I saw in 1989 the electrik band live in Rome (striped tent), it was the tour of Eye of The Beholder ... Korea, Gambale, Weckl, Patitucci and Marienthal ... one of the most beautiful concerts I have ever seen: 5 monsters in a stellar performance ... RIP Chick and thanks for your great music !
Saw Electrik band at NYC Bottom line in early 90's. Gamble, John P. Weckl, Marienthal. Was a great performance. Eye of the Beholder one of the best albums ever.
Was lucky to see him once in jazz club, meet him backstage after the show, i was so stunned all could say was fantastic, and he signed me a stick. wow :)
Hard to recon with that Chick Corea is no longer with us yet able to perform at the high level he did to his end. And Dave Weckl and John… such incredible artists along with Chick on their instruments.
I love seeing master technicians like Weckl pull magic out of a small kit. Thanks for posting this! It's inspirational to those of us who don't have $10000 invested in our equipment
...such a great shot at 10:00 -- two masters enjoying the work of another... Saw them in '04...stood 20-feet from Chick & his piano... one of the greatest memories of my life!
I've been playing drumzz for many years now, and i've seen every great drummer both live and on youtube. I can say this without a doubt, the hardest drummer to figure out is Dave Weckl. His ideas and timings not to mention his creativity is on another level. I'm stunned by what this man can do, it seems like he has no limits on what he can play. I'm not sure any drummer that ever lived can play the things Dave can.and he keeps getting better. Yeah and that includes Buddy, Tony, Billy, Thomas ,and Dennis.
its great to watch some grow in their ability on an instrument, and to see them mature over they years both musically and physically. I remember weckl in the 80s with his urban mullet.
I saw Dave weckel three different times in St Louis once was at the now defunct Mississippi nights he played with the Kennedy brothers that was the best show I've ever seen what talent those three had together that would have been back in the '90s
There are very few in the past or in this time that can play like Dave. The technique, timing and interpretation of the music is unreal...I think I figured out why he is so good....he has 3 arms...
When the first Acoustic band album came out Dave Weckl sounded great, but now that he's made the changes to his playing; he sounds far more like an out and out Jazz player whilst retaining his old FIRE....one can only imagine the hard work he did on his playing in order to transform into Weckl 4.0 GREAT STUFF....
Who are these guys? Man, they play like they've known each other for years....In all seriousness, I’ve enjoyed watching Weckl go from this long-haired pyrotechnic fusion chops-machine in the 90’s to this laid back swinging kind of guy on a normal kit. He’s really settled into a nice mature place - and in the drum-legend history books.
Peart was once in a audience surrounded by other drum giants and he started that Dave took everyone there back to school, tremendous his abilities were
i think around 7:00 to the end Dave went to another universe...his band mates who moved in closer i think felt same...nice to see him playing so loose and all feel....just wonderful.
I totally agree with that! He has that similar inspirational greatness in his playing. Of course at the same time being totally different. Rich was the epitome of speed and power. Weckl is the epitome Of creativity and smoothness
Hi “ to All” - may I comment ‘ - as being a drummer , all my life , i must say - I would not dare “ to get on stage after those ( Solos etc , what a FANTASTIC * drummer “ ,& I’ve seen. Lots in my. Lifetime ,=. Cheers to All on stage etc .
Quando vejo Dave Weckl tocando, com todo o meu respeito aos maiores do mundo, atuais e remotos, não consigo aquipará-los a esse Mestre dos timbres e essa musicalidade sem limites!
Dave’s playing is the pinnacle of how a musician develops with every idea flowing into anther to make a seamless whole; truly inspirational
40 years watching Weckl and still no clue what he's doing. The man is an alien.
Dave, Chick and John are just from a musical planet that few of us can even comprehend.
Dave Weckl is one of the finest drummers with such feeling into his playing. Professionalism at its best.
Of all the incredible drummers I admire, and there are so many, Dave is one of my all-time favorites...
His work w/ the GRP big band, which also included John Patitucci, was , needless to say, a masterclass on record!
His work w/ the GRP big band which also included John Patitucci was, needeless tos ay, a masterclass on record!

