I'm old enough to remember when they said Patitucci couldn't play upright and Weckl had no feel. Take that, old days!

I remember early 90s the jealousy of local jazzers they just didn't rise to this level of musicianship
      It was jealousy and untrue
I lived thru that BS it was wrong and tbh offensive

Imagine mastering an instrument. Then imagine playing with two other people who are masters at their instruments. Then imagine mastering playing with those two other people that have mastered their instruments.
That's what we're watching every time Weckl, Corea, and Patitucci jam together and it's one of the most amazing things this planet offers (waffles being another one of those mystical things).

I used to hang w/ DW when he lived north of NY City and played in a sort of hip ‘smooth jazz’ band called Nite Sprite. He then started gigging then with a small personal PA system, 15” speaker placed right behind his head, mics on everything, a touch of reverb & EQ, and it sounded like a flawless studio drum sound - in a bar. He said it was to be able to hear himself. This was something totally new and different. I believe Gary Chester was encouraging him to do this, partly. Anyway, he sounded great back then at age 22 or whatever but sounds better than EVER now. Yeah Dave!

About 10 years ago , I was building part of , what was the drum showroom at Yamaha in n Hollywood . Part of my payment was a massive oak custom kit . 26" kick , 15" rack , 18" floor , 61/2 copper snare ....big kit . I came in to work on the snare drum room that day , my kit had been delivered and set up in the showroom , Weckl came in and saw it and said " whoa !" And proceeded to sit down and start tapping . I came out of the snare room and said " this is a 2 and 4 kit , not for overplayers ! " he almost fell over laughing ! He's a great guy , very humble and a monster player . That's my brush with greatness , I can go back to the shadows now......

Not just a shining star in drumming, but in human movement and art -- like Michael Jordan, Usain Bolt...Michelangelo? Certainly takes my breath away

Unless, you include Buddy Rich as a "jazz" drummer...then Buddy Rich gets MY vote!!!

Small kit, low cymbal placement, elbows at your side = speed and endurance!! Dave and Joel Rosenblatt are 2 of my favs!

@Castro's Son Good question. I've never used it and never needed it. Ist off, I'm old school. Took up drums in 1969. We would experiment with mole skin (Dr. Scholls). Duct tape ect. We were young. Drums from that era all had internal mufflers too. When I started playing out, I would always keep a roll of electrical tape and a small bag of cotton balls in my stick bag pocket. You could adjust cym.or drums with that. Casuals bring a lot of diff. Acoustical environments and I wanted to be prepared. These days I play all my kits wide open with single ply heads. Tuned properly they SING.

@Castro's Son Coated bottom heads = a little less ring. Might be smooth white on there? Notice the electrical tape/residue on his crash. Haha. Buddy Rich used it on some of his rides. Keeps them from building when played aggressively. Oldest trick in the book. If Moon Gel was paying you an endorsement fee, you had better be seen using it right? And studio work, yes muffling needed. No logos on Cymbals? Hmmm.

@Castro's Son good conversation. Good insights!. Wow another gadget everybody needs. A snare drum clamp on external muffler! Have not seen that before. Could have flipped a baseball bat muffler from a vintage ludwig snare in the same amount of time. In other words, some of the gadgets are repeating themselves. If you have a felt underneath your cym., the top felt doesn't affect the sound any. Its already dead there. IMO. I use coated or clear Amb. top, clear Amb. Bottom. I never dent my heads . That's what Mics are for. Volume. Fiberskins on my Radio Kings. Aquarium American Vintage on that snare drum. Truly inspiring to play those. Same kit as BR's last one with a 24 kick. Sold My Yamaha kit as it did not inspire me anymore. I love the old drums from yesteryear for I am old. Haha

@Castro's Son I'm 60. See I would have dug a Rogers. The Dyna snare was built for Buddy. Beautiful drums. Great chat. Hope others enjoy it. Check out Joel as I mentioned before. He was Dave's college roommate. Spiro Gyra. You tube. Para ti latina. You will dig it. Cheers from west Texas USA. Brian

I saw Joel with Spyro Gyra around 1978 at Guzman hall in downtown Miami. They were great!