Noteman I love Brushy One String!
These guys are okay, but waffles and Brushy are amazing.
You also described Rush.
@@hugolafhugolaf I'm not a huge Rush guy, but I can definitely agree with that statement.
@@musicdev Are you familiar with their song "Bravado?" Talk about great feel and mastery, and synergy among virtuosos!

Brian Blade as well.

Love Dave Weckl’s approach to the drums. Intelligent, professional, dynamic and lots of feel. Truly becoming one of my favorite drummers!

Buddy Rich,Sony Pawne,Mel Torme,Dave Weckl....... Alliens!!!!!!!!
I'm old enough to remember when they said Patitucci couldn't play upright and Weckl had no feel. Take that, old days!

We’ll it was true back then, and they learned.
Jealousy is all it was John was in his early 20s and was so gifted and ahead of his time and now one of the greatest there is
refreshing
Remember hearing them live in 1987 and they were so brillant. What a huge loss, that Chick passed away. May he rest in peace. ❤
Seeing Chick and John watch his solo is such a great moment. Such mutual respect, and you can almost see in their eyes the past and present of their musical journeys together.

Agreed!! They have played together for years and 2 of the greatest musicians still watch in awe of Dave

Chick is a maniac with his arrangements and re harmonizations, but Dave just makes it look so effortless.
That's artistry there. That's not just drumming. And what a cool venue.
If ever 3 musicians were destined to find each other... This is it.
I have watched this one so many times. 3 GOATs on stage. Priceless !!
Weckl is one of the kindest people I've ever met; a real sweet guy 🙂
😂
Such a superb drummer and still getting better I think. One of the great ones.
quite shocked how well he is still playing, got to agree.
That man can sure pull every sound out of a drum that it has to offer.Hes the engineer of that train.
Three of my all time favourite musicians.
The beauty is that they keep getting better it seems, they don't have to live on their past glories.
Unlike old rock and rollers....
Was lucky to see him once in jazz club, meet him backstage after the show, i was so stunned all could say was fantastic, and he signed me a stick. wow :)
Dam.. do u still have the signed stick?
Ah yes Dave Weckl the best musical and poetic drummer of all time, his expression and fluidity on the drums are unparalleled
"...fluidity on the drums..." That's it.
This never gets old.
That was so smooth even the word smooth said “that was smooth”.
Beautiful composition & arrangement, beautiful drums, beautiful setting.
Hard to recon with that Chick Corea is no longer with us yet able to perform at the high level he did to his end. And Dave Weckl and John… such incredible artists along with Chick on their instruments.
Dave might be the best all around. He can do any style with equal mastery.
Brilliant. That’s all that needs to be said.
The communication between these three is scary good. When I play with Dave's contemporary drummer with Chick and Patitucci it just feels so good...
Superb. The Akoustic Band album is one of my faves. Thanks for the video!
If you like that record, go out and buy Chick's LP 'three quartets'. It's an absolute masterpiece of a recording.
The best and extremely humble..what a combo..that's dave
Been a fan of Weckl since the mid 80's.....this performance is truly one of the best.

There hasn't been a jazz/fusion player born who can step with Dave. He is perfect.

Out of all the contemporary greats, it sounds like Buddy's spirit landed in Dave Weckl.

6:10 to 7:40 is just absurdly good and creative. Wow!!
Que nível ..👏👏👏👏
I do really love Weckl better in a pure jazz acoustic set like here than when he is in a funk electric mood.
Greatest jazz drummer to ever live in my opinion.
Unless, you include Buddy Rich as a "jazz" drummer...then Buddy Rich gets MY vote!!!
Grief, his phrasing is fluid beyond compare.
